Life Saving Aspects of Pilot for Escape Aid Explosive (EAX) System Applications Some Considerations
This manuscript deals with life saving aspects of the pilot for escape aid explosive (EAX) system applicationsunder emergency situation. During the ejection from the aircraft, the pilot is subjected to the various forces suchas linear, angular and transverse accelerations, decelerations, wind drag accelerations, wind blast, dynamic forces, aerodynamic forces, spinning and tumbling. Linear accelerations (decelerations) of major interest in aviation arethose of a high magnitude and a short duration that occur in emergency ejection from the aircraft or occasionallyin a high altitude at high-speed parachute opening, as they tend to exceed the strength limitations of the skeletalstructure of the pilot body. The human body is a heterogeneous mass that is made up of solid, liquid and viscoelastic components. The effects of these forces on the pilot’s body are crucial in nature and significant pertains toan injury. This article is described with some considerations of ballistics, kinematics with different forces and theireffects on the pilot body for aircraft applications during an entire flight trajectory. In conclusion, this kind of studyis very essential considering the pilots safety and its performance at low and high altitudes during an emergency

Designing Efficient and Accurate Behavior-Aware Mobile Systems
The proliferation of sensors on smartphones, tablets and wearables has led to a plethora of behavior classification algorithms designed to sense various aspects of individual user\u27s behavior such as daily habits, activity, physiology, mobility, sleep, emotional and social contexts. This ability to sense and understand behaviors of mobile users will drive the next generation of mobile applications providing services based on the users\u27 behavioral patterns. In this thesis, we investigate ways in which we can enhance and utilize the understanding of user behaviors in such applications. In particular, we focus on identifying the key challenges in the following three aspects of behavior-aware applications: detection, understanding, and prediction of user behaviors; and present systems and techniques developed to address these challenges. In this thesis, we first demonstrate the utility of wristbands equipped with inertial sensors in real-time detection of health-related behaviors such as smoking and eating. Our approach detects these behaviors in a passive manner without any explicit user interaction and does not require use of any cumbersome device. Our results show that we can detect smoking with 95% accuracy, 91% precision and 81% recall in the natural environment. Second, we design a context-query engine for sensing multiple user contexts continuously, accurately and efficiently on mobile devices; the key necessity for understanding and analyzing behaviors. Our context-query engine performs information fusion of contexts for an individual user to enable optimizations like i) energy-efficient sensing, and ii) accurate context inference. Our results show that we can improve accuracy of a context classifier by up to 42% and reduce the number of classifiers required to observe the user state by 33%. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of predicting app usage behavior, in improving the freshness of mobile apps such as Facebook that present users with the latest content fetched from remote servers. We present an app prediction algorithm that utilizes user contexts to predict the app a user is likely to use and pre-fetches the data over the network for the predicted app. We show that our proposed algorithm delivers application content to the user that is on an average fresh within 3 minutes
Plastic Deformation of High Explosive Projectile 155 mm during Gun Launch Conditions using Finite Element Method
The structural integrity of artillery projectile 155mm high explosive Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB)boat tail designed for 155mm howitzer guns of 39, 45 and 52 calibre plays a key role inside the gun barrel. Thisprojectile comprises a shell body, a driving band, a boat tail, nubs, an explosive, and a fuze. Plastic deformationof the projectile and stripping of driving band are not permitted, when projectile is fired. An investigational study is necessitated to check the plastic deformation of the projectile subjected to maximum propellant charge pressure. The aim of this study is to check the effective plastic deformation and affirm the structural integrity. A 3-D explicit dynamic structural analysis of 155 mm HE ERFB BT during gun launch conditions is carried out by finite element method using FE code ABAQUS/Explicit. To understand the non-linear mechanical behavior of the projectile, the true stress-strain curves of the materials are considered. The plastic behavior of the projectile subjected to the time-dependent loading is studied by using the von Mises plasticity model. The results reveal that the shell body and boat tail have no plastic deformation and the most stressed component is the driving band. The investigation has affirmed the structural integrity of the projectile during gun launch conditions
Estimation of Heat Loss in a Closed Vessel
Power cartridges are designed and developed for use in military aircraft in association withHigh Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune. During development, the cartridge is firedin a closed vessel to generate basic design parameters. When the cartridge is fired, the heat islost to the walls of the vessel due to conduction, convection, radiation, and to some extent, byexpansion of the vessel. An attempt has been made to estimate the heat loss from the vesseland the surrounding. The aim of this study was to lay down the technical results theoreticallyand their validation through experiments
Ayurveda Concept of Immunity and Biological Factors Associated with Immunity
The term immunity stands for the power which protects from the diseases, the immune system acts as defense mechanism against many common diseases including infections. The Ayurveda described term Vyadhikshamatva for inherent defense mechanism. There are many drugs especially Rasayana herbs which improves immunity, Bala and Agni. Vyadhikshamatva varies person to person depending upon their Prakriti therefore some person possess good immunity while others deprived the same. The other factors such as diet, environmental factor, genetic predisposition, mental status and life style, etc. also affect Vyadhiksamatwa of individual. Bala and Ojas also associated with inherent immunity, Ojas or Bala helps to prevents manifestations of common infections thus restore normal health status. Ayurveda ways of daily regimen, balanced diet and Yoga can help to improves Vyadhikshamatva. Natural drugs like Guduchi, Ginger, Tulsi, Turmeric and Amalaki, etc. are well known for their immune boosting effects. Present article explores Ayurveda concept of immunity
Qualification Testing, Evaluation and Test Methods of Gas Generator for IEDs Applications
In this work, the design qualification testing, evaluation and test methods of gas generator using double base (DB) propellant having square flake shape is explained for an improvised explosive devices (IEDs) applications. Various kinds of the gas generators are used to save life of an aeronaut in the fastest way from the disable fighter aircraft. Due to their ruggedised design, compactness, safe transportation, repeatability in performance and quick operation, the gas generator are used. The gas generator is designed and developed keeping functional, mechanical and structural requirements in mind. The gas generators are subjected to the various qualification tests, electrical characterisation followed by closed vessel (CV) firings at hot and cold temperatures. The gas generators after the successful qualification tests are validated through the ground trials i.e. dynamic firing of disruptor during the development phase. The damage caused due to impact of the projectile is assessed in terms of crater as acceptance criteria at stand-off distance of 0.5 m and 1m. The gas generator discussed in this research article is used to disrupt the suspected IEDs by creating a high-speed jet using water-jet disruptor. In conclusion, after successful qualification testing, the gas generator for IEDs application meets all the specifications as per user’s requirements

