On the Insignificance of Photochemical Hydrocarbon Aerosols in the Atmospheres of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets
The close-in extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs) reside in irradiated
environments much more intense than that of the giant planets in our solar
system. The high UV irradiance strongly influences their photochemistry and the
general current view believed that this high UV flux will greatly enhance
photochemical production of hydrocarbon aerosols. In this letter, we
investigate hydrocarbon aerosol formation in the atmospheres of CEGPs. We find
that the abundances of hydrocarbons in the atmospheres of CEGPs are
significantly less than that of Jupiter except for models in which the CH
abundance is unreasonably high (as high as CO) for the hot (effective
temperatures K) atmospheres. Moreover, the hydrocarbons will be
condensed out to form aerosols only when the temperature-pressure profiles of
the species intersect with the saturation profiles--a case almost certainly not
realized in the hot CEGPs atmospheres. Hence our models show that photochemical
hydrocarbon aerosols are insignificant in the atmospheres of CEGPs. In
contrast, Jupiter and Saturn have a much higher abundance of hydrocarbon
aerosols in their atmospheres which are responsible for strong absorption
shortward of 600 nm. Thus the insignificance of photochemical hydrocarbon
aerosols in the atmospheres of CEGPs rules out one class of models with low
albedos and featureless spectra shortward of 600 nm.Comment: ApJL accepte
Bayesian analysis of Friedmannless cosmologies
Assuming only a homogeneous and isotropic universe and using both the 'Gold'
Supernova Type Ia sample of Riess et al. and the results from the Supernova
Legacy Survey, we calculate the Bayesian evidence of a range of different
parameterizations of the deceleration parameter. We consider both spatially
flat and curved models. Our results show that although there is strong evidence
in the data for an accelerating universe, there is little evidence that the

Looked after children as decision makers : family group conferences in practice
Family Group Conferences (FGCs) are a family-led approach to social care decision making. The fundamental philosophy behind FGCs is that families are the experts on their own situations and as such should lead decision-making. The model advocates that children should be at the centre of decisions about them and should be supported to have their say at their FGC. The voice of looked after children too often gets lost in decision-making processes. Children report that professionals make decisions about them, rather than with them. FGCs have the potential to meaningfully engage with looked after children. Many services already offer FGCs to looked after children, either to consider family alternatives to local authority care, to make contact arrangements or to engage children in the care planning process. This paper will examine the use of FGCs in engaging with looked after children. It applies a case study approach, focusing on the Camden FGC Service, which has been offering FGCs to looked after children for several years. It will also draw on the existing evidence base that examines the use of FGCs with looked after children. In practice, sometimes the voice of the child can become overlooked at their FGC. Children report that their opinions get ignored by the adults in their family. Hence, this paper concludes with a discussion of how to ensure that looked after children are meaningfully engaged in decision making about their lives.

Randomised study of the effects of fluoride and time on in situ remineralisation of acid-softened enamel
Objectives
This single-centre, randomised, crossover study used a short-term in situ dental erosion remineralisation model to explore the remineralisation of acid-softened enamel in the 4-h period immediately following brushing with an anti-erosion, dentin hypersensitivity test dentifrice containing 1150 ppm fluoride (as sodium fluoride [NaF]) or a placebo dentifrice with no fluoride.
Materials and methods
Fifty participants wearing a palatal appliance holding surface-softened bovine enamel specimens brushed their natural teeth with their assigned dentifrice. Specimens were removed at 5-, 10-, 15-, 30-, 60-, 120- and 240-min post brushing. Enamel remineralisation effect was evaluated at each timepoint by percent surface microhardness recovery (%SMHR) and enamel fluoride uptake (EFU). After a second in vitro erosive challenge, the percent relative erosion resistance (%RER) was calculated.
Results
Statistically significant differences in %SMHR were observed for the test dentifrice compared with the placebo dentifrice from the 60-min timepoint onwards (all p < 0.02; mean difference of 8.66 [95% CI 3.46, 13.87] at 60 min). At each specimen removal time, %RER and EFU were statistically significantly higher for the test dentifrice compared with the placebo dentifrice (p < 0.0001 for all). No treatment-related or serious adverse events were reported.
Conclusions
The NaF-containing anti-erosion, dentin hypersensitivity dentifrice improved remineralisation of acid-softened enamel starting at 60 min of intra-oral exposure. It also improved enamel erosion resistance and fluoride uptake as early as 5 min after exposure to fluoridated dentifrice slurry
Astrophysical Probes of Fundamental Physics
I review the theoretical motivation for varying fundamental couplings and
discuss how these measurements can be used to constrain a number of fundamental
physics scenarios that would otherwise be inacessible to experiment. As a case
study I will focus on the relation between varying couplings and dark energy,
and explain how varying coupling measurements can be used to probe the nature
of dark energy, with important advantages over the standard methods. Assuming
that the current observational evidence for varying and is
correct, a several-sigma detection of dynamical dark energy is feasible within
a few years, using currently operational ground-based facilities. With
forthcoming instruments like CODEX, a high-accuracy reconstruction of the

Radio-quiet and radio-loud pulsars: similar in Gamma-rays but different in X-rays
We present new Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of eight
radio-quiet Gamma-ray pulsars detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For
all eight pulsars we identify the X-ray counterpart, based on the X-ray source
localization and the best position obtained from Gamma-ray pulsar timing. For
PSR J2030+4415 we found evidence for an about 10 arcsec-long pulsar wind
nebula. Our new results consolidate the work from Marelli et al. 2011 and
confirm that, on average, the Gamma-ray--to--X-ray flux ratios (Fgamma/Fx) of
radio-quiet pulsars are higher than for the radio-loud ones. Furthermore, while
the Fgamma/Fx distribution features a single peak for the radio-quiet pulsars,
the distribution is more dispersed for the radio-loud ones, possibly showing
two peaks. We discuss possible implications of these different distributions
