    Effects of noise on a model of oscillatory chemical reaction

    A simple oscillating reaction model subject to additive Gaussian white noise is investigated as the model is located in the dynamic region of oscillations. The model is composed of three ordinary differential equations representing the time evolutions of X, Y, and Z, respectively. Initially, a uniform random noise is separately added to the three equations to study the effect of noise on the oscillatory cycle of X, Y, and Z. For a given value of noise intensity, the amplitude of oscillation increases monotonically with time. Furthermore, the noise is added to any one of the three equations to study the impact of noise on one species on the bifurcation behavior of the other

    In this paper we would like to present the profile of another cosmopolitanism through critical reconstruction of one of the core elements in Chinese political imaginary, the conception of Tianxiaweigong (天下爲公), which means literally: All under the Heaven belongs to the public. The first meaning of another cosmopolitanism lies in the fact that it starts not from the main western tradition of cosmopolitanism, but from the tradition of Confucian political thoughts. However, it has a second, but more important meaning that is concerned with two deficits which the cosmopolitan publicness in the age of global risks should cope with; the democratic deficit and what we would like to call ecological deficits. The critical cosmopolitan project in the age of global risks needs to be reflective in dual senses to cope with both two deficits. The second meaning of another cosmopolitanism lies in this critical cosmopolitan project

    Expression analysis of diosgenin pathway genes and diosgenin accumulation in fenugreek sprouts after exposure to copper sulfate

    Trigonella foenum-graecum L. is an annual herb belonging to the family Fabaceae commonly called Fenugreek. It is rich in various secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and steroidal saponins. In recent years, diosgenin has much attention in the cosmetic, functional food, and pharmaceutical industries. In this study we aimed to examine the effect of different concentrations of copper sulfate (CuSO4) on growth, diosgenin biosynthetic (DB) gene expression, and diosgenin accumulation in T. foenum-graecum sprouts. Results showed that the seed germination, fresh weight, shoot length, and root length were gradually decreased with increasing the CuSO4 concentrations. In contrast, the expression level of DBGs i.e., TfSQS, TfSQLE, TfCAS, and TfSTRL were gradually upregulated with increasing the CuSO4 concentrations. Among all those tested concentrations, the expression levels of all those genes were significantly higher in 0.5 mM CuSO4 treated sprouts. The highest expression level was obtained in the TfCAS gene, which was 3.25-fold higher than the unexposed sprouts. The diosgenin content was significantly influenced in the CuSO4 exposed sprouts. The highest diosgenin content was achieved in the 5.0 mM followed by 1.0, 10.0, and 0.5 mM CuSO4 exposed concentrations, with a reduction of 41%, 39%, 36%, and 35%, respectively. From these results, it is shown that exposure of fenugreek sprout to CuSO4 is one of the suitable strategies to enhance the accumulation of diosgenin content

    Analysis of triterpenoids, carotenoids, and phenylpropanoids in the flowers, leaves, roots, and stems of white bitter melon (Cucurbitaceae, Momordica charantia)

    Purpose: To evaluate the contents of carotenoids, triterpenoids, and phenylpropanoids in different parts of white bitter melon.Methods: We evaluated the accumulation of 2 triterpenoids, 10 carotenoids, and 11 phenylpropanoids in different parts of white bitter melon, including fruits at four different developmental stages using HPLC.Results: Charantin, lutein, and rutin were the main triterpenoids, carotenoids, and phenylpropanoids, respectively. The accumulation of triterpenoids (momordicine and charantin), carotenoids (antheraxanthin, lutein, violaxanthin, α-carotene, and β-carotene), and phenylpropanoids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, rutin, and trans-cinnamic acid) was high inthe leaves and/or flowers, which are exposed to direct sunlight, but low in the roots.Conclusion: Most of the analyzed components were accumulated at high levels in the leaves and/or flowers. These results will help exploit the compounds in various parts of white bitter melon that are beneficial for human health.     Analysis of genetic characteristics of pig breeds using information on single nucleotide polymorphisms

    Objective This study was undertaken to investigate the genetic characteristics of Berkshire (BS), Landrace (LR), and Yorkshire (YS) pig breeds raised in the Great Grandparents pig farms using the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) information. Methods A total of 25,921 common SNP genotype markers in three pig breeds were used to estimate the expected heterozygosity (HE), polymorphism information content, F-statistics (FST), linkage disequilibrium (LD) and effective population size (Ne). Results The chromosome-wise distribution of FST in BS, LR, and YS populations were within the range of 0–0.36, and the average FST value was estimated to be 0.07±0.06. This result indicated some level of genetic segregation. An average LD (r2) for the BS, LR, and YS breeds was estimated to be approximately 0.41. This study also found an average Ne of 19.9 (BS), 31.4 (LR), and 34.1 (YS) over the last 5th generations. The effective population size for the BS, LR, and YS breeds decreased at a consistent rate from 50th to 10th generations ago. With a relatively faster Ne decline rate in the past 10th generations, there exists possible evidence for intensive selection practices in pigs in the recent past. Conclusion To develop customized chips for the genomic selection of various breeds, it is important to select and utilize SNP based on the genetic characteristics of each breed. Since the improvement efficiency of breed pigs increases sharply by the population size, it is important to increase test units for the improvement and it is desirable to establish the pig improvement network system to expand the unit of breed pig improvement through the genetic connection among breed pig farms

    Performance and Vibration Analyses of Lift-Offset Helicopters

    A validation study on the performance and vibration analyses of the XH-59A compound helicopter is conducted to establish techniques for the comprehensive analysis of lift-offset compound helicopters. This study considers the XH-59A lift-offset compound helicopter using a rigid coaxial rotor system as a verification model. CAMRAD II (Comprehensive Analytical Method of Rotorcraft Aerodynamics and Dynamics II), a comprehensive analysis code, is used as a tool for the performance, vibration, and loads analyses. A general free wake model, which is a more sophisticated wake model than other wake models, is used to obtain good results for the comprehensive analysis. Performance analyses of the XH-59A helicopter with and without auxiliary propulsion are conducted in various flight conditions. In addition, vibration analyses of the XH-59A compound helicopter configuration are conducted in the forward flight condition. The present comprehensive analysis results are in good agreement with the flight test and previous analyses. Therefore, techniques for the comprehensive analysis of lift-offset compound helicopters are appropriately established. Furthermore, the rotor lifts are calculated for the XH-59A lift-offset compound helicopter in the forward flight condition to investigate the airloads characteristics of the ABC™ (Advancing Blade Concept) rotor

    Management of Proximal Iliac Artery Injury during Lumbar Discectomy with Stent Graft

    Iatrogenic vascular injuries during lumbar disc surgery may occur rarely but they are serious complications, which can be fatal without appropriate management. Prompt diagnosis and management of these complications are imperative to prevent a desperate outcome. A 72-year-old female with proximal left common iliac artery iatrogenic injury during lumbar discectomy was successfully treated by percutaneous deployment of a stent graft in an emergency setting. Postprocedural angiogram demonstrated complete exclusion of the iliac artery laceration. The patient became hemodynamically stable. Two weeks later she complained of vascular claudication. Follow-up angiography revealed decreased arterial flow in the opposite common iliac artery. An additional kissing stent was inserted into the right common iliac artery and the symptoms of vascular claudication disappeared. Endovascular stenting offers a safe and effective method for the treatment of an iatrogenic arterial laceration, particularly in a critical condition. But, the contralateral iliac arterial flow should be kept intact in case of proximal iliac artery injury. Otherwise, additional treatments may be needed
