Effects of a School-Based Education Intervention on BMI and Physical Activity

In 2011, the CDC reported that there are 12.5 million obese children and adolescents living in the United States (U.S.). The financial burden of childhood obesity in the U.S. is estimated to be 14 billion dollars. The objective of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to answer the question: In school-aged children, how does school-based, structured, family-oriented physical activity education affect body mass index (BMI) compared to usual education over an eight week time period? The Stetler Model of EBP and the health belief model were used to guide this project in a rural, Northwest Indiana elementary school. For eight weeks, fourth and fifth grade students received an additional 30 minutes of classroom education per week about the importance of physical activity and suggestions for increasing daily physical activity using the“Wellness, Academics, and You” (WAY) program as well as other evidence-based materials. Students also participated in brief exercises led by the project facilitator in the classroom each week. Pre- and post-intervention BMIs were measured and compared. BMI data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Although no statistically significant differences in BMI were found (p=0.936), 18.02% (n=20) students lost more than one pound over the eight-week intervention period and 8.12% (n=9) students lost four pounds or more. Future projects with similar objectives to this EBP project may benefit from a longer intervention period

Neuropsychologische Aspekte bei PatientInnen mit Morbus Parkinson

ABSTRACT Theoretischer Hintergrund Morbus Parkinson ist eine progressive, neurogenerative Erkrankung (Vale, 2008).

Background: Cancer is among the leading causes of mortality in India. Studies have reported antineoplastic agents as the common class of drugs causing Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). The present study aimed to conduct active surveillance of ADRs of anticancer drugs in the hematology department. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in 136 patients with cancer and the incidence and frequency of ADRs were assessed. The study was conducted in 6 months in a multispecialty hospital. Results: Among 136 cancer patients, All was more prevalent (39.70%); CLL, Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma were less prevalent (0.73%). ADRs were more prevalent in the Pediatrics department, i.e., 18.53% of ADRs were observed in patients aged <10 years. ADRs in male patients constituted 54.39%, whereas it was 45.60% in female patients. Cytarabine caused the highest number of ADRs (34.48%). The most prevalent ADR was anemia (25.60%).Conclusion: Multiple ADRs were detected in cancer patients. We found that hematological ADRs were more prevalent. Most of the ADRs were possible reactions according to Naranjo and the World Health Organization (WHO) scales

Antioxidants are used in the empirical treatment of infertile men. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of antioxidant therapy on conventional semen parameters and advanced sperm function tests in men seeking fertility treatment. A total of 148 infertile men of unknown etiology were divided into idiopathic (n = 119) and unexplained male infertility (UMI; n = 29). All participants were treated with the antioxidant supplement 'FH PRO for Men' for a period of three months. Compared with pretreatment results, there was a significant improvement in conventional semen parameters including sperm concentration, total and progressive motility and normal morphology, and seminal oxidation reduction potential (ORP), and sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in idiopathic infertile men. The changes were more prominent in idiopathic infertile men positive for ORP and SDF. UMI patients showed an improvement in progressive motility, ORP, and SDF after antioxidant treatment. Statistical analysis revealed that the efficacy of FH PRO for Men was significant in idiopathic male infertility compared with UMI. Treatment of idiopathic male infertility patients with the FH PRO for Men antioxidant regimen for three months resulted in a significant improvement in conventional semen parameters and sperm function. Therefore, FH PRO for Men offers promise for the medical treatment of idiopathic male infertility
