    Opportunistic Interference Mitigation Achieves Optimal Degrees-of-Freedom in Wireless Multi-cell Uplink Networks

    We introduce an opportunistic interference mitigation (OIM) protocol, where a user scheduling strategy is utilized in KK-cell uplink networks with time-invariant channel coefficients and base stations (BSs) having MM antennas. Each BS opportunistically selects a set of users who generate the minimum interference to the other BSs. Two OIM protocols are shown according to the number SS of simultaneously transmitting users per cell: opportunistic interference nulling (OIN) and opportunistic interference alignment (OIA). Then, their performance is analyzed in terms of degrees-of-freedom (DoFs). As our main result, it is shown that KMKM DoFs are achievable under the OIN protocol with MM selected users per cell, if the total number NN of users in a cell scales at least as SNR(K1)M\text{SNR}^{(K-1)M}. Similarly, it turns out that the OIA scheme with SS(<M<M) selected users achieves KSKS DoFs, if NN scales faster than SNR(K1)S\text{SNR}^{(K-1)S}. These results indicate that there exists a trade-off between the achievable DoFs and the minimum required NN. By deriving the corresponding upper bound on the DoFs, it is shown that the OIN scheme is DoF optimal.     Characterization of thermally aged AlPO4-coated LiCoO2 thin films

    The electrochemical properties and stability during storage of pristine and AlPO4-coated LiCoO2 thin films were characterized. The wide and smooth surface of the thin film electrode might provide an opportunity for one to observe surface reactions with an electrolyte. The rate capability and cyclic performance of the LiCoO2 thin film were enhanced by AlPO4 surface coating. Based on secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis and scanning electron microscopy images of the surface, it was confirmed that the coating layer was successfully protected from the reactive electrolyte during storage at 90°C. In contrast, the surface of the pristine sample was severely damaged after storage

    Recursive circulants and their embeddings among hypercubes

    AbstractWe propose an interconnection structure for multicomputer networks, called recursive circulant. Recursive circulant G(N,d) is defined to be a circulant graph with N nodes and jumps of powers of d. G(N,d) is node symmetric, and has some strong hamiltonian properties. G(N,d) has a recursive structure when N=cdm, 1⩽c<d. We develop a shortest-path routing algorithm in G(cdm,d), and analyze various network metrics of G(cdm,d) such as connectivity, diameter, mean internode distance, and visit ratio. G(2m,4), whose degree is m, compares favorably to the hypercube Qm. G(2m,4) has the maximum possible connectivity, and its diameter is ⌈(3m−1)/4⌉. Recursive circulants have interesting relationship with hypercubes in terms of embedding. We present expansion one embeddings among recursive circulants and hypercubes, and analyze the costs associated with each embedding. The earlier version of this paper appeared in Park and Chwa (Proc.     Estimation of an Examinee's Ability in the Web-Based Computerized Adaptive Testing Program IRT-CAT

    We developed a program to estimate an examinee s ability in order to provide freely available access to a web-based computerized adaptive testing (CAT) program. We used PHP and Java Script as the program languages, PostgresSQL as the database management system on an Apache web server and Linux as the operating system. A system which allows for user input and searching within inputted items and creates tests was constructed. We performed an ability estimation on each test based on a Rasch model and 2- or 3-parametric logistic models. Our system provides an algorithm for a web-based CAT, replacing previous personal computer-based ones, and makes it possible to estimate an examinee's ability immediately at the end of test

    Can One Achieve Multiuser Diversity in Uplink Multi-Cell Networks?

    We introduce a distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) strategy, based on two pre-determined thresholds, for uplink KK-cell networks with time-invariant channel coefficients. Each base station (BS) opportunistically selects a mobile station (MS) who has a large signal strength of the desired channel link among a set of MSs generating a sufficiently small interference to other BSs. Then, performance on the achievable throughput scaling law is analyzed. As our main result, it is shown that the achievable sum-rate scales as Klog(SNRlogN)K\log(\text{SNR}\log N) in a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, if the total number of users in a cell, NN, scales faster than SNRK11ϵ\text{SNR}^{\frac{K-1}{1-\epsilon}} for a constant ϵ(0,1)\epsilon\in(0,1). This result indicates that the proposed scheme achieves the multiuser diversity gain as well as the degrees-of-freedom gain even under multi-cell environments.
