Genre and comprehension strategies presented in elementary basal reading programs: A content analysis
The goal of this study was to explore the differences in how five basal reading programs present opportunities for students to engage in reading informational text, and to analyze the research-based comprehension strategies manuals suggest teachers use to teach their students. Overall, there was no systematic progression or planned inclusion of genre or comprehension strategies in any of the basal programs examined. Although there was more informational text present in basal readers than expected, narrative was still the dominant genre. In terms of comprehension strategy instruction, Open Court suggests the highest amount of instruction for all grades and genres. Furthermore, while two-thirds of instructional suggestions were allotted to comprehension strategies, several strategies were ignored or received limited attention. Recommendations for basal reading publishers and teacher education programs are provided.</p

Negotiating First Graders' Reading Stance: The Relationship Between Their Efferent and Aesthetic Connections and Their Reading Comprehension
Due to changing demographics, our students are coming into schools with diverse life experiences, which do not always reflect the cultural reality of their schools. Given the research on the importance of using literature that is relevant to the students’ background, this study sought to explore how first grade urban students connect to literature that mirrored their personal experiences, but is not always considered appropriate material for classroom read-alouds. It was also of interest to determine how their reading stance, as measured by the type of connections students made, affected their comprehension of the story read. Results indicated that students who assumed an aesthetic stance while listening to the story, and made connections based on direct or vicarious personal experiences, scored higher on the comprehension measures.

The Application of Computer, Digital, and Telecommunications Technologies to the Clinical Preparation of Teachers
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is becoming common place in the preparation of teachers. This chapter will focus on the application of CMC and will provide insight on how technology can be used in P-12 classrooms and potentially impact student learning. The purpose of the chapter is to: (a) describe the development, implementation, outcomes, and sustainability of a pre-service teacher (PST) supervision model arranged around digital technology and telecommunications, providing supervision and support for PSTs engaged in a student teaching internship, and (b) to discuss how the technology utilized may later be utilized by participating PSTs in their future classrooms (specifically videoconferencing, instant messaging, video sharing, and the critical analysis and reflection of current practices). The authors created a virtual-geographical third space in the form of a Teaching Lab that was mediated with a multimedia platform and designed around the principle of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The authors also provided opportunities for PSTs to interact within that space for reflection and the sharing of best practices.https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_facbooks/1001/thumbnail.jp
The timing and circadian rhythm of pain: new concepts for timely and opportune nursing care
Relief of chronic or acute pain requires patient good management. Chronic pain interferes with the quality of life of patients and those around the patient. In addition, it can affect physical and mental health and family and social relationships. Nevertheless, little is known about the behavior of its intensity during the day, its association with certain specific diseases or its response to pharmacological treatment. This aim of this paper is to improve the efficiency of necessary drugs, to diminish their dosages, and to establish
the best treatment schedules. For nursing personnel, who are the key in integral management of patients suffering pain because they are the links between doctors and patients, understanding variations in the intensity of pain throughout the day must be a priority in order to program accurate analgesic
treatment schedule.Incluye referencias bibliográfica
