    Behaviour of axially loaded structural bolting assemblies in fire

    Bolt assemblies used in structural connections may fail in tension via two modes: Necking, which is a ductile failure, and thread stripping, which is a brittle failure mechanism. During a fire, a ductile failure mode is preferable as it provides continued load transfer from beams to columns for the longest amount of time, allowing for building evacuation. Bolt assemblies have been tested under tension at a range of strain rates and temperatures to observe both failure modes. Tests showed that those bolts with a non-martensitic microstructure failed in a beneficial ductile manner, contrary to the current standards

    Diagnostic performance of urinary metanephrines for the postmortem diagnosis of hypothermia

    The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic potential of urinary metanephrines and 3-methoxytyramine compared to urinary catecholamine determination in diagnosing antemortem cold exposure and fatal hypothermia. 83 cases of fatal hypothermia and 144 control cases were included in this study. Catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine), metanephrines (metanephrine, normetanephrine) and 3-methoxytyramine were measured in urine collected during autopsy. All tested analytes were significantly higher in hypothermia cases compared to control subjects and displayed a generally satisfying discriminative value, thus indicating urinary catecholamines and their metabolites as reliable markers of cold-related stress and hypothermia related-deaths. Metanephrine and adrenaline had the best discriminative value between hypothermia and control cases compared to other tested analytes, though with different sensitivity and specificity. These can therefore be considered the most suitable markers of cold-related stress

    Characterisation of strain-induced precipitation behaviour in microalloyed steels during thermomechanical controlled processing

    The temperature at which thermomechanical controlled processing is undertaken strongly influences strain-induced precipitation (SIP) in microalloyed steels. In this study, the recrystallisation-precipitation-time-temperature curve was simulated to determine the full recrystallisation temperature, recrystallisation-stop temperature and the temperature where precipitation would occur at the shortest time. The calculated temperatures were verified by experimental testing for rolling between 1100 °C and 850 °C. On the basis of this a finishing deformation of 850 °C was chosen in order to maximise the precipitate number density formed in a fully unrecrystallised austenite. The orientation relationship between the SIP in austenite, and subsequent transformation to ferrite was identified by calculation from the coordinate transformation matrix, and by electron diffraction in the transmission electron microscope. The NbC formed as coherent/semi-coherent precipitates in the austenite, and remained coherent/semi-coherent in the ferrite, indicating a Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship between the austenite and ferrite on transformation

    A case of suicide by self-injection of adrenaline

    Adrenaline (epinephrine) auto-injectors provide life-saving pre-hospital treatment for individuals experiencing anaphylaxis in a community setting. Errors in handling adrenaline auto-injectors, particularly by children and healthcare professionals, have been reported. Reports of adrenaline overdoses are limited in the medical literature. In most of these cases, accidental adrenaline administration results from medical error. Exogenous administration of catecholamine is responsible for cardiovascular and metabolic responses, which may cause supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular dysrhythmias and myocardial ischemia. The authors present a unique autopsy case involving a 34year-old woman who intentionally self-injected adrenaline using an adrenaline auto-injector as part of a suicide plan. Catecholamines and metanephrines were measured in peripheral and cardiac blood as well as urine and vitreous humor. Based on the results of all postmortem investigations, the cause of death was determined to be cardiac dysrhythmia and cardiac arrest following adrenaline self-injection
