An efficient virtual patient image model: interview training in pharmacy

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development of a virtual patient simulation by a 3D talking head and its use by pharmacy students as a training aid for patient consultation. The paper concentrates on the virtual patient modeling, its synthesis with a speech engine and facial expression interaction. The virtual patient model is developed in three stages: building a personalized 3D face model; animation of the face model; and speech driven face synthesis. The model is used in conjunction with a training artificial intelligence module that creates several scenarios in which the student oral interview ability is assessed. The final evaluation phase is a randomized controlled trial at three partner universities: The University of Newcastle, Monash University and Charles Stuart University. It shows the potential to revolutionize the way pharmacy studentsā€™ training is conducted

What do Employers expect from Business Analysts and is it captured by the ā€œBusiness Analysis Body of Knowledgeā€ (BABOK)?

    Get PDF
Emerging professions need to define their role and contributions to business and society. An important part of this is setting policies and definitions of what constitutes a professional and professional practice in their discipline. This information is increasingly being captured and codified using tools such as Bodies of Knowledge, Quality Frameworks and Codes of Practice. The International Institute for Business Analysis defined a Body of Knowledge for Business Analysis (BABOK). This paper reports on a longitudinal survey of 240 SEEK advertisements over a six year period investigating how closely the skills and knowledge required for Business Analysis positions matched those defined within BABOK. This exploratory and qualitative study used secondary sources, so generalizability of results has limitations. Nevertheless, interesting patterns were observed. There was strong evidence that the ā€œCompetenciesā€ defined within BABOK are sought by employers. However, surprisingly little reference was made to many of the BABOK Knowledge Areas

A metal-organic framework (MOF) was prepared based on a 1D column made of a linear trinuclear manganese cluster as a secondary building unit (SBU), where the SBU is connected to two adjacent SBUs by carboxylates to form a 1D column and the column is further connected to four adjacent 1D columns via the SBUs to form a microporous MOF of pcu network topology.close7

Genetic Association Analysis of Fasting and 1- and 2-Hour Glucose Tolerance Test Data Using a Generalized Index of Dissimilarity Measure for the Korean Population

    Get PDF
Glucose tolerance tests have been devised to determine the speed of blood glucose clearance. Diabetes is often tested with the standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), along with fasting glucose level. However, no single test may be sufficient for the diagnosis, and the World Health Organization (WHO)/International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has suggested composite criteria. Accordingly, a single multi-class trait was constructed with three of the fasting phenotypes and 1- and 2-hour OGTT phenotypes from the Korean Association Resource (KARE) project, and the genetic association was investigated. All of the 18 possible combinations made out of the 3 sets of classification for the individual phenotypes were taken into our analysis. These were possible due to a method that was recently developed by us for estimating genomic associations using a generalized index of dissimilarity. Eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were found to have the strongest main effect are reported with the corresponding genes. Four of them conform to previous reports, located in the CDKAL1 gene, while the other 4 SNPs are new findings. Two-order interacting SNP pairs of are also presented. One pair (rs2328549 and rs6486740) has a prominent association, where the two single-nucleotide polymorphism locations are CDKAL1 and GLT1D1. The latter has not been found to have a strong main effect. New findings may result from the proper construction and analysis of a composite trait

Entropically driven self-assembly of a strained hexanuclear indium metal-organic macrocycle and its behavior in solution

    Get PDF
The self-assembly of a polyprotic pentadentate ligand, N-cyclopentanoylaminobenzoylhydrazide (H4L4), and an In(III) nitrate hydrate in methanol led to a strained hexanuclear indium metal-organic macrocycle (In-MOM), [In(III)(6)(H2L4)(6)(NO3)(x)(solvent)(6-x)](NO3)(6-x) (where, the solvent is either methanol or a water molecule and x is the number of the nitrate anions ligated). The ligand in the doubly deprotonated state serves as an unsymmetric linear ditopic donor and the alternating indium ions in two different chelation modes serve as two different bent ditopic metal acceptors, which led to a D-3-symmetric hexanuclear In-MOM. Although the hexanuclear In-MOM is enthalpically unfavorable because of the ring strain, the combination of the soft coordination characteristic of the indium ion and the slight ligand deformation from the conjugated planar conformation allows the formation of the entropically favored hexanuclear In-MOM rather than the enthalpically favored octanuclear In-MOM. While the hexanuclear In-MOM is stable in acetonitrile, it partially dissociates into its components in dimethylsulfoxide, and then slowly reaches a new equilibrium state with several different indium species yet to be identified in addition to the free ligand.close4

Prosthetic Aortic Valve Stenosis in End-Stage Renal Failure

    Get PDF
Although renal failure is one of the known comorbidities associated with rapid progression of aortic stenosis, it is unclear whether hemodialysis alters the progression of prosthetic aortic valve stenosis. We describe a 79-year-old female who underwent bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement 8 years ago with stable prosthetic valve area for the initial 6 years. In the last two years, coinciding with the initiation of maintenance hemodialysis, she developed progressive prosthetic valve stenosis to the point of clinical decompensation. She underwent a second prosthetic aortic valve replacement with symptom resolution. This case suggests that circulating milieu in end-stage renal failure and dialysis can accelerate the progression of prosthetic aortic valve stenosis. More frequent clinical followup and surveillance echocardiogram for dialysis patients with bioprosthetic aortic valve may facilitate timely management of valvular stenosis
