Performance analysis of a common-rail Diesel engine fuelled with different blends of waste cooking oil and gasoil

An experimental campaign was performed to study the behavior of a common-rail Diesel engine in automotive configuration when it is fuelled with blends of Diesel fuel (DF) and waste cooking oil (WCO). In particular the tested fuels are: B20 blend, composed of 20% WCO and 80% DF; B50, composed of 50% WCO and 50% DF; WCO 100% and 100% DF. In order to fuel the engine with fuel having a similar viscosity, this quantity, together with density, has been meas-ured at temperature ranging from rom to about 80 °C. According to these measurements, before fuelling the engine B20 was heated up to 35 °C and B50 to 75 °C. An in-house software was developed to acquire the data elaborated by the electronic control unit. Results show the trend in torque and global efficiency at different gas pedal position (gpp) and different engine speed. The experiments show that larger discrepancies are measured at smaller gpp values, while at larger ones dif-ferences become smaller. A similar trend is noticed for engine global efficiency

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy in a 14-year-old atopic boy: a case report

Background: Corticosteroids are widely used in medicine. Few cases of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) have been reported following topical corticosteroid administration. We describe the first case of pediatric CSC related to topical corticosteroid administration. Case presentation: A 14-year-old boy presented with decreased vision, pigment epithelial detachments, and serous retinal detachments in the right eye after starting treatment for atopic dermatitis with Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% topical ointment. His condition resolved 2 weeks after discontinuing the steroid and administering Bromfenac 0.9 mg/ml eyedrops. Conclusions: Although the pathogenesis of CSC is poorly understood, ophthalmologists should be informed about the potential link between CSC and topical corticosteroid treatment, and they should be aware that CSC might, albeit infrequently, affect children

Hallermann–Streiff syndrome with severe bilateral enophthalmos and radiological evidence of silent brain syndrome: a new congenital silent brain syndrome?

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: We present the first case of a congenital form of silent brain syndrome (SBS) in a young patient affected by Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) and the surgical management of the associated eyelid anomalies. METHODS: HSS signs were evaluated according to the Francois criteria. Orbital computed tomography (CT) and genetic analysis were performed. An upper eyelid retractor-free recession was performed. Follow-up visits were performed at day 1, weeks 1 and 3, and months 3, 6, 9 (for both eyes), and 12 (for left eye) after surgery. RESULTS: The patient exhibited six of the seven signs of HSS. Orbital CT showed bilateral enophthalmos and upward bowing of the orbital roof with air entrapment under the upper eyelid as previously described for SBS. Genetic analysis showed a 2q polymorphism. During follow-up, the cornea showed absence of epithelial damage and the upper eyelids were lowered symmetrically, with a regular contour. CONCLUSION: Our HSS patient shares features with SBS. We postulate that SBS could include more than one pattern, ie, an acquired form following ventriculoperitoneal shunting and this newly reported congenital form in our HSS patient in whom typical syndromic skull anomalies led to this condition. The surgical treatment has been effective in restoring an appropriate lid level, with good globe apposition and a good cosmetic result

A Prospective Study Evaluating IOP Changes after Switching from a Therapy with Prostaglandin Eye Drops Containing Preservatives to Nonpreserved Tafluprost in Glaucoma Patients

Purpose. To compare the ocular hypotensive effect of tafluprost with prostaglandin analogues (PGAs) in glaucoma patients. Methods. 89 primary open-angle glaucoma patients treated with bimatoprost, latanoprost, or travoprost for at least 3 months complaining for ocular discomfort were switched to tafluprost. IOP was assessed at baseline and 3 months after switching the therapy by daily curve. Primary outcome was to compare the mean daily IOP of tafluprost with PGAs. Results. The mean daily IOP was 16 ± 2.1 and 16.6 ± 2.0 mm Hg at baseline and after switching to tafluprost, respectively (P > 0.05). When analysis was carried out between tafluprost and each previous PGAs, the comparison between latanoprost and tafluprost and travoprost and tafluprost did not show any statistically significant difference in mean daily IOP and at each time point. The comparison between bimatoprost and tafluprost showed a statistically significant difference in mean daily IOP (P < 0.05) and at each time point (P < 0.05). Conclusions. After 3 months of switching tafluprost showed an overall IOP lowering effect similar to others PGAs. When each PGA was compared with tafluprost, bimatoprost showed to provide a statistically significant additional IOP lowering effect

s-CRIq: the online short version of the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire

    Get PDF
Background: The wide use of the term Cognitive Reserve (CR) is in need of a clear and shared definition of its concept and of the development of new tools, quick and easy to use and updated for the people of today. This study describes the online short CRIq (s-CRIq), the new shorter version of the CRIq, following an item analysis revision, and compares the data distribution of different samples. Methods: The s-CRIq was administered online to 435 people while another 440 filled out the s-CRIq in self-administration. A further 588 participants had been administered the original paper-and-pencil long CRIq and 344 the online long CRIq. Results: The major difference in the databases of s-CRIq versus the long versions is an increased score in education and in leisure activity. However, the density distributions of the total score of CRI in the 4 databases share 64% of their areas, and at least two of them share 84%. Conclusion: The s-CRIq proved to be a simple and easy-to-administer tool. Similarly, to the original version, the s-CRIq is freely available on the web, and it is our hope that it will be of fruitful use for researchers and clinicians alike

Septic coxitis after an intramuscular injection in a young adult treated by two-steps total hip arthroplasty: a case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Septic arthritis of the hip is a rare condition in adults and its treatment depends on symptoms duration: early onset of infection can be treated with open or arthroscopic debridement, while more aggressive surgery is required when articular damage takes place such as articular resection or total hip replacement (THA). Presentation of case: We report a case of a 30 year old man affect by septic arthritis of the hip after an intramuscular injection of diclofenac successfully treated with a two-steps THA. Discussion: In literature there aren't many cases of septic arthritis of the hip developed after intramuscular injections. Early onset of infection can be treated with an accurate articular debridement, while chronic conditions are traditionally treated by resection arthroplasty. However resection arhtroplasty gives to the patients a significant leg length discrepancy and, especially in young adults, a two-steps surgery with the implant of THA can lead to good results, as reported in recent case series published. Conclusion: In our experience two-stage total hip arthroplasty proved to be a reliable solution for septic arthritis of the hip and may be used in patient with severe joint damage. Furthermore we want underline importance of correct anamnesis to make quickly the right diagnosis and provide the right treatment of septic arthritis of the hip also in difficult clinical cases
