Metallic aluminum suboxides with ultra-high electrical conductivity at high pressure
Aluminum, as the most abundant metallic elemental content in the Earth’s crust, usually exists in the form of alumina (Al2O3). However, the oxidation state of aluminum and the crystal structures of aluminum oxides in the pressure range of planetary interiors is not well established. Here, we predicted two aluminum suboxides (Al2O, AlO) and two superoxides (Al4O7, AlO3) with uncommon stoichiometries at high pressures using first-principles calculations and crystal structure prediction methods. We find that the P4/nmm Al2O becomes stable above ~765 GPa, and may survive in the deep mantles or cores of giant planets such as Neptune. Interestingly, the Al2O and AlO are metallic and have electride features, in which some electrons are localized in the interstitials between atoms. We find that Al2O has an electrical conductivity one order of magnitude higher than that of iron under the same pressure-temperature conditions, which may influence the total conductivity of giant planets. Our findings enrich the high-pressure phase diagram of aluminum oxides and improve our understanding of the interior structure of giant planets

Retina Vascular Structures near the Optic Disc and in the Macula in Primary Angle-Closure Suspects
Introduction: The main aim of this article was to study the retinal peripapillary and macular vascular structures in eyes with primary angle-closure suspects (PACS) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, control and PACS subjects were recruited from a community screening. Only one eye per subject was used for analysis. All participants underwent a questionnaire survey, physical and ophthalmic examinations, ocular biometry measurements, and OCTA. We compared basic demographics and vessel structure parameters between control and PACS eyes. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to investigate factors associated with vascular parameters in both groups. Results: Data from 254 subjects including 155 PACS and 99 controls were analyzed. In the peripapillary region, PACS eyes showed similar retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and vessel densities (VDs) including and excluding large vessels compared to control eyes. Compared to control eyes, all macular OCTA parameters showed significant differences in PACS eyes, including decreased superficial VD (p = 0.006) and deep VD (p = 0.004), larger fovea avascular zone (FAZ) area (p = 0.006), and longer FAZ perimeter (p = 0.004). Gender (p = 0.039), age (p < 0.001), and Garway-Heath superior hemisphere RNFL (p < 0.001) were risk factors influencing optic disc VD excluding large vessels. Axial length was the major factor affecting macula superficial and deep VDs (p = 0.004 and 0.001 respectively), while PACS was an independent factor associated with larger FAZ perimeter (p = 0.046). Conclusion: While PACS and control eyes have comparable RNFL and vascular structure around the optic nerve head, macular vascular structures are significantly different
Diversified sources for human infections by Salmonella enterica serovar newport
Salmonella enterica Newport (S. Newport), with phylogenetic diversity feature, contributes to significant public health concerns. Our previous study suggested that S. Newport from multiple animal-borne routes, with distinct antibiotic resistant pattern, might transmit to human. However, their genetic information was lacking. As a complement to the earlier finding, we investigate the relationship between each other among the hosts, sources, genotype and antibiotic resistance in S. Newport. We used the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) in conjunction with minimum inhibitory concentration of 16 antibiotics of globally sampled 1842 S. Newport strains, including 282 newly contributed Chinese strains, to evaluate this association. Our analysis reveals that sequence types (STs) are significantly associated with different host sources, including livestock (ST45), birds (ST5), contaminated water and soil (ST118), reptiles (ST46) and seafood (ST31). Importantly, ST45 contained most of (344/553) the multi-drug resistance (MDR) strains, which were believed to be responsible for human MDR bacterial infections. Chinese isolates were detected to form two unique lineages of avian (ST808 group) and freshwater animal (ST2364 group) origin. Taken together, genotyping information of S. Newport could serve to improve Salmonella source-originated diagnostics and guide better selection of antibiotic therapy against Salmonella infections
