    Efficient optimisation of structures using tabu search

    This paper presents a novel approach to the optimisation of structures using a Tabu search (TS) method. TS is a metaheuristic which is used to guide local search methods towards a globally optimal solution by using flexible memory cycles of differing time spans. Results are presented for the well established ten bar truss problem and compared to results published in the literature. In the first example a truss is optimised to minimise mass and the results compared to results obtained using an alternative TS implementation. In the second example, the problem has multiple objectives that are compounded into a single objective function value using game theory. In general the results demonstrate that the TS method is capable of solving structural optimisation problems at least as efficiently as other numerical optimisation approaches

    Multi-Objective Optimisation of Aero-Engine Compressors

    The design of a new aero-engine compressor is a complex task: design objectives are almost always conflicting, the design space is large, nonlinear and highly constrained, and the effects of some geometrical changes can be difficult to predict. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is now widely used in real-world applications and especially in the design of turbomachinery. However, the large design space and the time required for the numerical simulation of the whole turbomachine make the use of CFD in the early phases of the design process infeasible: preliminary design relies on a number of physical and empirical relations, still quite similar to those used in the early history of turbomachinery design. In this study, 87 independent parameters were used to define the geometry of a 7-stage compressor, the performance of which was evaluated using proprietary design codes for mean-line, multi-stage analysis. The effects on efficiency and surge margin of changing 44 design variables were analysed and their optimal values found by means of deterministic (gradient-based) and meta-heuristic (Tabu Search [TS]) optimisation methods. The results show clearly how the use of meta-heuristic optimisation tools can improve the preliminary design of turbomachinery, allowing a more thorough but still rapid exploration of the design space to identify the most promising regions that will then be verified and further analysed with higher fidelity tools. The results also reveal the impact of introducing various constraints into the design process, highlighting the effects of design decomposition

    Electric field effect on superconductivity at complex oxide interfaces

    We examine the enhancement of the interfacial superconductivity between LaAlO3_{3} and SrTiO3_{3} by an effective electric field. Through the breaking of inversion symmetry at the interface, we show that a term coupling the superfluid density and an electric field can augment the superconductivity transition temperature. Microscopically, we show that an electric field can also produce changes in the carrier density by relating the measured capacitance to the density of states. Through the electron-phonon induced interaction in bulk SrTiO3_{3}, we estimate the transition temperature.Comment: 7 Pages, Submitted to Physical Revie

    The identification of 93 day periodic photometric variability for YSO YLW 16A

    Aims. Periodic variability in young stellar objects (YSOs) offers indirect evidence for an active dynamical mechanism. Starspots, accretion, stellar companions, and disk veiling can contribute to the photometric variability of YSOs. Methods. As part of an ongoing study of the ρ Oph star forming region, we report the discovery of 92.6 day periodic variations for the Class I YSO YLW 16A, observed over a period of three years. A SED model was fit to available photometric data for the object. Results. We propose a triple-system with an inner binary with a period of 93 days eclipsed by a warped circum-binary disk. The nature of the secondary is unconstrained and could be stellar or sub-stellar. We confirm the discovery of a tertiary companion at a projected separation of ~40 AU that could account for the circum-binary disk warp. This light curve and model is similar to the model we proposed for WL 4 in previous work. Understanding these systems may lead to insights about the nature of stellar evolution and planetary formation, and provide valuable benchmarks for future theoretical modeling and near- and mid-infrared synoptic surveys of YSOs
