    P78-2 (SCATHA) satellite thermal balance test, a laboratory test

    Space simulation test programs can be carried out with a high probability of being troublefree with a competent staff, a well-maintained test facility and attention to interfaces; however, full-up thermal balance tests using the solar simulator, temperature control of infrared sources, the gimbal, a large number of thermocouples, and other requirements for a high fidelity thermal balance are still a challenge. The P78-2 (Scatha) satellite was successfully tested with one interruption and a four-day abbreviated retest to verify a modification. This was accomplished in spite of the new test crew, a facility beset with several operational problems, and marginal interface control. These problems were addressed with very good results. Subsequent tests have been highly successful

    Comparison of a linear and a nonlinear washout for motion simulators utilizing objective and subjective data from CTOL transport landing approaches

    Objective and subjective data gathered in the processes of comparing a linear and a nonlinear washout for motion simulators reveal that there is no difference in the pilot performance measurements used during instrument landing system (ILS) approaches with a Boeing 737 conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) airplane between fixed base, linear washout, and nonlinear washout operations. However, the subjective opinions of the pilots reveal an important advance in motion cue presentation. The advance is not in the increased cue available over a linear filter for the same amount of motion base travel but rather in the elimination of false rotational rate cues presented by linear filters

    The comparison of a fixed-base versus a five-degree-of-freedom motion base simulation of a 737 conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) aircraft performing instrument landing system (ILS) landing approaches was used to evaluate a linear motion washout technique. The fact that the pilots felt that the addition of motion increased the pilot workload and this increase was not reflected in the objective data results, indicates that motion cues, as presented, are not a contributing factor to root-mean-square (rms) performance during the landing approach task. Subjective results from standard maneuvering about straight-and-level flight for specific motion cue evaluation revealed that the longitudinal channels (pitch and surge) possibly the yaw channel produce acceptable motions. The roll cue representation, involving both roll and sway channels, was found to be inadequate for large roll inputs, as used for example, in turn entries

These problems, called power issues, have all of the characteristics of wicked problems; however, they are differentiated from them because their roots are based in power. The Power Perspectives Framework from Bradshaw-Camball and Murray is utilized in the context of these G2G systems to provide a framework for the identification and classification of power issues and Courtney’s DSS paradigm is extended to assist in resolving them by incorporating the power perspective into the methodology

    A polymorphic reconfigurable emulator for parallel simulation

    Microprocessor and arithmetic support chip technology was applied to the design of a reconfigurable emulator for real time flight simulation. The system developed consists of master control system to perform all man machine interactions and to configure the hardware to emulate a given aircraft, and numerous slave compute modules (SCM) which comprise the parallel computational units. It is shown that all parts of the state equations can be worked on simultaneously but that the algebraic equations cannot (unless they are slowly varying). Attempts to obtain algorithms that will allow parellel updates are reported. The word length and step size to be used in the SCM's is determined and the architecture of the hardware and software is described

    Computer software for the conversion of fixed-base simulations into moving-base simulations utilizing a synergistic six-degree-of-freedom motion simulator has been developed. This software includes an actuator extension transformation, inverse actuator extension transformation, a centroid transformation, and a washout circuit. Particular emphasis is placed upon the washout circuitry as adapted to fit the synergistic motion simulator. The description of the washout circuitry and illustration by means of a sample flight emphasize that translational cue representation may be of good fidelity, but care in the selection of parameters is very necessary, particularly in regard to anomalous rotational cues

    An evaluation of the visual effect of image tilt of a refractive lens display system is presented. The system was used to present a rudimentary computer generated out the window scene to the pilot of a flight simulator during approach, flare, and touchdown. Comparisons are made of sink rate at touchdown and performances for untilted and tilted displays. Sixty four landings with each condition for a total of 128 touchdowns were made by 3 subjects. Performance measures, such as the flare and touchdown footprints, were recorded and analyzed. The visual effect of the image tilt was investigated for a terrain model board scene

    Empirical comparison of a fixed-base and a moving-base simulation of a helicopter engaged in visually conducted slalom runs

    Combined visual, motion, and aural cues for a helicopter engaged in visually conducted slalom runs at low altitude were studied. The evaluation of the visual and aural cues was subjective, whereas the motion cues were evaluated both subjectively and objectively. Subjective and objective results coincided in the area of control activity. Generally, less control activity is present under motion conditions than under fixed-base conditions, a fact attributed subjectively to the feeling of realistic limitations of a machine (helicopter) given by the addition of motion cues. The objective data also revealed that the slalom runs were conducted at significantly higher altitudes under motion conditions than under fixed-base conditions

    Financial conditions existing in agriculture are placing severe pressure on lenders as well as borrowers. Data from both good and foreclosed Federal Land Bank loans were analyzed to determine the most important characteristics leading to the failure of loans. The analysis was completed by comparing means through t-tests and the development of a discriminant model. The ratio of total debt service to total income, the debt to asset ratio, the ratio of total loan amount to appraised value, and the ratio of acres in security to acres owned were determined to be the most important discriminating variables.Agricultural Finance,
