Gossip consensus algorithms via quantized communication
This paper considers the average consensus problem on a network of digital
links, and proposes a set of algorithms based on pairwise ''gossip''
communications and updates. We study the convergence properties of such
algorithms with the goal of answering two design questions, arising from the
literature: whether the agents should encode their communication by a
deterministic or a randomized quantizer, and whether they should use, and how,
exact information regarding their own states in the update.Comment: Accepted for publicatio
Shape enhancement for rapid prototyping
Many applications, for instance in the reverse engineering and cultural heritage field, require to build a physical replica of 3D digital models. Recent 3D printers can easily perform this task in a relatively short time and using color to reproduce object textures. However, the finite resolution of printers and, most of all, some peculiar optical and physical properties of the used materials reduce their perceptual quality. The contribution of this paper is a shape enhancing technique, which allows users to increase readability of the tiniest details in physical replicas, without requiring manual post-reproduction interventions.831-840Pubblicat

Estimation of lineup efficiency effects in Basketball using play-by-play data
The paper aims at defining a data-driven approach to team management in basketball. A model-based strategy, based on a modification of the adjusted plus-minus approach, is proposed for the analyses of the match progress. The main idea is to define a model based on the 5-man lineups instead of the single players. In this framework, given the large number of possible lineups, the regularization issue is quite relevant. The empirical application is based on the data of the current Italian championship (Serie A1). The play-by-play data are considered along with some information resulting from the game box scores
Distributed averaging on digital erasure networks
International audience; Iterative distributed algorithms are studied for computing arithmetic averages over networks of agents connected through memoryless broadcast erasure channels. These algorithms do not require the agents to have any knowledge about the global network structure or size. Almost sure convergence to state agreement is proved, and the communication and computational complexities of the algorithms are analyzed. Both the number of transmissions and the number of computations performed by each agent of the network are shown to grow not faster than poly-logarithmically in the desired precision. The impact of the graph topology on the algorithms' performance is analyzed as well. Moreover, it is shown how, in the presence of noiseless communication feedback, one can modify the algorithms, significantly improving their performance versus complexity trade-off
Non-classical correlations in non-Markovian continuous variable systems
We consider two identical and non-interacting harmonic oscillators coupled to
either two independent bosonic baths or to a common bosonic bath. Under the
only assumption of weak coupling, we analyze in details the non-Markovian short
time-scale evolution of intensity correlations, entanglement and quantum
discord for initial two-mode squeezed-thermal vacuum states. In the independent
reservoirs case we observe the detrimental effect of the environment for all
these quantities and we establish a hierarchy for their robustness against the
environmental noise. In the common reservoir case, for initial uncorrelated
states, we find that only quantum discord can be created via interaction with
the bath, while entanglement and sub shot noise intensity correlations remain
absent.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
