    The 11-years solar cycle as the manifestation of the dark Universe

    The solar luminosity in the visible changes at the 10-3 level, following an 11 years period. In X-rays, which should not be there, the amplitude varies 100000 times stronger, making their mysterious origin since the discovery in 1938 even more puzzling, and inspiring. We suggest that the multifaceted mysterious solar cycle is due to some kind of dark matter streams hitting the Sun. Planetary gravitational lensing enhances (occasionally) slow moving flows of dark constituents towards the Sun, giving rise to the periodic behaviour. Jupiter provides the driving oscillatory force, though its 11.8 years orbital period appears slightly decreased, just as 11 years, if the lensing impact of other planets is included. Then, the 11 years solar clock may help to decipher (overlooked) signatures from the dark sector in laboratory experiments or observations in space.Comment: 7 pages, 1 Figure, to appear in the proceedings of the 9th Patras workshop, Mainz, German

    Subclinical VZV reactivation in immunocompetent children hospitalized in the ICU associated with prolonged fever duration*

    AbstractA prospective observational study was conducted to examine whether asymptomatic VZV reactivation occurs in immunocompetent children hospitalized in an ICU and its impact on clinical outcome. A secondary aim was to test the hypothesis that vaccinated children have a lower risk of reactivation than naturally infected children. Forty immunocompetent paediatric ICU patients and healthy controls were enrolled. Patients were prospectively followed for 28 days. Clinical data were collected and varicella exposure was recorded. Admission serum levels of TNF-a, cortisol and VZV-IgG were measured. Blood and saliva samples were collected for VZV-DNA detection via real-time PCR. As a comparison, the detection of HSV-DNA was also examined. Healthy children matched for age and varicella exposure type (infection or vaccination) were also included. VZV reactivation was observed in 17% (7/39) of children. Children with VZV reactivation had extended duration of fever (OR = 1.17; 95% CI, 1.02–1.34). None of the varicella-vaccinated children or healthy controls had detectable VZV-DNA in any blood or saliva samples examined. HSV-DNA was detected in saliva from 33% of ICU children and 2.6% of healthy controls. Among children with viral reactivation, typing revealed wild-type VZV and HSV-1. In conclusion, VZV reactivation occurs in immunocompetent children under severe stress and is associated with prolonged duration of fever

    Adherence to the screening program for HBV infection in pregnant women delivering in Greece

    BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B infection (HBV) is a major Public Health Problem. Perinatal transmission can be prevented with the identification of HBsAg(+) women and administration of immunoprophylaxis to their newborns. A national prevention programme for HBV with universal screening of pregnant women and vaccination of infants is in effect since 1998 in Greece. METHODS: To evaluate adherence to the national guidelines, all women delivering in Greece between 17–30/03/03 were included in the study. Trained health professionals completed a questionnaire on demographic data, prenatal or perinatal screening for HBsAg and the implementation of appropriate immunoprophylaxis. RESULTS: During the study period 3,760 women delivered. Prenatal screening for HBsAg was documented in 91.3%. Greek women were more likely to have had prenatal testing. HBsAg prevalence was 2.89% (95%CI 2.3–3.4%). Higher prevalence of HBV-infection was noted in immigrant women, especially those born in Albania (9.8%). Other risk factors associated with maternal HBsAg (+) included young maternal age and absence of prenatal testing. No prenatal or perinatal HBsAg testing was performed in 3.2% women. Delivering in public hospital and illiteracy were identifiable risk factors for never being tested. All newborns of identified HBsAg (+) mothers received appropriate immunoprophylaxis. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HBsAg in Greek pregnant women is low and comparable to other European countries. However, immigrant women composing almost 20% of our childbearing population, have significant higher prevalence rates. There are still women who never get tested. Universal vaccination against HBV at birth and reinforcement of perinatal testing of all women not prenatally tested should be discussed with Public Health Authorities

    Assessment of the direct effects of DDAH I on tumour angiogenesis in vivo

    Nitric oxide (NO) has been strongly implicated in glioma progression and angiogenesis. The endogenous inhibitors of NO synthesis, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and N-monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA), are metabolized by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH), and hence, DDAH is an intracellular factor that regulates NO. However, DDAH may also have an NO-independent action. We aimed to investigate whether DDAH I has any direct role in tumour vascular development and growth independent of its NO-mediated effects, in order to establish the future potential of DDAH inhibition as an anti-angiogenic treatment strategy. A clone of rat C6 glioma cells deficient in NO production expressing a pTet Off regulatable element was identified and engineered to overexpress DDAH I in the absence of doxycycline. Xenografts derived from these cells were propagated in the presence or absence of doxycycline and susceptibility magnetic resonance imaging used to assess functional vasculature in vivo. Pathological correlates of tumour vascular density, maturation and function were also sought. In the absence of doxycycline, tumours exhibited high DDAH I expression and activity, which was suppressed in its presence. However, overexpression of DDAH I had no measurable effect on tumour growth, vessel density, function or maturation. These data suggest that in C6 gliomas DDAH has no NO-independent effects on tumour growth and angiogenesis, and that the therapeutic potential of targeting DDAH in gliomas should only be considered in the context of NO regulation

