    A Particle Dispersion Model For Analysis Of Two-Dimensional Mixing In Open Channels

    Pollutant mixing in natural rivers is analyzed by using the two-dimensional depth-averaged advection-dispersion model (2D ADE) for rapid completion of the vertical mixing. The dispersion term in the 2D ADE follows Taylor’s assumption (Taylor, 1954; Fischer et al., 1979) which can be applied in the Taylor period. However, most open channel flow has long initial period which makes the skewed concentration distribution due to the unbalance between the shear flow advection and the vertical mixing (Chatwin, 1970). Therefore, the non-Fickian dispersion model is necessary to compensate the limitations of the 2D ADE model. In this research, the two-dimensional particle dispersion model (2D PDM) was developed to analyze the pollutant mixing both in the initial and the Taylor period without determination of the dispersion coefficient. In the 2D PDM, pollutant particles were introduced to visualize physical mixing process according to the complicate flow variation in open channels. The 2D PDM is based on the shear flow dispersion theory and adopted the operator split method which divides the shear advection stage and the turbulent diffusion stage. In the shear advection stage, particles were separated by the vertical velocity deviations in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The separated particles according to the shear flow were mixed across the vertical in the turbulent diffusion stage. After the particle mixing, the particle distribution in each time step was converted to the concentration field for various analysis. The 2D PDM was applied to the straight channel and the meandering channel for analysis of the conservative pollutant mixing. In the straight channel, concentration curves from the 2D PDM showed skewed distribution in the initial period and then turned into the Gaussian distribution in the Taylor period. And, the concentration distributions in the meandering channel showed good agreement with the tracer test results

    Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is an important means for postoperative analgesia with parenteral opioid. However, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains a major problem with a PCA system. Droperidol is used in PCA to prevent PONV. Extrapyramidal reactions by droperidol are, however, occasionally induced. We describe two cases of severe extrapyramidal hypertonic syndrome with an intravenous administration of droperidol in PCA in young patients, following orthopedic surgery

    Relationship between Physical Disability and Depression by Gender:A Panel Regression Model

    Background Depression in persons with physical disabilities may be more common than in the general population. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical disability and depression by gender among adults, using a large, nationally representative sample. Methods This study used data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, Wave one through four, and ran a series of random effect panel regression models to test the relationship between physical disability status and depression by gender. We tested the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between disability status and depression level by examining the significance of the cross-product term between disability status and gender. Results After controlling for self-rated health, marital status, employment status, education, and age, subjects who were female or diagnosed as having any disability presented higher levels of depression scores. Further, the difference in terms of their depression level measured by Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale (CES-D 10) scores between those who were diagnosed as having any disability and those who were not was greater for females than for their male counterparts. Conclusion This study reaffirmed that disability is the risk factor of depression, using longitudinal data. In addition, female gender is the effect modifier rather than the risk factor. The effect of gender in the non-disability group, mostly composed of older persons, is limited. On the contrary, the female disability group showed more depressive symptoms than the male disability group. The gender difference in the disability group and the role of culture on these differences need further research

    An Experimental Study on the Thermal Conductivity of Concrete Containing Coal Bottom Ash Aggregate

    Thermal conductivity plays a significant role in efficient energy usage, especially in the construction field. Low thermal conductivity is preferable because lower thermal conductivity will increase the thermal insulation provided by the concrete and reduce the heating and cooling costs for residential and commercial buildings. To accomplish this goal, porous materials can be considered for use in concrete. Additionally, researchers have had challenges producing high-strength concrete with low thermal conductivity. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of replacing crushed fine aggregates with coal bottom ash (CBA) on the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of high-strength concrete. The concrete properties, including unit weight, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity, were measured. The experimental results revealed that the thermal conductivity of the CBA concrete decreased as the unit weight of the CBA concrete decreased, and the thermal conductivity also decreased as the compressive strength decreased. Finally, the relationships between the thermal conductivity, unit weight, and compressive strength of the CBA concrete were also examined

    Ophthalmic Artery Obstruction and Cerebral Infarction Following Periocular Injection of Autologous Fat

    We report a case of ophthalmic artery obstruction combined with brain infarction following periocular autologous fat injection. The patient, a 44-year-old woman, visited our hospital for decreased visual acuity in her left eye and dysarthria one hour after receiving an autologous fat injection in the periocular area. Her best corrected visual acuity for the concerned eye was no light perception. Also, a relative afferent pupillary defect was detected in this eye. The left fundus exhibited widespread retinal whitening with visible emboli in several retinal arterioles. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a hyperintense lesion at the left insular cortex. Therefore, we diagnosed ophthalmic artery obstruction and left middle cerebral artery infarction due to fat emboli. The patient was managed with immediate ocular massage, carbon dioxide, and oxygen therapy. Following treatment, dysarthria improved considerably but there was no improvement in visual acuity

