When economists 'tell histories': the truncated story of central banks' cooperation over the bimetallic period
'In this article, the author assesses the meaning of the controversies about the French and British central banks' solidarity over the bimetallic period (1850-1870). Her purpose is to highlight how historical case studies can become the instrument of a distorted economic view. In the main stream literature, the argument of the discount rates correlation is turned into rivalry between the two issuing institutions. This view omits the reading of Bimetallism as a coordinated discount rate policy of the French and British central banks and supports bimetallism as a self-equilibrating system.' (author's abstract)

Clément Juglar and Algeria: three pillars of modern anti-colonial criticism
The objective of this paper is to recall the forgotten opposition of Clément Juglar to the colonization of Algeria, the originality of this position, and his contributions to the genesis of analysing colonial institutions. Juglar was not a theoretician of colonialism, but a liberal economist who rejected the process of colonization on economic grounds. This paper provides evidence that conventional wisdom on French colonialism is indebted to his work. The issues of capital returns in the colonies, French colonialism as mercantilism and protectionism, and the role of colonial institutions in economic development were all addressed by Juglar. He identified property rights and colonial institutions as central issues in his explanation of the predictable failure of colonialism, and in doing so he can be regarded as a forerunner of neo-institutionalist analysis of colonialism

Project Testbed: Argument Mapping and Deliberation Analytics
One key goal of the Catalyst project was to design metrics that could capture and represent aspects of the conversation’s structural quality, to assist harvesters and moderators. Many such metrics, alerts and visualizations were developed in the course of the project, but initial user testing has shown that users find it difficult to interpret abstract signals. Following that, we have both introduced new analytics that we felt could be more directly useful, and improved the representation of existing ones. We evaluated their usefulness in a smaller conversation and in experimental settings
The rationality of French investors before World War I: a cliometric contribution
(Autorenreferat)'This paper can be seen as an illustration of the cliometric approach and its contribution to the knowledge of French international capital movements before WW1. Using a formal theoretical framework and advanced econometric technics improves our understanding of the influences of French capital exports from the end of the 19th century until the eve of World War. The author's recall here the main findings of their research published in The Journal of Economic History (June 2004) which highlights the crucial incidence of economic and financial factors, whereas conventional wisdom limited the explanation of French capital exports to political and diplomatic causes.'
Revisiting the 1929 crisis: was the Fed Pre-Keynesian? New lessons from the past
"This article is organized as follows: in section 1, the authors discuss the Bordo et al. (2002) monetarist counterfactual analysis. Section 2 presents data. In section 3, the authors address the following question: referring to Keynes' definition of liquidity trap, they ask themselves whether there were episodes of liquidity trap over the pre and post 1929 crisis period and whether the Fed modified its reaction function in consequence? Following this, in section 4 and using a SVAR approach, the authors simulate how US economic activity would have reacted following an expansionary monetary policy after the 1929 crisis. In conclusion, the authors suggest a renewed monetary lesson from the past." (author's abstract
Money growth pegging, Taylor rule, status-seeking behavior and the 'spirit of capitalism'
This paper analyzes the impact of “spirit of capitalism” on stationary welfare and stability properties of a one-sector Ramsey economy, where the demand of money is motivated by a cash-in-advance constraint on consumption expenditures. Preferences are defined over consumption and capital stock. There is a monetary authority that follows either a money growth pegging rule or an interest rate pegging rule. When a money growth pegging rule is introduced, a unique steady state emerges. A slight desire for status is a sufficient condition for an increase in the money growth rate to exert a local stabilizing effect and to improve stationary welfare. When an interest rate pegging rule is introduced, two steady states may emerge: a “liquidity trap” and an “interior” steady state. Both steady states are locally determinate. Moreover, we show that a slight desire for status is also a sufficient condition to ensure that the stationary welfare at “interior” steady state is higher than the one of the “liquidity trap”. It follows that an increase in the policy rate is, then, an efficient way to exit the “liquidity trap” steady state. Under similar conditions, a higher policy rate increases the stationary welfare at the “interior” steady state

The impact of incongruent vs. congruent food brand pairings
The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the effect of congruity within a food brand constellation on consumer attitudes, positive electronic word-of mouth, and willingness to pass along via social media. The empirical context focuses on food brands that tend to be traditionally consumed while watching sport. The study of congruity within brand constellations is important as food companies spend large sums of money on endorsers in their message promotions. After watching a short video on baseball, a sample of 250 students was shown two fake food brands stimuli ads, one featuring a congruent pairing (chips and soda) and the other, incongruent (chips and kale smoothie). The findings suggest that congruent pairings lead to better positive brand attitudes and positive word-of-mouth towards the combined brand and that incongruent pairings incur more pass-along on social media.Advertisin
