    We study locally conformally balanced metrics on almost abelian Lie algebras, namely solvable Lie algebras admitting an abelian ideal of codimension one, providing characterizations in every dimension. Moreover, we classify six-dimensional almost abelian Lie algebras admitting locally conformally balanced metrics and study some compatibility results between different types of special Hermitian metrics on almost abelian Lie groups and their compact quotients. We end by classifying almost abelian Lie algebras admitting locally conformally hyperk\"ahler structures.Comment: 12 page

    ChainMail: A configurable multimodal lining to enable sensate surfaces and interactive objects

    The ChainMail system is a scalable electronic sensate skin that is designed as a dense sensor network. ChainMail is built from small (1"x1") rigid circuit boards attached to their neighbors with flexible interconnects that allow the skin to be conformally arranged and manipulated. Each board contains an embedded processor together with a suite of thirteen sensors, providing dense, multimodal capture of proximate and contact phenomena. This system forms a sensate lining that can be applied to an object, device, or surface to enable interactivity.     Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve and Micronutrients Supplementation: Our Experience

    Background. Laparoscopic gastric sleeve (LGS) has been recently introduced as a stand-alone, restrictive bariatric surgery. Theoretically, LGS attenuates micronutrients deficiencies and associated complications that were typically observed following malabsorptive procedures. The aim of this study was to assess some micronutrients and mineral deficiencies in patients undergoing LGS. Methods. In the period between July 2008 and April 2010, 138 obese patients (110 females and 28 males) with mean BMI 44.4 kg/m2 ± 6.5, mean age 43.9 ± 10.9 years were enrolled and underwent LGS. Patients were followed up with routine laboratory tests and anthropometric measurements and assessed for nutritional status, as regards vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, hemoglobin, calcium, and vitamin D, every three months throughout 12 months. Results. 12 months after sleeve, patients did not show iron deficiency and/or anemia; plasma calcium levels were in the normal range without supplementation from the sixth month after the operation. Vitamin B12 and folic acid were adequately supplemented for all the follow-up period. Vitamin D was in suboptimal levels, despite daily multivitamin supplementation. Conclusion. In this study, we showed that LGS is an effective surgery for the management of morbid obesity. An adequate supplementation is important to avoid micronutrients deficiencies and greater weight loss does not require higher dosage of multivitamins

    Radical scavenging activity of olive oil phenolic antioxidants in oil or water phase during the oxidation of O/W emulsions: An oxidomics approach

    Omics approaches are recently being applied also in food lipid oxidation, to increase knowledge of oxidation and antioxidation mechanisms. The so-called oxidomics throws a wider spot of light on the complex patterns of reactions taking place in food lipids, especially in dispersed systems. This research aimed to investigate the radical scavenging activity of olive oil phenolic antioxidants (OPAs) in O/W emulsions, as affected by the phase in which they were added. This allowed one to assess whether different behaviors could be expected from antioxidants originally present in phenolic-rich olive oils compared to natural antioxidants added in the water phase during emulsion production. Hydroperoxide decomposition kinetics and the analysis of volatile pattern provided an outline of antioxidation mechanisms. Though being effective in slowing down oxidation when added both in the oil and water phase, OPAs interfered in different ways with oxidation pathways, based on the phase in which they were added. OPAs added to the water phase were more effective in slowing down hydroperoxide decomposition due to the hydrophilic radical initiator. On the other hand, OPAs present in the oil were more effective in preventing radical propagation, with relevant consequences on the volatile pattern

    NIRS assessment of brain hemodynamics

    Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) allows for assessing brain hemodynamics non-invasively. In NIRS studies, the maneuver of breath holding is frequently used as an activation of the brain autoregulation response. However, breath holding is not always feasible or effective in the clinical practice. We explored the possibility of using kapalabathi, an ancient yoga respiration technique, as an alternate activation maneuver. We studied the brain oxygenation response to kapalabathi, in yoga practitioners, in three different postures. In all the three postures considered Kapalabathi produces a measurable effect on the oxygen availability at the brain cortex level. Remarkable differences were observed in the brain autoregulatory response of smoker and non-smoker practitioners

    Prediction of Friction Stir Welding effects on AA2024-T3 plates and stiffened panels using a shell-based finite element model

    Manufacturing-induced effects significantly affect in-service behaviour of welded structures, such as integrally stiffened panels for aeronautic applications. Being a complex phenomenon with several variables involved, the assessment of the effects coming from welding usually relies on numerical simulations. Here, a novel shell-based finite element model is proposed to accurately simulate the transient thermal fields and stress-strain distributions resulting from friction stir welding (FSW) processes. The capability of the model to predict (i) residual stresses, (ii) material softening and (iii) geometric distortion of the welded parts is assessed by the modelling and simulation of FSW applied on aluminium integrally stiffened panels

    Mutual Information of Population Codes and Distance Measures in Probability Space

    We studied the mutual information between a stimulus and a large system consisting of stochastic, statistically independent elements that respond to a stimulus. The Mutual Information (MI) of the system saturates exponentially with system size. A theory of the rate of saturation of the MI is developed. We show that this rate is controlled by a distance function between the response probabilities induced by different stimuli.
