    Synthetic aperture radar sensitivity to forest changes: A simulations-based study for the Romanian forests

    Natural and anthropogenic disturbances pose a significant threat to forest condition. Continuous, reliable and accurate forest monitoring systems are needed to provide earlywarning of potential declines in forest condition. To address that need, state-of-the-art simulationsmodelswere used to evaluate the utility of C-, L- and P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors within an integrated Earth-Observation monitoring system for beech, oak and coniferous forests in Romania. The electromagnetic simulations showed differentiated sensitivity to vegetation water content, leaf area index, and forest disturbance depending on SAR wavelength and forest structure. C-band data was largely influenced by foliage volume and therefore may be useful for monitoring defoliation. Changes in water content modulated the C-band signal by b1 dBwhichmay be insufficient for a meaningful retrieval of drought effects on forest. Cband sensitivity to significant clear-cuts was rather low (1.5 dB). More subtle effects such as selective logging or thinning may not be easily detected using C- or L-band data with the longer P-band needed for retrieving small intensity forest disturbances. Overall, the simulations emphasize that additional effort is needed to overcome current limitations arising from the use of a single frequency, acquisition time and geometry by tapping the advantages of dense time series, and by combining acquisitions from active and passive sensors. The simulation results may be applicable to forests outside of Romania since the forests types used in the study have similar morphological characteristics to forests elsewhere in Europe.Romanian National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation Authorit

    CLINICAL AND THERAPEUTICAL ASPECTS OF LABIO-MAXILLO-PALATINE CLEFT: DATA FROM LITERATURE

    The current literature shows that the cleft lip and/or palate are the most frequent congenital anomalies of all the congenital face anomalies. They can occur as part of a syndrome or they can be nonsyndromic. In the present study we compared particular growth aspects in children with cleft lip and/or palate, pathogenesis, dental anomalies accompanying various clinical forms, protocols and treatments that are most frequently used. Many patients with operated cleft lip/palate have a limited maxillary growth whereas the patients with operated cleft lip/palate have nearly normal facial growth. Most researchers believe that maxillary retrusion is secondary to the labial and/or palatal repair. As reported in other studies children with unoperated palate clefts present a small size of the anterior-posterior maxilla as well as retrusive maxilla. This type of congenital malformation is a special situation because of the treatment it requires which is an interdisciplinary approach that includes:maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, orthodontic treatment, ENT’s, speech therapy and paediatrics. There isn’t currently a fixed treatment scheme, schools like the German or American one use different therapeutic protocols. Also, specialized centers for treating lip and palate clefts have been established in other countries, thereby ensuring from the very beginning an adequate control and supervision of treatment that will continue all along

    Corrosion Behavior of Coated Low Carbon Steel in a Simulated PEMFC Environment

    Here, potential metallic bipolar plate (BP) materials were manufactured by laser coating NiCr-based alloys with different Ti additions on low carbon steel substrates. The titanium content within the coating varied between 1.5 and 12.5 wt%. Our present study focussed on electrochemically testing the laser cladded samples in a milder solution. The electrolyte used for all of the electrochemical tests consisted of a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution (acidulated with H2SO4 at pH = 5) with the addition of 0.1 ppm F−. The corrosion resistance properties of the laser-cladded samples was evaluated using an electrochemical protocol, which consisted of the open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, and potentiodynamic polarization, followed by potentiostatic polarization under simulated proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anodic and cathodic environments for 6 h each. After the samples were subjected to potentiostatic polarization, the EIS measurements and potentiodynamic polarization were repeated. The microstructure and chemical composition of the laser cladded samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis

    Reducing iInterruptions during drug medication preparation and administration: an Improvement Project

    PURPOSE: According to literature, interruptions during drug administration lead to a significant proportion of medication errors. Evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to reduce interruption is still limited. The purpose of this paper is to explore main reasons for interruptions during drug administration rounds in a geriatric ward of an Italian secondary hospital and test the effectiveness of a combined intervention. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This is a pre and post-intervention observational study based on direct observation. All nurse staff (24) participated to the study that lead to observe a total of 44 drug dispensing rounds with 945 drugs administered to 491 patients in T0 and 994 drugs to 506 patients in T1. FINDINGS: A significant reduction of raw number of interruptions (mean per round from 17.31 in T0 to 9.09 in T1, p<0.01), interruptions/patient rate (from 0.78 in T0 to 0.40 in T1, p<0.01) and interruptions/drugs rate (from 0.44 in T0 to 0.22 in T1, p<0.01) were observed. Needs for further improvements were elicited (e.g. a greater involvement of support staff). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Nurse staff should be adequately trained on the risks related to interruptions during drug administration since routine activity is at high risk of distractions due to its repetitive and skill-based nature. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: A strong involvement of both MB and leadership, together with the frontline staff, helped to raise staff motivation and guide a bottom-up approach, able to identify tailored interventions and serve concurrently as training instrument tool

    Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in the Diagnosis of Enamel Defects

    Developmental defects of enamel (DDEs) are deviations from the normal appearance in terms of the quantity and quality of tooth enamel. They may be genetic or acquired. The most important DDEs are hypomineralization and hypoplasia. The aim of this study was to produce “in vivo” DDE in Wistar rats by administering amoxicillin to pregnant females and to highlight these lesions after sacrifice of the pups by macroscopic and microscopic examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Amoxicillin (100 mg/kg) was administered to two pregnant Wistar female rats for the production of DDEs. When the pups were 2 months old, they were sacrificed, and their jaws were harvested together with their teeth. The jaws were examined macroscopically, microscopically, and by OCT. Following the macroscopic and microscopic examination, it was established that four pups had a total of 42 DDE lesions. At the OCT examination, the hypomineralization was characterized by an intense, inhomogeneous OCT signal, and the hypoplasia was characterized by the absence of the signal. Administration of amoxicillin to pregnant females of Wistar rats resulted in DDEs in their offspring. The OCT examination confirmed the presence of these lesions in the teeth of rat pups

    Adverse events detection through global trigger tool methodology: results from a 5-year study in an italian hospital and opportunities to improve interrater reliability

    Objective: Global Trigger Tool (GTT) has been proposed as a low-cost method to detect adverse events (AEs). The validity of the methodology has been questioned because of moderate interrater agreement. Continuous training has been suggested as a means to improve consistency over time. We present the main findings of the implementation of the Italian version of the GTT and evaluate efforts to improve the interrater reliability over time. Methods: The Italian version of the GTT was developed and implemented at the San Bonifacio Hospital, a 270-bed secondary care acute hospital in Verona, Italy. Ten clinical records randomly selected every 2 weeks were reviewed from 2009 to 2014. Two-stage interrater reliability assessment between team members was conducted on 2 subsamples of 50 clinical records before and after the implementation of specific review rules and staff training. Results: Among 1320 medical records reviewed, a total of 366 AEs were found with at least 1 AE on 20.2% of all discharges, 27.7 AEs/100 admissions, and 30.6 AEs/1000 patient-days. Adverse events with harm score E and F were respectively 58.2% (n = 213) and 38.8% (n = 142). First round interrater reliability was comparable with other international studies. The interrater agreement improved significantly after intervention ([kappa] interrater I = 0.52, [kappa] interrater II = 0.80, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Despite the improvements in the interrater consistency, overall results did not show any significant trend in AEs over time. Future studies may be directed to apply and adapt the GTT methodology to more specific settings to explore how to improve its sensitivity
