Unique Properties of the Fibonacci and Lucas Sequences

    Get PDF
The algebraic structure of the set of all Fibonacci-like sequences, which includes the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, is developed, utilizing an isomorphism between this set and a subset of the 2 by 2 integer matrices. Using this isomorphism, determinants of sequences, and Fibonacci-like matrices, can be defined. The following results are then obtained: (1) the Fibonacci sequence is the only such sequence with determinant equal to 1, (2) the set of all Fibonacci-like sequences forms an integral domain, (3) even powers of Lucas matrices are multiples of a Fibonacci matrix, and (4) only powers of multiples of Fibonacci matrices or Lucas matrices are multiples of Fibonacci matrices

The Practical PEV: Removing Barriers to Plug-In Electric Vehicle Charging and Ownership

    Get PDF
The paradigm of personal transportation is changing. Electric vehicles are here. The arrival of the Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, and Chevy Volt has changed the way in which we have to think about the energy that fuels our transportation needs. As PEVs find their way into garages this year and especially in the coming years, the neighborhood, city, state, and regional electric infrastructure will take on a new importance for many people as their interactions with it become significantly more complex and intimate as a result of regular electric vehicle charging

Moving tales, exploring narrative strategies for scalable locative audio drama.

This paper reports on a recent collaboration between the Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts at Middlesex University and the BBC Radio Drama Department, which was designed to investigate the narrative possibilities of locative media in a drama context. The locative drama Scratch is the first outcome of an ongoing research project, Locating Drama, whose aim is to investigate and develop narrative strategies that take full advantage of the current generation of GPS enabled portable computing devices for audio drama. In particular, we are exploring content and modes of interaction, which, while based on location awareness are not in any way site-specific allowing users to experience the drama in a location of their choice. We will refer to this approach as translocational as it allows the translation of locative media experiences to a wide variety of spaces. The translocational approach is of particular interest to broadcasters as it is more scalable than a site-specific paradigm, opening the possibility of downloadable location-aware podcasts featuring professionally authored content for a wide audience

After Leaders:A World of Leading and Leadership …  With No Leaders

    Get PDF
We have for such a long time tied ourselves up in knots with the word leader. We argue in this chapter 1 that the field of leadership would make its greatest contribution thus far by jettisoning the word leader and giving prominence to leading and leadership. The preoccupation with, on the one hand, seeking the entitative traits, style, authenticity, and charisma of leaders, and, on the other hand, endlessly problematizing the existence of such heroic mythical creatures, has consumed so much resource for such little gain. This view is not new. Drath and colleagues 2 expressed this well in their pitch for repositioning leadership toward outcomes and process. Yet despite the eloquence and authority of their reasoned argument, they could still not let go of leader. In a parallel way, there is a growing group of researchers seeking to push forward with the notion of leadership-as-practice 3 —where leader is problematic, and notions of agency are rightfully given much greater attention

Impact of the Central Government's Deficit on Public Tertiary Education Funding in Ghana

From the era of Ghana’s independence, various governments, particularly Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Administration, considered the importance of education as a tool for socio-economic engineering and national development.  Successive governments have all tried their best when it comes funding for tertiary education Ghana.  Funding is a central pillar in the growth and development of any tertiary education in Ghana. The Ghana Government funds public universities through annual budgetary allocations with a view of achieving its national goals. Over the years, demand for university education in Ghana has increased exponentially, thereby triggering growth. However, annually the government instead of incurring surplus rather incurs deficit. This trend has a negative toll on public tertiary education immensely. It is argued sometimes these public tertiary education set up are forced to operate with an element of financial distress.  Moreover, the presence of financial trouble in public universities has led to limited growth. Hence the paper sought to assess the Impact of the Central Government's Deficit on Public Tertiary Education Funding in Ghana. The paper resorted to the use of exploratory and qualitative research paradigm taking into account the use of secondary data for analysis. The outcome revealed that there exist funding challenges leading to yearly deficit burdening the government which also affect the growth of tertiary educational institutions in Ghana. Further, the findings also revealed that the problems with internally generated funds greatly influence tertiary education, in terms of enrollment, expenditure, the various sources of finance available to students as well as infrastructural development, research and faculty development, and even the promotion of technology. Hydrological summary for the United Kingdom: November 2016

    Get PDF
The monthly summary of hydrological conditions in the United Kingdom is compiled as part of the National Hydrological Monitoring Programme (a joint CEH and BGS enterprise). The report features contemporary data for rainfall, river flow, reservoir and groundwater levels in the form of maps and graphs. A commentary is provided on the status of the nation’s water resources and any notable hydrological events during the month. The National River Flow and National Groundwater Level Archives help provide an historical context for these contemporary assessments. Financial support for the production of the Hydrological Summaries is provided by Defra, the Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Rivers Agency in Northern Ireland and the Office of Water Services
