The effects of regional and industry-wide FDI spillovers on export of Ukrainian firms
In this paper we investigate the effects of region and industrywide spillovers from foreign direct investment (FDI) on the volumes of export of Ukrainian manufacturing firms, using (name of the data set) panel data from 1996-2000. Economic theory suggests that FDI has direct and indirect effects on firm’s performance. Our analysis focuses on the indirect effects like competition and linkage effects through industrial and regional spillovers respectively. We use a simple Cournot competition model in order to test for industrial and regional spillovers. The estimation results suggest that large firms, durablegoods makers, and firms located in urban areas benefit most from FDI spillovers. --transition economies,Ukraine, foreign direct investment, spillovers
Direct and Indirect Detection of Neutralino Dark Matter and Collider Signatures in an Model with Two Intermediate Scales
We investigate the detectability of neutralino Dark Matter via direct and
indirect searches as well as collider signatures of an model with two
intermediate scales. We compare the direct Dark Matter detection cross section
and the muon flux due to neutralino annihilation in the Sun that we obtain in
this model with mSUGRA predictions and with the sensitivity of current and
future experiments. In both cases, we find that the detectability improves as
the model deviates more from mSUGRA. In order to study collider signatures, we
choose two benchmark points that represent the main phenomenological features
of the model: a lower value of and reduced third generation sfermion
masses due to extra Yukawa coupling contributions in the Renormalization Group
Equations, and increased first and second generation slepton masses due to new
gaugino loop contributions. We show that measurements at the LHC can
distinguish this model from mSUGRA in both cases, by counting events containing
leptonically decaying bosons, heavy neutral Higgs bosons, or like--sign
lepton pairs.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figure
The Gluon Spin in the Chiral Bag Model
We study the gluon polarization contribution at the quark model
renormalization scale to the proton spin, , in the chiral bag model. It
is evaluated by taking the expectation value of the forward matrix element of a
local gluon operator in the axial gauge . It is shown that the confining
boundary condition for the color electric field plays an important role. When a
solution satisfying the boundary condition for the color electric field, which
is not the conventionally used but which we favor, is used, the has a
positive value for {\it all} bag radii and its magnitude is comparable to the
quark spin polarization. This results in a significant reduction in the
relative fraction of the proton spin carried by the quark spin, which is
consistent with the small flavor singlet axial current measured in the EMC
experiments.Comment: Corrections to figure
A monolithic and flexible fluoropolymer film microreactor for organic synthesis applications
A photocurable and viscous fluoropolymer with chemical stability is a highly desirable material for fabrication of microchemical devices. Lack of a reliable fabrication method, however, limits actual applications for organic reactions. Herein, we report fabrication of a monolithic and flexible fluoropolymer film microreactor and its use as a new microfluidic platform. The fabrication involves facile soft lithography techniques that enable partial curing of thin laminates, which can be readily bonded by conformal contact without any external forces. We demonstrate fabrication of various functional channels (similar to 300 mu m thick) such as those embedded with either a herringbone micromixer pattern or a droplet generator. Organic reactions under strongly acidic and basic conditions can be carried out in this film microreactor even at elevated temperature with excellent reproducibility. In particular, the transparent film microreactor with good deformability could be wrapped around a light-emitting lamp for close contact with the light source for efficient photochemical reactions with visible light, which demonstrates easy integration with optical components for functional miniaturized systems.open1112Ysciescopu
Electronic structures of doped anatase : (M=Co, Mn, Fe, Ni)
We have investigated electronic structures of a room temperature diluted
magnetic semiconductor : Co-doped anatase . We have obtained the
half-metallic ground state in the local-spin-density approximation(LSDA) but
the insulating ground state in the LSDA++SO incorporating the spin-orbit
interaction. In the stoichiometric case, the low spin state of Co is realized
with the substantially large orbital moment. However, in the presence of oxygen
vacancies near Co, the spin state of Co becomes intermediate. The
ferromagnetisms in the metallic and insulating phases are accounted for by the
double-exchange-like and the superexchange mechanism, respectively. Further,
the magnetic ground states are obtained for Mn and Fe doped ,
while the paramagnetic ground state for Ni-doped .Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
