Fatigue delamination behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy laminates reinforced by Z-Fiber® pinnin
-Pin reinforced carbon-fibre epoxy laminates were tested under Mode I and Mode
II conditions, both quasi-statically and in fatigue. Test procedures were
adapted from existing standard or pre-standard tests. Samples containing 2% and
4% areal densities of carbon-fibre Z-pins (0.28mm diameter) were compared with
unpinned laminates. Quasi-static tests under displacement control yielded a
dramatic increase of the apparent delamination resistance. Specimens with 2% pin
density failed in Mode I at loads 170N, equivalent to an apparent GIC of 2kJ/m2.
Fatigue testing under load control showed that the presence of the through-
thickness reinforcement slowed down fatigue delamination propagation
Bose-Einstein Condensation and Spin Mixtures of Optically Trapped Metastable Helium
We report the realization of a BEC of metastable helium-4 atoms (4He*) in an
all optical potential. Up to 10^5 spin polarized 4He* atoms are condensed in an
optical dipole trap formed from a single, focused, vertically propagating far
off-resonance laser beam. The vertical trap geometry is chosen to best match
the resolution characteristics of a delay-line anode micro-channel plate
detector capable of registering single He* atoms. We also confirm the
instability of certain spin state combinations of 4He* to two-body inelastic
processes, which necessarily affects the scope of future experiments using
optically trapped spin mixtures. In order to better quantify this constraint,
we measure spin state resolved two-body inelastic loss rate coefficients in the
optical trap
The Bayesian Decision Tree Technique with a Sweeping Strategy
The uncertainty of classification outcomes is of crucial importance for many
safety critical applications including, for example, medical diagnostics. In
such applications the uncertainty of classification can be reliably estimated
within a Bayesian model averaging technique that allows the use of prior
information. Decision Tree (DT) classification models used within such a
technique gives experts additional information by making this classification
scheme observable. The use of the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methodology
of stochastic sampling makes the Bayesian DT technique feasible to perform.
However, in practice, the MCMC technique may become stuck in a particular DT
which is far away from a region with a maximal posterior. Sampling such DTs
causes bias in the posterior estimates, and as a result the evaluation of
classification uncertainty may be incorrect. In a particular case, the negative
effect of such sampling may be reduced by giving additional prior information
on the shape of DTs. In this paper we describe a new approach based on sweeping
the DTs without additional priors on the favorite shape of DTs. The
performances of Bayesian DT techniques with the standard and sweeping
strategies are compared on a synthetic data as well as on real datasets.
Quantitatively evaluating the uncertainty in terms of entropy of class
posterior probabilities, we found that the sweeping strategy is superior to the
standard strategy
Ultraviolet detection from energetically deposited titania films
Thin films of unintentionally doped n-type titania have been energetically deposited from a filtered cathodic vacuum arc. All films were dense, smooth, and transparent with crystallinity depending on the deposition/annealing temperature. At a growth temperature of 600 C, the preferred phase could be changed from rutile to anatase by increasing the oxygen process pressure thereby reducing dynamic annealing. Pt/TiOx/Pt ultraviolet detectors exhibiting rectifying current-voltage characteristics and ultraviolet-visible rejection ratios exceeding 104 :1 were formed on selected films
A comparison of line-sources of buoyancy placed near and far from a wall
Experiments are presented on turbulent buoyant free - line and wall plumes, whereby the buoyancy source is emitted from a horizontal line source, in one case free of the presence of a wall and in the other placed immediately adjacent to a wall. The dynamics of turbulent entrainment, whereby ambie nt fluid is mixed in to the plume, are explored. The velocity field and scalar edge of the plumes are measur ed. From this the time - averaged plume - width and volume flux are compared. The spreading rate, and therefo re the entrainment, of the wall plume is fo und to be half that of the free - line plume, indicating that the wall has a signif icant effect on the entrainment process. Further, the volume flux of the wall plume is found to be half that of the free - line plume, indicating that larger maximum scalar conc entrations are present in the wall plume. The effect that the reduced entrainment rate has on a typical heated room, via a line source of buoyancy, is demonstrated by comparing a numerical model of the develo ping temperature stratification within a sealed enclosure in the case of the line source near a wall and away from a wall , where in particular it is found that higher maximum temperatures are present for the case of the line source near a wall
Violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality with matter waves
The Cauchy-Schwarz (CS) inequality -- one of the most widely used and
important inequalities in mathematics -- can be formulated as an upper bound to
the strength of correlations between classically fluctuating quantities.
Quantum mechanical correlations can, however, exceed classical bounds. Here we
realize four-wave mixing of atomic matter waves using colliding Bose-Einstein
condensates, and demonstrate the violation of a multimode CS inequality for
atom number correlations in opposite zones of the collision halo. The
correlated atoms have large spatial separations and therefore open new
opportunities for extending fundamental quantum-nonlocality tests to ensembles
of massive particles.Comment: Final published version (with minor changes). 5 pages, 3 figures,

Semantic Transformation of Web Services
Web services have become the predominant paradigm for the development of distributed software systems. Web services provide the means to modularize software in a way that functionality can be described, discovered and deployed in a platform independent manner over a network (e.g., intranets, extranets and the Internet). The representation of web services by current industrial practice is predominantly syntactic in nature lacking the fundamental semantic underpinnings required to fulfill the goals of the emerging Semantic Web. This paper proposes a framework aimed at (1) modeling the semantics of syntactically defined web services through a process of interpretation, (2) scop-ing the derived concepts within domain ontologies, and (3) harmonizing the semantic web services with the domain ontologies. The framework was vali-dated through its application to web services developed for a large financial system. The worked example presented in this paper is extracted from the se-mantic modeling of these financial web services
Microstructural investigation supporting an abrupt stress induced transformation in amorphous carbon films
The intrinsic stress of carbon thin films deposited by filtered cathodic arc was investigated as a function of ion energy and Ar background gas pressure. The microstructure of the films was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The stress at given substrate bias was reduced by the presence of an Ar background gas and by the presence of a Cu underlayer deposited onto the substrate prior to deposition. Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiles showed no evidence of Ar incorporation into the films. A sharp transition from a sp2 to sp3 rich phase was found to occur at a stress of 6.5±1.5 GPa, independent of the deposition conditions. The structural transition at this value of stress is consistent with available data taken from the literature and also with the expected value of biaxial stress at the phase boundary between graphite and diamond at room temperature. The microstructure of films with stress in the transition region near 6.5 GPa was consistent with a mixture of sp2 and sp3 rich structures
