A Catalog of MIPSGAL Disk and Ring Sources

    Get PDF
We present a catalog of 416 extended, resolved, disk- and ring-like objects as detected in the MIPSGAL 24 micron survey of the Galactic plane. This catalog is the result of a search in the MIPSGAL image data for generally circularly symmetric, extended "bubbles" without prior knowledge or expectation of their physical nature. Most of the objects have no extended counterpart at 8 or 70 micron, with less than 20% detections at each wavelength. For the 54 objects with central point sources, the sources are nearly always seen in all IRAC bands. About 70 objects (16%) have been previously identified, with another 35 listed as IRAS sources. Among the identified objects, those with central sources are mostly listed as emission-line stars, but with other source types including supernova remnants, luminous blue variables, and planetary nebulae. The 57 identified objects (of 362) without central sources are nearly all PNe (~90%).which suggests that a large fraction of the 300+ unidentified objects in this category are also PNe. These identifications suggest that this is primarily a catalog of evolved stars. Also included in the catalog are two filamentary objects that are almost certainly SNRs, and ten unusual compact extended objects discovered in the search. Two of these show remarkable spiral structure at both 8 and 24 micron. These are likely background galaxies previously hidden by the intervening Galactic plane

Analysis and Comparison of Transonic Buffet Phenomenon over Several Three-Dimensional Wings

    Get PDF
International audienceThe transonic buffet is a complex aerodynamic instability that appears on wings and airfoils at a high subsonic Mach number and/or angle of attack. It consists of a shock oscillation that induces pressure and notably lift fluctuations, thus limiting the flight envelope of civil aircraft. The aim of the present Paper is to improve the understanding of the flow physics of the three-dimensional transonic buffet over swept wings through the analysis and comparison of four different experimental databases. In particular, the objective is to identify characteristic values of the phenomenon such as Strouhal numbers, convection velocities, buffet onset, etc. It is shown that some dimensionless numbers are kept constant among the different databases and consequently can be considered as characteristics, whereas others change. The key factors in the understanding of the three-dimensional transonic buffet phenomenon lie in explaining common features but also the variability of transonic buffet characteristics in different configurations. In particular, it is shown that three-dimensional buffet is characterized by a Strouhal number in the range 0.2–0.3 and a spanwise convection velocity of 0.245 0.015 U∞, where U∞ denotes the freestream velocity. These characteristic ranges of frequencies are larger than those of the two-dimensional buffet phenomenon, which suggests different physical mechanisms

New radio observations of anomalous microwave emission in the HII region RCW175

We have observed the HII region RCW175 with the 64m Parkes telescope at 8.4GHz and 13.5GHz in total intensity, and at 21.5GHz in both total intensity and polarization. High angular resolution, high sensitivity, and polarization capability enable us to perform a detailed study of the different constituents of the HII region. For the first time, we resolve three distinct regions at microwave frequencies, two of which are part of the same annular diffuse structure. Our observations enable us to confirm the presence of anomalous microwave emission (AME) from RCW175. Fitting the integrated flux density across the entire region with the currently available spinning dust models, using physically motivated assumptions, indicates the presence of at least two spinning dust components: a warm component with a relatively large hydrogen number density n_H=26.3/cm^3 and a cold component with a hydrogen number density of n_H=150/cm^3. The present study is an example highlighting the potential of using high angular-resolution microwave data to break model parameter degeneracies. Thanks to our spectral coverage and angular resolution, we have been able to derive one of the first AME maps, at 13.5GHz, showing clear evidence that the bulk of the AME arises in particular from one of the source components, with some additional contribution from the diffuse structure. A cross-correlation analysis with thermal dust emission has shown a high degree of correlation with one of the regions within RCW175. In the center of RCW175, we find an average polarized emission at 21.5GHz of 2.2\pm0.2(rand.)\pm0.3(sys.)% of the total emission, where we have included both systematic and statistical uncertainties at 68% CL. This polarized emission could be due to sub-dominant synchrotron emission from the region and is thus consistent with very faint or non-polarized emission associated with AME.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

Inter-foetus Membrane Segmentation for TTTS Using Adversarial Networks

    Get PDF
Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome is commonly treated with minimally invasive laser surgery in fetoscopy. The inter-foetal membrane is used as a reference to find abnormal anastomoses. Membrane identification is a challenging task due to small field of view of the camera, presence of amniotic liquid, foetus movement, illumination changes and noise. This paper aims at providing automatic and fast membrane segmentation in fetoscopic images. We implemented an adversarial network consisting of two Fully-Convolutional Neural Networks. The former (the segmentor) is a segmentation network inspired by U-Net and integrated with residual blocks, whereas the latter acts as critic and is made only of the encoding path of the segmentor. A dataset of 900 images acquired in 6 surgical cases was collected and labelled to validate the proposed approach. The adversarial networks achieved a median Dice similarity coefficient of 91.91% with Inter-Quartile Range (IQR) of 4.63%, overcoming approaches based on U-Net (82.98%-IQR: 14.41%) and U-Net with residual blocks (86.13%-IQR: 13.63%). Results proved that the proposed architecture could be a valuable and robust solution to assist surgeons in providing membrane identification while performing fetoscopic surgery
