Fermi Gamma Ray Line at 130 GeV from Axion-Mediated Dark Matter
We consider a singlet Dirac fermion with Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry as dark
matter. A singlet complex scalar is introduced to mediate between dark matter
and the SM through Higgs portal interaction and electroweak PQ anomalies. We
show that a resonant annihilation of dark matter with axion mediation can
explain the monochromatic photon line of the Fermi LAT data at 130 GeV by
anomaly interactions while the annihilation cross section with Higgs portal
interaction is p-wave suppressed. We discuss the interplay between the direct
detection of the fermion dark matter and the collider search of Higgs-like
scalars. We also present a ultra-violet completion of the dark matter model
into the NMSSM with PQ symmetry.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, To be published in Phys. Rev.
Measurement of the properties of lossy materials inside a finite conducting cylinder
A computer code was developed to automatically perform swept frequency reflection and transmission measurements using a HP5510B Network Analyzer and computer. This software is used in conjunction with a modified high temperature test rig to obtain reflection measurements from a flat material sample. The software allows data processing to eliminate measurement errors and to obtain a reflection coefficient in the frequency or time domain. A description of the program is presented
Effect of Vibration on Retention Characteristics of Screen Acquisition Systems
An analytical and experimental investigation of the effect of vibration on the retention characteristics of screen acquisition systems was performed. The functioning of surface tension devices using fine-mesh screens requires that the pressure differential acting on the screen be less than its pressure retention capability. When exceeded, screen breakdown will occur and gas-free expulsion of propellant will no longer be possible. An analytical approach to predicting the effect of vibration was developed. This approach considers the transmission of the vibration to the screens of the device and the coupling of the liquid and the screen in establishing the screen response. A method of evaluating the transient response of the gas/liquid interface within the screen was also developed
Finite element solution of low bond number sloshing
The dynamics of liquid propellant in a low Bond number environment which are critical to the design of spacecraft systems with respect to orbital propellant transfer and attitude control system were investigated. Digital computer programs were developed for the determination of liquid free surface equilibrium shape, lateral slosh natural vibration mode shapes, and frequencies for a liquid in a container of arbitrary axisymmetric shape with surface tension forces the same order of magnitude as acceleration forces. A finite volume element representation of the liquid was used for the vibration analysis. The liquid free surface equilibrium shapes were computed for several tanks at various contact angles and ullage volumes. A configuration was selected for vibration analysis and lateral slosh mode shapes and natural frequencies were obtained. Results are documented
Effect of wind turbine generator model and siting on wind power changes out of large WECS arrays
Methods of reducing the WECS generation change through selection of the wind turbine model for each site, selection of an appropriate siting configuration, and wind array controls are discussed. An analysis of wind generation change from an echelon and a farm for passage of a thunderstorm is presented. Reduction of the wind generation change over ten minutes is shown to reduce the increase in spinning reserve, unloadable generation and load following requirements on unit commitment when significant WECS generation is present and the farm penetration constraint is satisfied. Controls on the blade pitch angle of all wind turbines in an array or a battery control are shown to reduce both the wind generation change out of an array and the effective farm penetration in anticipation of a storm so that the farm penetration constraint may be satisfied
Cold Compressed Baryonic Matter with Hidden Local Symmetry and Holography
I describe a novel phase structure of cold dense baryonic matter predicted in
a hidden local symmetry approach anchored on gauge theory and in a holographic
dual approach based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model of string theory. This new
phase is populated with baryons with half-instanton quantum number in the
gravity sector which is dual to half-skyrmion in gauge sector in which chiral
symmetry is restored while light-quark hadrons are in the color-confined phase.
It is suggested that such a phase that aries at a density above that of normal
nuclear matter and below or at the chiral restoration point can have a drastic
influence on the properties of hadrons at high density, in particular on
short-distance interactions between nucleons, e.g., multi-body forces at short
distance and hadrons -- in particular kaons -- propagating in a dense medium.
Potentially important consequences on the structure of compact stars will be
predicted.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in proceedings of "Strong Coupling Gauge Theories

Enhancing the conductance of a two-electron nanomechanical oscillator
We consider electron transport through a mobile island (i.e., a
nanomechanical oscillator) which can accommodate one or two excess electrons
and show that, in contrast to immobile islands, the Coulomb blockade peaks,
associated with the first and second electrons entering the island, have
different functional dependences on the nano-oscillator parameters when the
island coupling to its leads is asymmetric. In particular, the conductance for
the second electron (i.e., when the island is already charged) is greatly
enhanced in comparison to the conductance of the first electron in the presence
of an external electric field. We also analyze the temperature dependence of
the two conduction peaks and show that these exhibit different functional
behaviors.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
