    Determination of Priorities for Footway Reconstruction

    This report describes a study conducted for Sheffield City Council to obtain pedestriansr reactions to the quality and acceptability of footways of different construction in different conditions, and to assess pedestriansr preferences for different types of footway construction. The results are intended to aid the Council in identifying priorities for the maintenance of existing footways, and preferred surfaces for new or reconstructed footways. The study involved four stages; a new survey to identify footway characteristics of concern to pedestrians; interviews and objective measurements at a total of 13 sites; interviews at a set of eight purpose built trial sites; and analysis and interpretation of the results

    1.1.1 The Institute for Transport Studies was invited by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory to submit a research proposal, with costs, aimed at establishing suitable "Ergonomic Standards for Pedestrian Areas for Disabled People". The project commenced on 1st July, 1986 and was split into two parts, with part one involving four months' work over the period to 31st December, 1986 and part two finishing on 30th April, 1988. 1.1.2 The -objectives of the study laid down in the design brief by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory were: a) To produce a guide to good practice for the design and maintenance of footways and pedestrianised areas; b) To provide, where possible, recommended standards for design and maintenance. The good practice guide and the recommended standards were to be primarily aimed at disabled people and the elderly, but the requirements of the able-bodied were also to be considered, as were conflicts between the needs of different groups of user.     Developing a competence framework for cognitive analytic therapy

    Objective This paper describes the development and summarizes the content of a competence framework for delivery of cognitive analytic therapy (CAT). Design The framework was developed using the evidence‐based method developed by Roth and Pilling (2008, Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, 36, 129). Methods A review of the CAT outcome literature identified where CAT interventions had evidence of efficacy. Standard texts on CAT were primary sources for details of theory and practice. This process was supported by an expert reference group (ERG). The role of the ERG was to provide professional advice on areas where the evidence base was lacking, but where CAT interventions were commonly used by therapists trained in the model. Results A framework was produced and structured in terms of core knowledge, core skills, and meta‐competences (which require therapeutic judgement rather than simple adherence to a treatment protocol). Conclusions The framework enables trainees, service users, service managers, and commissioners to better understand a) the core features of CAT and b) what competences need to be in place for CAT to be skilfully delivered in practice. Practitioner points It is possible to define the core competences of CAT. Whilst generic competences are important, there are five CAT‐specific domains of competence.     A role for glycosaminoglycans in the development of collagen fibrils

    AbstractExtensive data on the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composition and the collagen fibril diameter distribution have been collected for a diverse range of connective tissues. It is shown that tissues with the smallest diameter collagen fibrils (mass-average diameter < 60 nm) have high concentrations of hyaluronic acid and that tissues with the largest diameter collagen fibrils (mass-average diameter ∼200 nm) have high concentrations of dermatan sulphate. It is suggested that the lateral growth of fibrils beyond a diameter of about 60 nm is inhibited by the presence of an excess of hyaluronic acid but that this inhibitory effect may be removed by an increasing concentration of chondroitin sulphate and/or dermatan sulphate. It is also postulated that high concentrations of chondroitin sulphate will inhibit fibril growth beyond a mass-average diameter of ∼150 nm. Such an inhibition may in turn be removed by an increasing concentration of dermatan sulphate such that it becomes the dominant GAG present in the tissue

    Gauged Inflation

    We propose a model for cosmic inflation which is based on an effective description of strongly interacting, nonsupersymmetric matter within the framework of dynamical Abelian projection and centerization. The underlying gauge symmetry is assumed to be SU(N+1)SU(N+1) with N1N \gg 1. Appealing to a thermodynamical treatment, the ground-state structure of the model is classically determined by a potential for the inflaton field (dynamical monopole condensate) which allows for nontrivially BPS saturated and thereby stable solutions. For T<MPT<M_P this leads to decoupling of gravity from the inflaton dynamics. The ground state dynamics implies a heat capacity for the vacuum leading to inflation for temperatures comparable to the mass scale MM of the potential. The dynamics has an attractor property. In contrast to the usual slow-roll paradigm we have mHm\gg H during inflation. As a consequence, density perturbations generated from the inflaton are irrelevant for the formation of large-scale structure, and the model has to be supplemented with an inflaton independent mechanism for the generation of spatial curvature perturbations. Within a small fraction of the Hubble time inflation is terminated by a transition of the theory to its center symmetric phase. The spontaneously broken ZN+1Z_{N+1} symmetry stabilizes relic vector bosons in the epochs following inflation. These heavy relics contribute to the cold dark matter of the universe and potentially originate the UHECRs beyond the GZK bound.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, subsection added, revision of text, to app. in PR
