In situ apparatus for the study of clathrate hydrates relevant to solar system bodies using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy
Clathrate hydrates are believed to play a significant role in various solar
system environments, e.g. comets, and the surfaces and interiors of icy
satellites, however the structural factors governing their formation and
dissociation are poorly understood. We demonstrate the use of a high pressure
gas cell, combined with variable temperature cooling and time-resolved data
collection, to the in situ study of clathrate hydrates under conditions
relevant to solar system environments. Clathrates formed and processed within
the cell are monitored in situ using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and
Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction allows the formation of clathrate
hydrates to be observed as CO2 gas is applied to ice formed within the cell.
Complete conversion is obtained by annealing at temperatures just below the ice
melting point. A subsequent rise in the quantity of clathrate is observed as
the cell is thermally cycled. Four regions between 100-5000cm-1 are present in
the Raman spectra that carry features characteristic of both ice and clathrate
formation. This novel experimental arrangement is well suited to studying
clathrate hydrates over a range of temperature (80-500K) and pressure
(1-100bar) conditions and can be used with a variety of different gases and
starting aqueous compositions. We propose the increase in clathrate formation
observed during thermal cycling may be due to the formation of a quasi
liquid-like phase that forms at temperatures below the ice melting point, but
which allows easier formation of new clathrate cages, or the retention and
delocalisation of previously formed clathrate structures, possibly as amorphous
clathrate. The structural similarities between hexagonal ice, the quasi
liquid-like phase, and crystalline CO2 hydrate mean that differences in the
Raman spectrum are subtle; however, all features out to 5000cm-1 are diagnostic

Enriching the Historiography of Religious Education: Insights from Oral Life History
This article seeks to exemplify the extent to which oral life history research can enrich existing historiographies of English Religious Education (RE). Findings are reported from interviews undertaken with a sample of key informants involved in designing and/or implementing significant curriculum changes in RE in the 1960s and 1970s. The interviews provided insights into personal narratives and biographies that have been marginal to, or excluded from, the historical record. Thematic analysis of the oral life histories opened a window into the world of RE, specifically in relation to professional identity and practice, curriculum development, and professional organizations, thereby exposing the operational dynamics of RE at an (inter-)personal and organizational level. The findings are framed by a series of methodological reflections. Overall, oral life histories are shown to be capable of revealing that which was previously hidden and which can be confirmed and contrasted with knowledge gleaned from primary documentary sources
Curvilinear ridges and related features in southwest Cydonia Mensae, Mars
Examined is a region on Mars in southwest Cydonia Mensae (32 deg lat., 17 deg long.) just northwest of the lowland/upland boundary escarpment. The dominant morphological features in this region are the clusters of large massifs and plateau outliers (PI), knobby material (K), and smooth lowland plains (Ps). Surrounding the clusters and linking many isolated knobs is a system of curvilinear ridges and arcuate terrain boundaries which tend to separate the massifs and knobs from the smooth plains. Curvilinear ridges are arcuate to nearly linear and smoother in plan than wrinkle ridges and show no apparent correlation with regional structural grain. They are typically 5 to 10 km long but can range from as little as 2 or 3 km to greater than 50 km long. The widths vary from about 100 m to as much as 2 km. Curvilinear ridges are most numerous within 100 km of the lowland/upland boundary escarpment and are associated with massifs and knobby terrain. Geomorphic evidence for ancient seas in west Deuteronilus Mensae, Mars-2: From very high resolution Viking Orbiter images
Very high resolution Viking Orbiter images of the Martian surface, though rare, make it possible to examine specific areas at image scales approaching those of high altitude terrestrial aerial photographs. Twenty three clear images lie within west Deuteronilus Mensae. The northernmost images which constitute an almost unbroken mosaic of the west wall of a long fingerlike canyon are examined. Morphological details on the plateau surface within zone B, not detectable at low resolution, make it possible to divide the zone into two distinct subzones separated by an east-west escarpment. Geomorphic evidence for ancient seas on Mars
Geomorphic evidence is presented for ancient seas on Mars. Several features, similar to terrestrial lacustrine and coastal features, were identified along the northern plains periphery from Viking images. The nature of these features argues for formation in a predominantly liquid, shallow body of standing water. Such a shallow sea would require either relatively rapid development of shoreline morphologies or a warmer than present climate at the time of outflow channel formation
Geomorphic evidence for ancient seas in west Deuteronilus Mensae, Mars-1: Regional geomorphology
The fretted terrain in west Deuteronilus Mensae consists of extensive cratered upland penninsulas or isolated plateaus cut by long, finger-like canyons typically 10 to 20 km wide and upwards of 300 km long. The longest of these canyons trend roughly north-south to north-northeast, which may reflect some local structural and/or topographic control. At least three geomorphic zones roughly parallel to the lowland/upland boundary, suggestive of increasing modification northward, can be recognized on the fretted region of the region. The southern-most zone (zone A) consists of sharply defined fretted terrain. The middle zone (zone B) consists of well defined fretted terrain in which the plateau surfaces appear smoother, with a somewhat darker and much less varied albedo surface than those of zone A. The northern-most zone (zone C) consists of rounded or softened fretted terrain. The zones were interpreted as surface exposures of successively lower stratigraphic units

The Professionalisation of Non-Denominational Religious Education in England: Politics, Organisation and Knowledge
In response to contemporary concerns, and using neglected primary sources, this article explores the professionalisation of teachers of Religious Education (RI/RE) in non-denominational, state-maintained schools in England. It does so from the launch of Religion in Education (1934) and the Institute for Christian Education at Home and Abroad (1935) to the founding of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales (1973) and the British Journal of Religious Education (1978). Professionalisation is defined as a collective historical process in terms of three inter-related concepts: (1) professional self-organisation and professional politics, (2) professional knowledge, and (3) initial and continuing professional development. The article sketches the history of non-denominational religious education prior to the focus period, to contextualise the emergence of the professionalising processes under scrutiny. Professional self-organisation and professional politics are explored by reconstructing the origins and history of the Institute of Christian Education at Home and Abroad, which became the principal body offering professional development provision for RI/RE teachers for some fifty years. Professional knowledge is discussed in relation to the content of Religion in Education which was oriented around Christian Idealism and interdenominational networking. Changes in journal name in the 1960s and 1970s reflected uncertainties about the orientation of the subject and shifts in understanding over the nature and character of professional knowledge. The article also explores a particular case of resistance, in the late 1960s, to the prevailing consensus surrounding the nature and purpose of RI/RE, and the representativeness and authority of the pre-eminent professional body of the time. In conclusion, the article examines some implications which may be drawn from this history for the prospects and problems of the professionalisation of RE today
Control via electron count of the competition between magnetism and superconductivity in cobalt and nickel doped NaFeAs
Using a combination of neutron, muon and synchrotron techniques we show how
the magnetic state in NaFeAs can be tuned into superconductivity by replacing
Fe by either Co or Ni. Electron count is the dominant factor, since Ni-doping
has double the effect of Co-doping for the same doping level. We follow the
structural, magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of doping to
show how the superconducting state evolves, concluding that the addition of 0.1
electrons per Fe atom is sufficient to traverse the superconducting domain, and
that magnetic order coexists with superconductivity at doping levels less than
0.025 electrons per Fe atom.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
