Pairs of Noncrossing Free Dyck Paths and Noncrossing Partitions
Using the bijection between partitions and vacillating tableaux, we establish
a correspondence between pairs of noncrossing free Dyck paths of length
and noncrossing partitions of with blocks. In terms of the
number of up steps at odd positions, we find a characterization of Dyck paths
constructed from pairs of noncrossing free Dyck paths by using the Labelle

Effects of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza on 14C and 15N distribution in nodulated fababeans
Includes bibliographical references (pages 249-250).A two-compartment growth chamber in which the aboveground plant materials were exposed to 14CO2 and the belowground portion was exposed to 15N2 under normal atmospheric pressure was designed for carbon and nitrogen transfer studies. Vicia faba infected with vesicular-arbuscular fungus Glomus mossae and non-mycorrhizal plants fixed similar quantities of N2 at an age of 6½ wk. Approximately 0.10 mg N was fixed ∙ g−1 dry plant materials ∙ day−1 and 40 mg C • g−1 dry matter day−1 were synthesized by mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal fababeans during 48 h exposure to 14CO2 at 6½ wk with no apparent difference in yield of dry matter. The non-mycorrhizal plants transferred 37% of the fixed 14C beneath ground. The mycorrhizal ones transferred 47% of the fixed 14C beneath ground. Most of the difference could be accounted for in the belowground respiration. The 14CO2 produced by root-microbial systems of the mycorrhizal fababeans was twice as great as that of the nonmycorrhizal; both contained active rhizobium
Investigation of Settlements of a Trunk Road Embankment in Hong Kong
A 25 m high fill embankment was constructed as part of a Trunk Road scheme in Hong Kong. In June 1985, large settlements of the order of 250 mm were observed in the embankment. This was followed by a local slippage of surface material from the downstream slope face. To meet the schedule for opening the trunk road in late September, a number of emergency measures costing about HK0.13 M) were implemented to stabilize the embankment. An investigation was subsequently carried out to assess the cause of the movement and the long term stability of the embankment. This paper summarizes the sequence of events leading to the settlements and outlines the investigation carried out. The proposed hydrocompaction mechanism and the effects of grouting on the embankment are discussed
A Trouble with Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz Gravity
We study the structure of the phase space in Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz theory. With
the constraints derived from the action, the phase space is described by five
fields, thus there is a lack of canonical structure. The Poisson brackets of
the Hamiltonian density do not form a closed structure, resulting in many new
constraints. Taking these new constraints into account, it appears that there
is no degree of freedom left, or the phase space is reduced to one with an odd

Testing and demonstration of model predictive control applied to a radiant slab cooling system in a building test facility
Radiant slab systems have the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings. However, control of radiant slab systems is challenging. Classical feedback control is inadequate due to the large thermal inertia of the systems and heuristic feed-forward control often leads to unacceptable indoor comfort and may not achieve the full energy savings potential. Model predictive control (MPC) is now attracting increasing interest in the building industry and holds promise for radiant systems. However, an often-cited barrier to its implementation in the building industry is the high computational cost and complexity relative to the feedback controls used in conventional systems. The objectives of this study were to (i) verify the correct operation of an open source MPC toolchain developed for radiant slab systems, and (ii) demonstrate its efficacy in a test facility. A matched pair of cells in the FLEXLAB building test facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was used in the study. The proposed MPC toolchain was implemented in one cell and the performance compared to that of the other cell, which used a conventional heuristic control strategy. The results showed that the simplified MPC approach applied in the toolchain worked as expected and realized energy savings over the conventional control strategy. The MPC yielded 42% chilled water pump power reduction and 16% cooling thermal energy savings, while maintaining equal or better indoor comfort
QCD Factorization of Quasi Generalized Gluon Distributions
We study the factorization relations between quasi gluon GPDs and twist-2
GPDs. The perturbative coefficient functions are obtained at one-loop level.
They are free from any collinear- or I.R. divergences. Unlike the case of the
factorization of quasi quark GPDs at one-loop, we have to add ghost
contributions for the factorization of quasi gluon GPDs in order to obtain
gauge-invariant results. In general, operators will be mixed beyond tree-level.
Our work shows that the mixing pattern of the nonlocal operators in quasi gluon
GPDs is the same as local operators, i.e., the nonlocal operators considered
are mixed with gauge-invariant operators, BRST-variation operators and
operators involving EOM operator. The factorization relations are obtained for
all quasi gluon GPDs. Taking the forward limit, we also obtain the relations
