    Reduction of gray mold development in table grapes by preharvest sprays with ethanol and calcium chloride.

    Preharvest applications of a 16% ethanol (EtOH) solution, containing 1 % of calcium chloride (CaCl2), reduced gray mold development in ‘Chasselas’ table grapes picked at a late harvest date, the losses due to rotten clusters dropped from 15% in controls to 5% in grapes treated with EtOH+CaCl2. Then over a 6-week cold storage, the losses due to gray mold rots were reduced by 50% when storing EtOH+CaCl2 treated clusters, compared to untreated controls. Preliminary experiments had shown that a 2% EtOH solution was already inducing significant drop of gray mold growth. A range of concentrations up to 50% ethanol had been tested in preliminary trials without observing damages to the vines and clusters. The treatments did not induce significant changes to the fruit quality assessed by sensory analyses on healthy berries

We explore the applicability of stable isotope dendroclimatology as a tool for chronology and paleo-hydrology reconstruction on deciduous trees from monsoonal northern Thailand. Analysis of 11 trees coming from 4 different regions of northern Thailand yielded 7 records with varying degrees of δ18O and δ13C seasonality. We develop age models for trees lacking visible rings based on the seasonality of the δ18O and find agreement to within ≤ 3 years with radiocarbon age estimates. We use the isotopic age models to reconstruct estimates of growth rates and find a significant positive correlation between growth and amplitude of the oxygen and carbon seasonal isotopic signals. A comparison of a reconstructed dendro-isotopic index from Pangmapa with regional rainfall records indicates significant correlations consistent with the locally derived patterns but with decreased representation of the variance. Individual isotopic chronologies stemming from different tree species share common trends, which are also consistent with patterns of rainfall variability. We see an increase in the amplitude of the seasonal δ18O cycle along with an increase in δ18Omax over the past few decades suggesting a tracking of the recent drying trend of Thailand's monsoon.This research was supported by NSERC and the Teresa Heinz Scholarship for Environmental Research to PFP and Award #0402425 from the Paleoclimate Program of the Atmospheric Sciences Division of NSF to DPS

    Ultrafast light-induced response of photoactive yellow protein chromophore analogues

    The fluorescence decays of several analogues of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) chromophore in aqueous solution have been measured by femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion and the corresponding time-resolved fluorescence spectra have been reconstructed. The native chromophore of PYP is a thioester derivative of p-coumaric acid in its trans deprotonated form. Fluorescence kinetics are reported for a thioester phenyl analogue and for two analogues where the thioester group has been changed to amide and carboxylate groups. The kinetics are compared to those we previously reported for the analogues bearing ketone and ester groups. The fluorescence decays of the full series are found to lie in the 1–10 ps range depending on the electron-acceptor character of the substituent, in good agreement with the excited-state relaxation kinetics extracted from transient absorption measurements. Steady-state photolysis is also examined and found to depend strongly on the nature of the substituent. While it has been shown that the ultrafast light-induced response of the chromophore in PYP is controlled by the properties of the protein nanospace, the present results demonstrate that, in solution, the relaxation dynamics and pathway of the chromophore is controlled by its electron donor–acceptor structure: structures of stronger electron donor–acceptor character lead to faster decays and less photoisomerisation

    Complementary feeding and the early origins of obesity risk:A study protocol

    Introduction The rise in the prevalence of childhood obesity worldwide calls for an intervention earlier in the life cycle. Studies show that nutrition during early infancy may contribute to later obesity. Hence, this study is designed to determine if the variation in complementary feeding practices poses a risk for the development of obesity later in life. A mixed methods approach will be used in conducting this study.Methods and analysis The target participants are infants born from January to June 2015 in the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO) platform. The SEACO is a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) that is established in the District of Segamat in the state of Johor, Malaysia. For the quantitative strand, the sociodemographic data, feeding practices, anthropometry measurement and total nutrient intake will be assessed. The assessment will occur around the time complementary feeding is expected to start (7 Months) and again at 12 months. A 24-hour diet recall and a 2-day food diary will be used to assess the food intake. For the qualitative strand, selected mothers will be interviewed to explore their infant feeding practices and factors that influence their practices and food choices in detail.Ethics and dissemination Ethical clearance for this study was sought through the Monash University Human Research and Ethics Committee (application number CF14/3850-2014002010). Subsequently, the findings of this study will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, national and international conferences

    Frequency cavity pulling induced by a single semiconductor quantum dot

    We investigate the emission properties of a single semiconductor quantum dot deterministically coupled to a confined optical mode in the weak coupling regime. A strong pulling, broadening and narrowing of the cavity mode emission is evidenced when changing the spectral detuning between the emitter and the cavity. These features are theoretically accounted for by considering the phonon assisted emission of the quantum dot transition. These observations highlight a new situation for cavity quantum electrodynamics involving spectrally broad emitters

    Geographic distribution of Tetracapsuloidesbryosalmonae infected fish in Swiss rivers: an update

    Abstract.: Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) has been recognized as a potential threat to brown trout (Salmotrutta) populations in Switzerland. A study performed in 2000/2001 on 139 sampling sites from 127 rivers in Switzerland revealed a wide distribution of fish infected by Tetracapsuloidesbryosalmonae, the causative agent of PKD. The present study aimed to complement this dataset by studying a further 115 sample sites from 91 rivers and 4 fish farms. Mainly brown trout were investigated for the presence of T. bryosalmonae by a combination of macroscopical, histological and immunohistochemical examination. In approximately 56% of the examined sampling sites, T. bryosalmonae-infected fish were found. The prevalence of infected fish at individual sites ranged from 0% to 100%. Infection intensity, judged on the basis of histological and immunohistochemical evaluation for the degree of parasite infection, varied greatly between and within sites. PKD-positive sites were found in all areas of Switzerland. The wide distribution of the disease in Swiss rivers indicates that PKD may be a causative factor for the catch decline of brown trout, which was suggested over recent decades in Switzerlan