Evaluating the transferability of Hapmap SNPs to a Singapore Chinese population

Abstract

Background

The International Hapmap project serves as a valuable resource for human genome variation data, however its applicability to other populations has yet to be exhaustively investigated. In this paper, we use high density genotyping chips and resequencing strategies to compare the Singapore Chinese population with the Hapmap populations. First we compared 1028 and 114 unrelated Singapore Chinese samples genotyped using the Illumina Human Hapmap 550 k chip and Affymetrix 500 k array respectively against the 270 samples from Hapmap. Secondly, data from 20 candidate genes on 5q31-33 resequenced for an asthma candidate gene based study was also used for the analysis.

Results

A total of 237 SNPs were identified through resequencing of which only 95 SNPs (40%) were in Hapmap; however an additional 56 SNPs (24%) were not genotyped directly but had a proxy SNP in the Hapmap. At the genome-wide level, Singapore Chinese were highly correlated with Hapmap Han Chinese with correlation of 0.954 and 0.947 for the Illumina and Affymetrix platforms respectively with deviant SNPs randomly distributed within and across all chromosomes.

Conclusions

The high correlation between our population and Hapmap Han Chinese reaffirms the applicability of Hapmap based genome-wide chips for GWA studies. There is a clear population signature for the Singapore Chinese samples and they predominantly resemble the southern Han Chinese population; however when new migrants particularly those with northern Han Chinese background were included, population stratification issues may arise. Future studies needs to address population stratification within the sample collection while designing and interpreting GWAS in the Chinese population.</p
