Point-contact spectroscopy of the borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C
Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on YNi2B2C single crystals in
the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main
crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the
electron-phonon interaction (EPI) function with a dominant maximum around 12meV
and a further weak structure (kink or shallow broad maximum) at higher energy
at about 50meV. Other phonon maxima at 20, 24 and 32meV specified in the phonon
DOS of YNi2B2C by neutron measurements [PRB, V.55, 9058 (1997)] are not
resolved in the PC spectra pointing out to the main role of the low energy
phonon modes in EPI. Directional study of the SC gap results in
\Delta_[100]=1.5meV for the a- direction and \Delta_[001]=2.4meV along the
c-axis which may point to anisotropic and/or multiband behavior. Noteworthy,
the critical temperature T_c in all cases corresponds to that of bulk samples.
The value 2\Delta_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS one of 3.52, and the
temperature dependence \Delta(T) is BCS-like, while for the a-direction
\Delta(T) deviates from mean-field BCS behavior above T_c/2. The directional
variation in \Delta can be attributed to the multiband nature of the SC state
in YNi2B2C predicted 10 years ago (PRL, V.80, 1730 (1998)).Comment: 3 figs, 2 pages, presented on M2S-HTSC Conference, July 9-14, 2006,

Nonlinearity effects in the kicked oscillator
The quantum kicked oscillator is known to display a remarkable richness of
dynamical behaviour, from ballistic spreading to dynamical localization. Here
we investigate the effects of a Gross Pitaevskii nonlinearity on quantum
motion, and provide evidence that the qualitative features depend strongly on

Kondo effect of non-magnetic impurities and the co-existing charge order in the cuprate superconductors
We present a theory of Kondo effect caused by an induced magnetic moment near
non-magnetic impurities such as Zn and Li in the cuprate superconductors. Based
on the co-existence of charge order and superconductivity, a natural
description of the induced moment and the resulting Kondo effect is obtained in
the framework of bond-operator theory of microscopic t-J-V Hamiltonian. The
local density of state near impurities is computed in a self-consistent
Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory which shows a low-energy peak in the middle of
superconducting gap. Our theory also suggests that the charge order can be

Novel Synthesis and High Pressure Behavior of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3 H2O and Related Phases
We have prepared powder samples of NaxCoO2 x yH2O using a new synthesis
route. Superconductivity was observed in Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O between 4 and 5K as
indicated by the magnetic susceptibility. The bulk compressibilities of
Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3H2O, Na0.3CoO2 x 0.6H2O and Na0.3CoO2 were determined using a
diamond anvil cell and synchrotron powder diffraction. Chemical changes
occurring under pressure when using different pressure transmitting media are

Suicide rates among patients with cancers of the digestive system
Objective: Previous studies have suggested that suicide rates are elevated among cancer patients relative to the general population. In this analysis, we comprehensively evaluated characteristics associated with higher suicide rates among patients with cancers of the digestive system. Methods: Using the United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we identified all patients diagnosed with digestive system cancers during 2000 to 2014. Patients were classified as having died of suicide if their cause of death in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results was listed as “suicide and self-inflicted injury.” Suicide rates were compared to age-, sex-, and race-adjusted rates in the general population. Results: A total of 881 suicides were identified among 856 293 patients diagnosed with digestive system cancers. The suicide rate in this population was 32.8 per 100 000 person-years and was nearly twice that in the general population (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 1.91; 95% CI, 1.79-2.04). Suicide rates were significantly elevated for all cancer sites but were highest for esophageal (SMR = 5.03), pancreatic (SMR = 5.28), stomach (SMR = 2.84), and liver (SMR = 2.14) cancers. Standardized mortality ratios for suicide were highest within the first 5 years of diagnosis and increased with age at diagnosis for all sites except colon and stomach. Conclusions: Patients with cancers of the digestive system have a higher incidence of suicide than the general population. Suicide rates among esophageal and pancreatic cancer patients are more than 5 times general population rates. The involvement of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals may be a critical component of cancer care for these high-risk patient subgroups
Ontologies for Intelligent e-Theraoy: Application to Obesity
[EN] In this paper we propose a new approach for mental e-health
treatments named intelligent e-therapy (e-it) with capabilities for ambient intelligence
and ubiquitous computing. The proposed e-it system supposes an evolution
of cybertherapy and telepsychology tools used up to now. The e-it system
is based in a knowledge base that includes all the knowledge related to the disorder
and its treatment. We introduce the use of ontologies as the best option for

CMAS challenges to CMC-T/EBC systems
Gas turbine technology is undergoing a major transition with the recent implementation of SiC based ceramic composites (CMCs) in aircraft engines. While the potential improvement in temperature capability (≥1500°C) is unprecedented, there are a number of issues that limit the full exploitation of such potential. In addition to the longstanding concern for low temperature oxidative embrittlement and the limited temperature capability of current bond coats and matrices, the susceptibility of the protective SiO2 to volatilization in the combustion environment requires the use of environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) to achieve durability targets. Most EBC concepts, however, are based on silicates and are thus susceptible to degradation by molten silicate deposits generically known as CMAS originating from mineral debris ingested into engines with the intake air. This presentation will discuss the thermodynamic and mechanistic foundation of the degradation of EBCs by CMAS, recent progress in establishing the relevant phase equilibria for these systems, and the role of the CMAS composition on the extent of degradation, as well as perspective on mitigation. Why social networks are different from other types of networks
We argue that social networks differ from most other types of networks,
including technological and biological networks, in two important ways. First,
they have non-trivial clustering or network transitivity, and second, they show
positive correlations, also called assortative mixing, between the degrees of
adjacent vertices. Social networks are often divided into groups or
communities, and it has recently been suggested that this division could
account for the observed clustering. We demonstrate that group structure in
networks can also account for degree correlations. We show using a simple model
that we should expect assortative mixing in such networks whenever there is
variation in the sizes of the groups and that the predicted level of
assortative mixing compares well with that observed in real-world networks.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
