An Innovative Experiment by Chinese Organisations in the Post-Suharto Era
This paper explores the role and meaning of Chinese-Indonesian civic organisations, which have emerged in Indonesia since the fall of the Suharto regime in May 1998 in preventing recurring ethnic violence. The paper analyses relationships between Chinese and indigenous Indonesians and the sufferings of Chinese Indonesians before and during the May 1998 riots. The paper then investigates reactions of the Chinese community to the riots. It highlights the activities of inter-ethnic civic organisations including the Indonesian Chinese Association (INTI), Homeland Solidarity (SNB), the Indonesian Anti-Discrimination Movement (GANDI), and the Volunteer Team for Humanity (TRuK) in mobilising various stake-holders to fight for legal justice and protect minority rights in the post-Suharto era. Their endeavours are a new and innovative experiment in Indonesian history. The paper argues that in the post-Suharto era, the security of Chinese Indonesians is being improved as the activities of these inter-ethnic civic organisations and their networks build social trust and promote cooperation between Chinese and indigenous Indonesians
PAGaN I: Multi-Frequency Polarimetry of AGN Jets with KVN
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with bright radio jets offer the opportunity to
study the structure of and physical conditions in relativistic outflows. For
such studies, multi-frequency polarimetric very long baseline interferometric
(VLBI) observations are important as they directly probe particle densities,
magnetic field geometries, and several other parameters. We present results
from first-epoch data obtained by the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) within the
frame of the Plasma Physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (PAGaN) project. We
observed seven radio-bright nearby AGN at frequencies of 22, 43, 86, and 129
GHz in dual polarization mode. Our observations constrain apparent brightness
temperatures of jet components and radio cores in our sample to K
and K, respectively. Degrees of linear polarization are
relatively low overall: less than 10%. This indicates suppression of
polarization by strong turbulence in the jets. We found an exceptionally high
degree of polarization in a jet component of BL Lac at 43 GHz, with 40%. Assuming a transverse shock front propagating downstream along the
jet, the shock front being almost parallel to the line of sight can explain the
high degree of polarization.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. To appear in JKAS (received 2015 July

GAIT ANALYSIS OF THE NORMAL AND ACL DEFICIENT PATIENTS AFTER LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of the knee is common in sports. A serious ACL injury leads to ligament reconstruction surgery. In order to evaluate result of surgery or optimize the rehabilitation process, a knee condition must be objectively identified. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to numerically indicate and classify knee condition of patients via the chaos analysis. Lyapunov exponents (LyEs) were used for the comparison of the normal and the patients
Jitter reduction technique for acoustic radiation force impulse microscopy via photoacoustic detection
We demonstrate a jitter noise reduction technique for acoustic radiation force impulse microscopy via photoacoustic detection (PA-ARFI), which promises to be capable of measuring cell mechanics. To reduce the jitter noise induced by Q-switched pulsed laser operated at high repetition frequency, photoacoustic signals from the surface of an ultrasound transducer are aligned by cross-correlation and peak-to-peak detection, respectively. Each method is then employed to measure the displacements of a target sample in an agar phantom and a breast cancer cell due to ARFI application, followed by the quantitative comparison between their performances. The suggested methods for PA-ARFI significantly reduce jitter noises, thus allowing us to measure displacements of a target cell due to ARFI application by less than 3 μm. © 2015 Optical Society of America.1