    AbstractOn March 16th, 2010, at 13:35, a single count of dark morph tree sparrow (Passer montanus) was observed for approximately 15 minutes while it was resting with approximately 30 ordinary tree sparrows at a terrace land on water (east longitude 127°21′31.4”, north latitude 36°18′20.2”) under Gasuwon Bridge (Gasuwongyo) of Gasuwon-dong, Seo-gu in Daejeon Metropolitan City. Dark morph tree sparrow has not been observed in nature for 16 years since its observation in Pyeongtaek-gun of Gyeonggi-do by the Korean Avian Association in 1994

    Deterministic integration of quantum dots into on-chip multi-mode interference beamsplitters using in-situ electron beam lithography

    The development of multi-node quantum optical circuits has attracted great attention in recent years. In particular, interfacing quantum-light sources, gates and detectors on a single chip is highly desirable for the realization of large networks. In this context, fabrication techniques that enable the deterministic integration of pre-selected quantum-light emitters into nanophotonic elements play a key role when moving forward to circuits containing multiple emitters. Here, we present the deterministic integration of an InAs quantum dot into a 50/50 multi-mode interference beamsplitter via in-situ electron beam lithography. We demonstrate the combined emitter-gate interface functionality by measuring triggered single-photon emission on-chip with g(2)(0)=0.13±0.02g^{(2)}(0) = 0.13\pm 0.02. Due to its high patterning resolution as well as spectral and spatial control, in-situ electron beam lithography allows for integration of pre-selected quantum emitters into complex photonic systems. Being a scalable single-step approach, it paves the way towards multi-node, fully integrated quantum photonic chips.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

    Anti-malarial activity of 6-(8'Z-pentadecenyl)-salicylic acid from Viola websteri in mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Petroleum ether extracts of <it>Viola websteri </it>Hemsl (Violaceae) were reported to have anti-plasmodial activity against <it>Plasmodium falciparum in vitro</it>, with this activity being largely attributable to 6-(8'Z-pentadecenyl)-salicylic acid (6-SA).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The schizontocidal activity of 6-SA on early <it>Plasmodium berghei </it>infections was evaluated in a four-day test. The possible 'repository' activity of 6-SA was assessed using the method described by Peters. The median lethal dose (LD<sub>50</sub>) of 6-SA, when given intraperitoneally, was also determined using uninfected ICR mice and the method of Lorke.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, 6-SA was found to have anti-malarial activity <it>in vivo</it>, when tested against <it>P. berghei </it>in mice. 6-SA at 5, 10 and 25 mg/kg·day exhibited a significant blood schizontocidal activity in four-day early infections, repository evaluations and established infections with a significant mean survival time comparable to that of the standard drug, chloroquine (5 mg/kg·day).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>6-SA possesses a moderate anti-malarial activity that could be exploited for malaria therapy.</p

    Optical Spectroscopy of Supernova Remnants in M81 and M82

    We present spectroscopy of 28 SNR candidates as well as one H II region in M81, and two SNR candidates in M82. Twenty six out of the M81 candidates turn out to be genuine SNRs, and two in M82 may be shocked condensations in the galactic outflow or SNRs. The distribution of [N II]/H{\alpha} ratios of M81 SNRs is bimodal. M81 SNRs are divided into two groups in the spectral line ratio diagrams: an [O III]-strong group and an [O III]-weak group. The latter have larger sizes, and may have faster shock velocity. [N II]/H{\alpha} ratios of the SNRs show a strong correlation with [S II]/H{\alpha} ratios. They show a clear radial gradient in [N II]/H{\alpha} and [S II]/H{\alpha} ratios: dLog ([N II]/H{\alpha})/dLog R = -0.018 {\pm} 0.008 dex/kpc and dLog ([S II]/H{\alpha})/dLog R = -0.016 {\pm} 0.008 dex/kpc where R is a deprojected galactocentric distance. We estimate the nitrogen and oxygen abundance of the SNRs from the comparison with shock-ionization models. We obtain a value for the nitrogen radial gradient, dLog(N/H)/dLogR = -0.023 {\pm} 0.009 dex/kpc, and little evidence for the gradient in oxygen. This nitrogen abundance shows a few times flatter gradient than those of the planetary nebulae and H II regions. We find that five SNRs are matched with X-ray sources.
