Magnon dispersion and thermodynamics in CsNiF_3
We present an accurate transfer matrix renormalization group calculation of
the thermodynamics in a quantum spin-1 planar ferromagnetic chain. We also
calculate the field dependence of the magnon gap and confirm the accuracy of
the magnon dispersion derived earlier through an 1/n expansion. We are thus
able to examine the validity of a number of previous calculations and further
analyze a wide range of experiments on CsNiF_3 concerning the magnon
dispersion, magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat. Although it is
not possible to account for all data with a single set of parameters, the
overall qualitative agreement is good and the remaining discrepancies may
reflect departure from ideal quasi-one-dimensional model behavior. Finally, we
present some indirect evidence to the effect that the popular interpretation of
the excess specific heat in terms of sine-Gordon solitons may not be
appropriate.Comment: 9 pages 10 figure
Dynamics of topological solitons in two-dimensional ferromagnets
Dynamical topological solitons are studied in classical two-dimensional
Heisenberg easy-axis ferromagnets. The properties of such solitons are treated
both analytically in the continuum limit and numerically by spin dynamics
simulations of the discrete system. Excitation of internal mode causes orbital
motion. This is confirmed by simulations.Comment: LaTeX, 15 pages, 6 figure
Asterix and Obelix in Drugland: an introduction to the special issue on âdrug marketsâ
This paper provides an introduction to the articles bringing forward empirical research findings and theoretical accounts on drug markets, raising questions about the nature of the relationship between the organization of drug markets and the official frameworks surrounding them, and, importantly, about the complexity of this relationship
Magnetic excitations in the spin-1 anisotropic antiferromagnet
The spin-1 anisotropic antiferromagnet NiCl_2-4SC(NH2)_2 exhibits a
field-induced quantum phase transition that is formally analogous to
Bose-Einstein condensation. Here we present results of systematic high-field
electron spin resonance (ESR) experimental and theoretical studies of this
compound with a special emphasis on single-ion two-magnon bound states. In
order to clarify some remaining discrepancies between theory and experiment,
the frequency-field dependence of magnetic excitations in this material is
reanalyzed. In particular, a more comprehensive interpretation of the
experimental signature of single-ion two-magnon bound states is shown to be
fully consistent with theoretical results. We also clarify the structure of the
ESR spectrum in the so-called intermediate phase.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Solitary Waves of Planar Ferromagnets and the Breakdown of the Spin-Polarized Quantum Hall Effect
A branch of uniformly-propagating solitary waves of planar ferromagnets is
identified. The energy dispersion and structures of the solitary waves are
determined for an isotropic ferromagnet as functions of a conserved momentum.
With increasing momentum, their structure undergoes a transition from a form
ressembling a droplet of spin-waves to a Skyrmion/anti-Skyrmion pair. An
instability to the formation of these solitary waves is shown to provide a
mechanism for the electric field-induced breakdown of the spin-polarized
quantum Hall effect.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps-figures, revtex with epsf.tex and multicol.st
Identification of putative nuclear receptors and steroidogenic enzymes in Murray-Darling rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluviatilis) using RNA-Seq and de novo transcriptome assembly
Murray-Darling rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluviatilis [Castelnau, 1878]; Atheriniformes: Melanotaeniidae) is a small-bodied teleost currently under development in Australasia as a test species for aquatic toxicological studies. To date, efforts towards the development of molecular biomarkers of contaminant exposure have been hindered by the lack of available sequence data. To address this, we sequenced messenger RNA from brain, liver and gonads of mature male and female fish and generated a high-quality draft transcriptome using a de novo assembly approach. 149,742 clusters of putative transcripts were obtained, encompassing 43,841 non-redundant protein-coding regions. Deduced amino acid sequences were annotated by functional inference based on similarity with sequences from manually curated protein sequence databases. The draft assembly contained protein-coding regions homologous to 95.7% of the complete cohort of predicted proteins from the taxonomically related species, Oryzias latipes (Japanese medaka). The mean length of rainbowfish protein-coding sequences relative to their medaka homologues was 92.1%, indicating that despite the limited number of tissues sampled a large proportion of the total expected number of protein-coding genes was captured in the study. Because of our interest in the effects of environmental contaminants on endocrine pathways, we manually curated subsets of coding regions for putative nuclear receptors and steroidogenic enzymes in the rainbowfish transcriptome, revealing 61 candidate nuclear receptors encompassing all known subfamilies, and 41 putative steroidogenic enzymes representing all major steroidogenic enzymes occurring in teleosts. The transcriptome presented here will be a valuable resource for researchers interested in biomarker development, protein structure and function, and contaminant-response genomics in Murray-Darling rainbowfish

Characterization of sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) in cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) play a critical role in insect chemosensory system. Previously, three SNMPs were identified, characterized and functionally investigated in a lepidopteran model insect, Bombyx mori . However, whether these results are consistent across other lepidopteran species are unknown. Here genome and transcriptome data analysis, expression profiling, quantitative realâtime PCR (qRTâPCR) and the yeast hybridization system were utilized to examine snmp genes of Helicoverpa armigera , one of the most destructive lepidopteran pests in cropping areas. In silico expression and qRTâPCR analyses showed that, just as the B. mori snmp genes, H. armigera snmp1 (Harmsnmp1 ) is specifically expressed in adult antennae. Harmsnmp2 is broadly expressed in multiple tissues including adult antennae, tarsi, larval antennae and mouthparts. Harmsnmp3 is specifically expressed in larval midguts. Further RNAseq analysis suggested that the expression levels of Harmsnmp2 and Harmsnmp3 differed significantly depending on the plant species on which the larvae fed, indicating they may be involved in plantâfeeding behaviours. Yeast hybridization results revealed a proteinâprotein interaction between HarmSNMP1 and the sex pheromone receptor, HarmOR13. This study demonstrated that SNMPs may share same functions and mechanisms in different lepidopteran species, which improved our understanding of insect snmp genes and their functions in lepidopterans
