    Are spectroscopic factors from transfer reactions consistent with asymptotic normalisation coefficients?

    It is extremely important to devise a reliable method to extract spectroscopic factors from transfer cross sections. We analyse the standard DWBA procedure and combine it with the asymptotic normalisation coefficient, extracted from an independent data set. We find that the single particle parameters used in the past generate inconsistent asymptotic normalization coefficients. In order to obtain a consistent spectroscopic factor, non-standard parameters for the single particle overlap functions can be used but, as a consequence, often reduced spectroscopic strengths emerge. Different choices of optical potentials and higher order effects in the reaction model are also studied. Our test cases consist of: 14^{14}C(d,p)15^{15}C(g.s.) at Edlab=14E_d^{lab}=14 MeV, 16^{16}O(d,p)17^{17}O(g.s.) at Edlab=15E_d^{lab}=15 MeV and 40^{40}Ca(d,p)41^{41}Ca(g.s.) at Edlab=11E_d^{lab}=11 MeV.     Normal families and fixed points of iterates

    Let F be a family of holomorphic functions and let K be a constant less than 4. Suppose that for all f in F the second iterate of f does not have fixed points for which the modulus of the multiplier is greater than K. We show that then F is normal.     Structure of a model TiO2 photocatalytic interface

    The interaction of water with TiO2 is crucial to many of its practical applications, including photocatalytic water splitting. Following the first demonstration of this phenomenon 40 years ago there have been numerous studies of the rutile single-crystal TiO2(110) interface with water. This has provided an atomic-level understanding of the water-TiO2 interaction. However, nearly all of the previous studies of water/TiO2 interfaces involve water in the vapour phase. Here, we explore the interfacial structure between liquid water and a rutile TiO2(110) surface pre-characterized at the atomic level. Scanning tunnelling microscopy and surface X-ray diffraction are used to determine the structure, which is comprised of an ordered array of hydroxyl molecules with molecular water in the second layer. Static and dynamic density functional theory calculations suggest that a possible mechanism for formation of the hydroxyl overlayer involves the mixed adsorption of O2 and H2O on a partially defected surface. The quantitative structural properties derived here provide a basis with which to explore the atomistic properties and hence mechanisms involved in TiO2 photocatalysis

    Analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions

    We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black holes for generic z. One of these higher-dimensional families contains as critical limits the z=3 three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole and a new z=6 four-dimensional black hole. The variety of analytic solutions presented here encourages to explore these gravity models within the context of non-relativistic holographic correspondence.Comment: 14 page

    Modeling Cluster Production at the AGS

    Deuteron coalescence, during relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, is carried out in a model incorporating a minimal quantal treatment of the formation of the cluster from its individual nucleons by evaluating the overlap of intial cascading nucleon wave packets with the final deuteron wave function. In one approach the nucleon and deuteron center of mass wave packet sizes are estimated dynamically for each coalescing pair using its past light-cone history in the underlying cascade, a procedure which yields a parameter free determination of the cluster yield. A modified version employing a global estimate of the deuteron formation probability, is identical to a general implementation of the Wigner function formalism but can differ from the most frequent realisation of the latter. Comparison is made both with the extensive existing E802 data for Si+Au at 14.6 GeV/c and with the Wigner formalism. A globally consistent picture of the Si+Au measurements is achieved. In light of the deuteron's evident fragility, information obtained from this analysis may be useful in establishing freeze-out volumes and help in heralding the presence of high-density phenomena in a baryon-rich environment.Comment: 31 pages REVTeX, 19 figures (4 oversized included as JPEG).
