    Line-integral representations for the elastic displacements, stresses and interaction energy of arbitrary dislocation loops in transversely isotropic bimaterials

    AbstractThe elastic displacements, stresses and interaction energy of arbitrarily shaped dislocation loops with general Burgers vectors in transversely isotropic bimaterials (i.e. joined half-spaces) are expressed in terms of simple line integrals for the first time. These expressions are very similar to their isotropic full-space counterparts in the literature and can be easily incorporated into three-dimensional (3D) dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations for hexagonal crystals with interfaces/surfaces. All possible degenerate cases, e.g. isotropic bimaterials and isotropic half-space, are considered in detail. The singularities intrinsic to the classical continuum theory of dislocations are removed by spreading the Burgers vector anisotropically around every point on the dislocation line according to three particular spreading functions. This non-singular treatment guarantees the equivalence among different versions of the energy formulae and their consistency with the stress formula presented in this paper. Several numerical examples are provided as verification of the derived dislocation solutions, which further show significant influence of material anisotropy and bimaterial interface on the elastic fields and interaction energy of dislocation loops

    AbstractTransversely isotropic materials or hexagonal crystals are commonly utilized in various engineering fields; however, dislocation solutions for such special materials have not been fully developed. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on this important topic, where only Volterra dislocations of the translational type are considered. Based on the potential theory of linear elasticity, we extend the well-known Burgers displacement equation for an arbitrarily shaped dislocation loop in an isotropic elastic full space to the transversely isotropic case. Both the induced displacements and stresses are expressed uniformly in terms of simple and explicit line integrals along the dislocation loop. We introduce three quasi solid angles to describe the displacement discontinuities over the dislocation surface and extract a simple step function out of these angles to characterize the dependence of the displacements on the configuration of the dislocation surface. We also give a new explicit formula for calculating accurately and efficiently the traditional solid angle of an arbitrary polygonal dislocation loop. From the present line-integral representations, exact closed-form solutions in terms of elementary functions are further obtained in a unified way for the displacement and stress fields due to a straight dislocation segment of arbitrary orientation. The non-uniqueness of the elastic field solution due to an open dislocation segment is rigorously discussed and demonstrated. For a circular dislocation loop parallel to the plane of isotropy, a new explicit expression of the induced elastic field is presented in terms of complete elliptic integrals. Several numerical examples are also provided as illustration and verification of the derived dislocation solutions, which further show the importance of material anisotropy on the dislocation-induced elastic field, and reveal the non-uniqueness feature of the elastic field due to a straight dislocation segment

    Isospin influences on particle emission and critical phenomenon in nuclear dissociation

    Features of particle emission and critical point behavior are investigated as functions of the isospin of disassembling sources and temperature at a moderate freeze-out density for medium-size Xe isotopes in the framework of isospin dependent lattice gas model. Multiplicities of emitted light particles, isotopic and isobaric ratios of light particles show the strong dependence on the isospin of the dissociation source, but double ratios of light isotope pairs and the critical temperature determined by the extreme values of some critical observables are insensitive to the isospin of the systems. Values of the power law parameter of cluster mass distribution, mean multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (IMFIMF), information entropy (HH) and Campi's second moment (S2S_2) also show a minor dependence on the isospin of Xe isotopes at the critical point. In addition, the slopes of the average multiplicites of the neutrons (NnN_n), protons (NpN_p), charged particles (NCPN_{CP}), and IMFs (NimfN_{imf}), slopes of the largest fragment mass number (AmaxA_{max}), and the excitation energy per nucleon of the disassembling source (E∗/AE^*/A) to temperature are investigated as well as variances of the distributions of NnN_n, NpN_p, NCPN_{CP}, NIMFN_{IMF}, AmaxA_{max} and E∗/AE^*/A.     Probing quark gluon plasma with jets

    We study multiple scatterings of jets on constituents of quark gluon plasma and introduce energy--energy correlations to quantify their effects. The effects from a longitudinally expanding plasma on medium as well as high energy jets are found to be significant at both RHIC and LHC energies. Because jets escape from the plasma long before the completion of mixed phase, these effects are free from complications of final state hadronic interactions and decays. These suggest that jets can be used to probe the plasma that might be created in future high energy heavy ion collisions.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures in 5 ps files included, McGill/94-1

    Quantifying atmospheric nitrogen deposition through a nationwide monitoring network across China

