Phenomena associated with the acceleration of polarized protons in circular accelerators

A series of machine studies has been done with the zero Gradient Synchrotron (ZGS) at Argonne National Laboratory in order to better understand the phenomena associated with the acceleration of polarized protons and to determine the feasibility of acceleration to energies higher than the 12 GeV/c available at the ZGS. We also investigated the question of how long polarized protons can remain in storage rings without losing excessive polarization. The three topics investigated were: 1. The adiabatic crossing of an intrinsic depolarizing resonance. 2. The depolarization due to imperfection resonances. 3. The survival time of polarization on a long flattop. This paper is a preliminary report of these three investigations.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87334/2/396_1.pd

Happiness matters : exploring the linkages between personality, personal happiness, and work-related psychological health among priests and sisters in Italy

    Get PDF
This study responds to the challenge posed by Rossetti’s work to explore the antecedents and consequences of individual differences in happiness among priests and religious sisters. The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire was completed together with measures of personality and work-related psychological health by 95 priests and 61 religious sisters. Overall the data demonstrated high levels of personal happiness among priests and religious sisters, but also significant signs of vulnerability. Personality provided significant prediction of individual differences in both personal happiness and work-related psychological health. However, personal happiness provided additional protection against work-related emotional exhaustion and additional enhancement of work-related satisfaction. These findings suggest that acknowledging and affirming personal happiness may enhance the work-related psychological health of Catholic priests and religious sisters

Metaschoepite Dissolution in Sediment Column Systems-Implications for Uranium Speciation and Transport

Metaschoepite is commonly found in U-contaminated environments and metaschoepite-bearing wastes may be managed via shallow or deep disposal. Understanding metaschoepite dissolution and tracking the fate of any liberated U is thus important. Here, discrete horizons of metaschoepite (UO3 center dot nH(2)O) particles were emplaced in flowing sediment/groundwater columns representative of the UK Sellafield Ltd. site. The column systems either remained oxic or became anoxic due to electron donor additions, and the columns were sacrificed after 6- and 12-months for analysis. Solution chemistry, extractions, and bulk and micro/nano-focus X-ray spectroscopies were used to track changes in U distribution and behavior. In the oxic columns, U migration was extensive, with UO22+ identified in effluents after 6-months of reaction using fluorescence spectroscopy. Unusually, in the electron-donor amended columns, during microbially mediated sulfate reduction, significant amounts of UO2-like colloids (>60% of the added U) were found in the effluents using TEM. XAS analysis of the U remaining associated with the reduced sediments confirmed the presence of trace U(VI), noncrystalline U(IV), and biogenic UO2, with UO2 becoming more dominant with time. This study highlights the potential for U(IV) colloid production from U(VI) solids under reducing conditions and the complexity of U biogeochemistry in dynamic systems.Peer reviewe

    Neutron-nucleus total cross sections at 5.7 GeV/c

The neutron total cross sections for He, Be, C, Al, Fe, Cu, Cd, W, Pb and U have been measured to an accuracy of 2% at 5.7 +/- 0.6 GeV/c. The total cross section versus atomic weight data was fit to an absorbing uniform grey sphere optical model. The best fit parameters are R = aoA1/3 where ao = 1.27 +/- 0.01 fm, and a nucleon mean free path in nuclear matter of 3.0 +/- 0.2 fm. The energy dependence of the nucleon-nucleus total cross sections is discussed in terms of the nucleon-nucleon total cross sections and a screening terms.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32800/1/0000173.pd

    Neutron-proton and neutron-deuteron total cross sections at 4.0 and 5.7 GeV/c

The np and nd total cross sections have been measured directly with a neutron beam with momenta of 4.0 +/- 0.6 and 5.7 +/- 0.6 GeV/c. The data are compared with the previous nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-deuteron results, and the deuteron screening term was also evaluated. The measured total cross section are 43.1 +/- 0.6 and 80.3 +/- 1.9 mb at 4.0 GeV/c and 42 +/- 0.6 and 77.8 +/- 1.3 mb at 5.7 GeV/c.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32799/1/0000172.pd

Simultaneous measurement of 2 and 3 spins in proton proton elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c

The elastic cross section for proton proton scattering at 6 GeV/c was measured using a 70% polarized beam and a 75% polarized target at the Argonne ZGS. In the range P[perpendicular]2 = 0.5 --> 2.0(GeV/c)2 we obtained small error measurements for the [short up arrow][short up arrow], [downwards arrow][downwards arrow] and [short up arrow][downwards arrow] initial spin states perpendicular to the scattering plane. At P[perpendicular]2 = 0.5 we also measured the recoil spin and found that the 5 different cross sections were very unequal.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/22271/1/0000710.pd