    Serologic indices of hepatitis B virus infection in military recruits in Greece (2004–2005)

    BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection in Greece has been decreasing over the last decades. However, recent epidemiological data are lacking. METHODS: We studied 1,840 Army recruits from 05/2004 until 10/2005, and performed serological testing for HBsAg, anti-HBsAg, and anti-HBcAg. We also examined their association with several factors, including age, residential area, socioeconomic class, and educational level. RESULTS: Mean age (± SD) of the recruits was 20.5 (± 2.1) years. Antibodies to HBV core antigen [anti-HBcAg (+)] were found in 31 (1.68%) of 1,840 participants. Only 6 (0.32%) were HBsAg (+)/anti-HBsAg (-)/anti-HBcAg (+), while 21 (1.14%) were HBsAg (-)/anti-HBsAg (+)/anti-HBcAg (+), and 4 (0.22%) were HBsAg (-)/anti-HBsAg (-)/anti-HBcAg (+). Overall, 1,144 recruits (62.17%) had antibodies against HBsAg [HBsAg (-)/anti-HBsAg (+)/anti-HBcAg (-)]; 665 recruits (36.14%) had undetectable anti-HBsAg levels. Multivariable analysis showed that younger age (OR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.82–0.92) and advanced educational level (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.32–1.93) were independently associated with serologic evidence suggestive of previous HBV vaccination. CONCLUSION: We document a further decline of the prevalence of chronic HBV infection among Greek military recruits, a fact that may support the effectiveness of the ongoing immunization programme

    New solar axion search in CAST with 4^4He filling

    The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for aγa\to\gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the X-ray refractive mass mγm_\gamma to the axion search mass mam_a. After the vacuum phase (2003--2004), which is optimal for ma0.02m_a\lesssim0.02 eV, we used 4^4He in 2005--2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02--0.39 eV and 3^3He in 2009--2011 to scan from 0.39--1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to 4^4He in 2012 to investigate a narrow mam_a range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39--0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with 4^4He, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to gaγ<1.47×1010GeV1g_{a\gamma}< 1.47\times10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1} (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings.     First results from the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST)

    Hypothetical axion-like particles with a two-photon interaction would be produced in the Sun by the Primakoff process. In a laboratory magnetic field (``axion helioscope'') they would be transformed into X-rays with energies of a few keV. Using a decommissioned LHC test magnet, CAST has been running for about 6 months during 2003. The first results from the analysis of these data are presented here. No signal above background was observed, implying an upper limit to the axion-photon coupling < 1.16 10^{-10} GeV^-1 at 95% CL for m_a <~0.02 eV. This limit is comparable to the limit from stellar energy-loss arguments and considerably more restrictive than any previous experiment in this axion mass range.Comment: 4 pages, accepted by PRL.     Results and perspectives of the solar axion search with the CAST experiment

    The status of the solar axion search with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) will be presented. Recent results obtained by the use of 3^3He as a buffer gas has allowed us to extend our sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with 4^4He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eVma \le m_{a} \le 0.64 eV. From the absence of an excess of x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ2.3×1010_{a\gamma} \le 2.3\times 10^{-10} GeV1^{-1} at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. CAST published results represent the best experimental limit on the photon couplings to axions and other similar exotic particles dubbed WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles) in the considered mass range and for the first time the limit enters the region favored by QCD axion models. Preliminary sensitivities for axion masses up to 1.16 eV will also be shown reaching mean upper limits on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ3.5×1010_{a\gamma} \le 3.5\times 10^{-10} GeV1^{-1} at 95% C.L. Expected sensibilities for the extension of the CAST program up to 2014 will be presented.     Search for chameleons with CAST

    In this work we present a search for (solar) chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). This novel experimental technique, in the field of dark energy research, exploits both the chameleon coupling to matter (βm\beta_{\rm m}) and to photons (βγ\beta_{\gamma}) via the Primakoff effect. By reducing the X-ray detection energy threshold used for axions from 1\,keV to 400\,eV CAST became sensitive to the converted solar chameleon spectrum which peaks around 600\,eV. Even though we have not observed any excess above background, we can provide a 95% C.L. limit for the coupling strength of chameleons to photons of βγ ⁣ ⁣1011\beta_{\gamma}\!\lesssim\!10^{11} for 1<βm<1061<\beta_{\rm m}<10^6.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure
