    A low noise 410-495 heterodyne two tuner mixer, using submicron Nb/Al2O3/Nb tunneljunctions

    A 410-495 GHz heterodyne receiver, with an array of two Nb/Al2O3/Nb tunneljunctions as mixing element is described. The noise temperature of this receiver is below 230 K (DSB) over the whole frequency range, and has lowest values of 160 K in the 435-460 GHz range. The calculated DSB mixergain over the whole frequency range varies from -11.9 plus or minus 0.6 dB to -12.6 plus or minus 0.6 dB and the mixer noise is 90 plus or minus 30 K

    Superconducting resonator circuits at frequencies above the gap frequency

    The frequency response of three superconductive niobium resonating circuits, formed by a Nb microstrip and a Nb tunnel junction, is measured and analyzed at frequencies above the superconducting gap frequency. The circuits are placed in a waveguide system and the frequency response is determined with a Fourier transform spectrometer. The calculated and measured resonance frequencies and bandwidths are in good agreement with the extreme anomalous limit of the Mattis–Bardeen theory on the anomalous skin effect in superconductors [D.C. Mattis and J. Bardeen, Phys. Rev. 111, 412 (1958)]. The observed loss is higher than predicted by this theory, in agreement with previous observations on Nb films. The use of other materials for striplines as tuning circuits for heterodyne superconducting tunnel junction mixers is analyzed

    The ac‐Josephson effect above the gap frequency

    The rf‐power dependence of the ac‐Josephson steps is measured at 720 GHz, using small area Nb tunnel junctions. This frequency is well above the gap frequency of Nb. The junction is placed in a waveguide, and connected to a superconducting stripline, which effectively tunes out the junction capacitance and facilitates the coupling of the radiation to the junction. We observe three Josephson steps, and the first step crosses the zero current axis over a considerable range of rf‐power. This indicates the possible application of THz Josephson steps in voltage standards. The data are compared to the theory and we find clear evidence for the predicted intrinsic roll‐off of the Josephson current amplitude above the gap frequency

    he 1996 American Heart Association consensus panel recommendations stated that pre-participation cardiovascular screening for young competitive athletes is justifiable and compelling on ethical, legal, and medical grounds. The present article represents the consensus statement of the Study Group on Sports Cardiology of the Working Group on Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Physiology and the Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial diseases of the European Society of Cardiology, which comprises cardiovascular specialists and other physicians from different European countries with extensive clinical experience with young competitive athletes, as well as with pathological substrates of sudden death. The document takes note of the 25-year Italian experience on systematic pre-participation screening of competitive athletes and focuses on relevant issues, mostly regarding the relative risk, causes, and prevalence of sudden death in athletes; the efficacy, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of population-based pre-participation cardiovascular screening; the key role of 12-lead ECG for identification of cardiovascular diseases such as cardiomyopathies and channelopathies at risk of sudden death during sports; and the potential of preventing fatal events. The main purpose of the consensus document is to reinforce the principle of the need for pre-participation medical clearance of all young athletes involved in organized sports programmes, on the basis of (i) the proven efficacy of systematic screening by 12-lead ECG (in addition to history and physical examination) to identify hypertrophic cardiomyopathy-the leading cause of sports-related sudden death-and to prevent athletic field fatalities; (ii) the potential screening ability in detecting other lethal cardiovascular diseases presenting with ECG abnormalities. The consensus document recommends the implementation of a common European screening protocol essentially based on 12-lead ECG

    Heterodyne mixing with Nb tunnel junctions above the gap frequency

    The noise and gain of a heterodyne waveguide mixer employing Nb/Al2O3/Nb superconducting tunnel junctions with an on-chip integrated tuning element are measured and analyzed at 680-750 GHz and at 840 GHz. The lowest receiver noise temperatures are 400 K (double side band) at 720 GHz and 1500 K (3000 K including the beam splitter loss) at 840 GHz. We compare data of the pumped I-V curves with the quantum theory of mixing and demonstrate good agreement at frequencies well above the gap frequency
