    When William Tecumseh Sherman’s army marched through Georgia in the last full year of the American Civil War, it didn’t march alone. As many, if not more, than 20,000 freed refugees from slavery marched along at the army’s rear. This dissertation tells their story. It argues that Sherman’s fateful March to the Sea represented not just an important military campaign, but quite possibly the largest emancipation event in American history. It also follows the refugee experience on to the shores of Georgia and South Carolina, showing how the army’s arrival in Savannah and this emerging refugee crisis shaped some of the major questions of Reconstruction

    When General William T. Sherman\u27s army marched through Georgia during the American Civil War, it did not travel alone. As many as 17,000 refugee slaves followed his army to the coast; as many, if not more, fled to the army but decided to stay on their plantations rather than march on. This study seeks to understand Sherman\u27s march from their point of view. It argues that through their refugee experiences, Georgia\u27s refugee slaves transformed the march into one for their own freedom and citizenship. Such a transformation would not be easy. Not only did the refugees have to brave the physical challenges of life on the march, they had to also exist within a war waged by white men. The refugees, therefore, were forced to legitimate their freedom in spite of the very people, institutions, and circumstances that made their emancipation possible. Resolving this conundrum represented the ongoing struggle of the march, and it would remain a struggle even after the refugees arrived Savannah. Somewhere Toward Freedom documents this tension from the moment the first refugees reached Sherman\u27s army to their eventual resettlement on the Georgia coast

    An Online Adapted Yoga Program for Adults with Parkinson\u27s Disease

    Background: Parkinson’s (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting nearly 10 million people and ~1 million Americans (Parkinson’s Foundation, 2022). PD affects motor and nonmotor functions, increasing disability over time (Dutta, 2020). Research shows that yoga improves motor function, balance, and functional mobility, reduces anxiety and depression, and increases QoL for patients with PD (Ban et al., 2021, Green et al., 2019). Problem/Purpose: Individuals with PD experience decreased function in many areas of occupational performance and lack access to alternative options for yoga, such as a resource for an online adapted yoga program. The purpose of this project was to develop an online adapted yoga program resource for people with PD and increase accessibility. The project hypothesis was that developing this online resource would assist in incorporating yoga into their daily routine and sustain their practice. In addition, the goal of this project was to promote occupational engagement of those with neuromuscular impairments like PD. Methods: The project consisted of five phases: the pre-development phase, planning phase, development phase, recording phase, and test/launch phase. Each phase expanded on the previous one or concurrently on each other and served as a guide throughout the creation of the online resource. Results: An online resource of an adapted yoga program was developed to assist individuals in incorporating yoga into their daily routine and sustain their practice.     A Pilot Study with a Novel Setup for Collaborative Play of the Humanoid Robot KASPAR with children with autism

    This article is distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits any use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author(s) and the source are credited.This article describes a pilot study in which a novel experimental setup, involving an autonomous humanoid robot, KASPAR, participating in a collaborative, dyadic video game, was implemented and tested with children with autism, all of whom had impairments in playing socially and communicating with others. The children alternated between playing the collaborative video game with a neurotypical adult and playing the same game with the humanoid robot, being exposed to each condition twice. The equipment and experimental setup were designed to observe whether the children would engage in more collaborative behaviours while playing the video game and interacting with the adult than performing the same activities with the humanoid robot. The article describes the development of the experimental setup and its first evaluation in a small-scale exploratory pilot study. The purpose of the study was to gain experience with the operational limits of the robot as well as the dyadic video game, to determine what changes should be made to the systems, and to gain experience with analyzing the data from this study in order to conduct a more extensive evaluation in the future. Based on our observations of the childrens’ experiences in playing the cooperative game, we determined that while the children enjoyed both playing the game and interacting with the robot, the game should be made simpler to play as well as more explicitly collaborative in its mechanics. Also, the robot should be more explicit in its speech as well as more structured in its interactions. Results show that the children found the activity to be more entertaining, appeared more engaged in playing, and displayed better collaborative behaviours with their partners (For the purposes of this article, ‘partner’ refers to the human/robotic agent which interacts with the children with autism. We are not using the term’s other meanings that refer to specific relationships or emotional involvement between two individuals.) in the second sessions of playing with human adults than during their first sessions. One way of explaining these findings is that the children’s intermediary play session with the humanoid robot impacted their subsequent play session with the human adult. However, another longer and more thorough study would have to be conducted in order to better re-interpret these findings. Furthermore, although the children with autism were more interested in and entertained by the robotic partner, the children showed more examples of collaborative play and cooperation while playing with the human adult.Peer reviewe

    A systems engineering approach to address human capital management issues in the shipbuilding industry

    Recent human capital trends within the Department of Defense (DoD) and its contractors have shown a dramatic decrease in science and engineering skill levels due to retirement and attrition. This has caused major concern for leaders, especially regarding engineering talent necessary for shipbuilding. This study investigated current DoD Human Capital Management (HCM) strategies for attracting, developing, retaining and managing competencies and intellectual resources for science and engineering talent within the shipbuilding industry. The investigation consisted of a survey of current DoD and industry HCM frameworks, an analysis of the needs of key stakeholders, and an examination of the gaps in the HCM strategies employed by these stakeholders. The result of the analysis was the development, via a functional analysis, of a notional HCM architecture for the shipbuilding industry that addresses stakeholder needs and closes the perceived gaps in current strategies. The notional HCM architecture was developed to provide a first iteration of a HCM architecture tailorable to a particular stakeholder's HCM needs. This study also developed a notional overall measure of effectiveness (OMOE) model to suggest the means by which stakeholders can judge the effectiveness of their tailored version of the HCM architecture. This first-iterate OMOE was derived using weights and metrics based on the author's insights gained from the research performed during this study, and suggests that further refinement of the HCM architecture is required.http://archive.org/details/asystemsengineer109453978Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding author (civilian).Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