    A Nationwide Nitrogen Deposition Monitoring Network (NNDMN) containing 43 monitoring sites was established in China to measure gaseous NH3, NO2, and HNO3 and particulate NH4+ and NO3− in air and/or precipitation from 2010 to 2014. Wet/bulk deposition fluxes of Nr species were collected by precipitation gauge method and measured by continuous-flow analyzer; dry deposition fluxes were estimated using airborne concentration measurements and inferential models. Our observations reveal large spatial variations of atmospheric Nr concentrations and dry and wet/bulk Nr deposition. On a national basis, the annual average concentrations (1.3–47.0 μg N m−3) and dry plus wet/bulk deposition fluxes (2.9–83.3 kg N ha−1 yr−1) of inorganic Nr species are ranked by land use as urban > rural > background sites and by regions as north China > southeast China > southwest China > northeast China > northwest China > Tibetan Plateau, reflecting the impact of anthropogenic Nr emission. Average dry and wet/bulk N deposition fluxes were 20.6 ± 11.2 (mean ± standard deviation) and 19.3 ± 9.2 kg N ha−1 yr−1 across China, with reduced N deposition dominating both dry and wet/bulk deposition. Our results suggest atmospheric dry N deposition is equally important to wet/bulk N deposition at the national scale. Therefore, both deposition forms should be included when considering the impacts of N deposition on environment and ecosystem health

    Knowledge network modelling to support decision-making for strategic intervention in IT project-oriented change management

It proposes a model of change management knowledge networks (CMKNM) to support decision by tackling three existing issues: insufficient knowledge traceability based on the relationships between knowledge elements and key factors, lack of procedural knowledge to provide adequate policies to guide changes, and lack of ‘lessons learned’ documentation in knowledge bases. A qualitative method was used to investigate issues surrounding knowledge mobilisation and knowledge networks. Empirical study was undertaken with industries to test the CMKNM. Results are presented from the empirical study on the key factors influencing knowledge mobilisation in IT project-oriented change management, knowledge networks and connections. The CMKNM model allows key knowledge mobilisation factors to be aligned with each other; it also defines the connections between knowledge networks allowing knowledge to be mobilised by tracing knowledge channels to support decision.Peer reviewe

    Effect of event selection on jetlike correlation measurement in d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV

    AbstractDihadron correlations are analyzed in sNN=200 GeV d+Au collisions classified by forward charged particle multiplicity and zero-degree neutral energy in the Au-beam direction. It is found that the jetlike correlated yield increases with the event multiplicity. After taking into account this dependence, the non-jet contribution on the away side is minimal, leaving little room for a back-to-back ridge in these collisions

    J/ψ polarization in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV in STAR

    AbstractWe report on a polarization measurement of inclusive J/ψ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2<pT<6 GeV/c in p+p collisions at s=200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The J/ψ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the J/ψ production mechanism since they predict different pT dependences of the J/ψ polarization. In this analysis, J/ψ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter λθ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high pT, indicating more longitudinal J/ψ polarization as pT increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models

    Beam-energy Dependence Of Charge Balance Functions From Au + Au Collisions At Energies Available At The Bnl Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

    Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Balance functions have been measured in terms of relative pseudorapidity (Δη) for charged particle pairs at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider from Au + Au collisions at sNN=7.7GeV to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. These results are compared with balance functions measured at the CERN Large Hadron Collider from Pb + Pb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The width of the balance function decreases as the collisions become more central and as the beam energy is increased. In contrast, the widths of the balance functions calculated using shuffled events show little dependence on centrality or beam energy and are larger than the observed widths. Balance function widths calculated using events generated by UrQMD are wider than the measured widths in central collisions and show little centrality dependence. The measured widths of the balance functions in central collisions are consistent with the delayed hadronization of a deconfined quark gluon plasma (QGP).     Dielectron Azimuthal Anisotropy At Mid-rapidity In Au+au Collisions At Snn =200 Gev

    We report on the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy (v2) of dielectrons (e+e- pairs) at mid-rapidity from sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions with the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), presented as a function of transverse momentum (pT) for different invariant-mass regions. In the mass region Mee<1.1 GeV/c2 the dielectron v2 measurements are found to be consistent with expectations from π0,η,ω, and φ decay contributions. In the mass region 1.1<Mee<2.9GeV/c2, the measured dielectron v2 is consistent, within experimental uncertainties, with that from the cc¯ contributions.906Adams, J., (2005) Nucl. Phys.
