    Photoassociative ionization of Na inside a storage ring

    Motivated by recent interest in low dimensional arrays of atoms, we experimentally investigated the way cold collisional processes are affected by the geometry of the considered atomic sample. More specifically, we studied the case of photoassociative ionization (PAI) both in a storage ring where collision is more unidirectional in character and in a trap with clear undefinition of collision axis. First, creating a ring shaped trap (atomotron) we investigated two-color PAI dependence with intensity and polarization of a probing laser. The intensity dependence of the PAI rate was also measured in a magneto-optical trap presenting equivalent temperature and density conditions. Indeed, the results show that in the ring trap, the value of the PAI rate constant is much lower and does not show evidences of saturation, unlike in the case of the 3D-MOT. Cold atomic collisions in storage ring may represent new possibilities for study.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; Accepted by Optics Communicatio

    Guidance and Leakage properties of chiral optical fibers

    The field theory of guided waves in optical fibers with step-index profiles and in which both core and cladding are chiral isotropic media is developed. We show that both surface and semileaky modes can propagate in optically active fibers. To shed light on the guidance and leakage properties of chiral isotropic fibers we present a physical interpretation and several numerical results. The new leakage effect associated with semileaky modes is an important property that cannot be neglected in the analysis of chiral optical fibers but that, nevertheless, has been systematically disregarded in the literature

    Insecticidal activity of culture supernatants from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner strains against Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae.

    Recentemente, proteinas inseticidas vegetativas (Vips), identificadas no sobrenadante da cultura de certas cepas de Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.), foram capazes de controlar alguns insetos-praga economicamente importantes. Como avaliacao do potencial de aplicabilidade destas proteinas contra a lagarta-do-cartucho (Spodoptera frugiperda Smith), o inseto-praga mais importante da cultura do milho, as caracteristicas e o efeito de mortalidade do sobrenadante da cultura de cinco cepas de B.t. foram investigadas. Notaveis diferencas entre as cepas foram detectadas, nao somente em termos de eficiencia na mortalidade dos insetos, mas tambem nas diferencas de mortalidade entre os sobrenadantes aquecido e nao-aquecido tratamentos estes que foram usados para distinguir a fracao proteica inseticida termo-sensivel de outra fracao termo-estavel, de natureza nao-proteica (b-exotoxinas). Os padroes qualitativo , quantitativo e temporal de secrecao da proteina total no meio (sobrenadante) foram avaliados por espectrofotometria e eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida. As cepas apresentaram distintas taxas de crescimento e tempos de secrecao de proteinas em relacao a densidade de celulas na cultura. Alem disso, o padrao de bandas eletroforeticas tambem variou de maneira cepa-especifica, em ambas condicoes desnaturantes e nao-desnaturantes. Polipeptideos que apresentaram peso molecular semelhantes aos esperados para proteinas Vip3A identificadas anteriormente foram encontradas em cepas com alta taxa de mortalidade do sobrenadante. Os dados sugerem a possibilidade e a utilidade de pesquisar fracoes inseticidas de natureza proteica (do tipo Vip) em sobrenadantes de B.t., como forma para desenvolver alternativas especificas e eficientes de controle biologico que possam ser empregadas em programas de manejo integrado de S. frugiperda em milho tropical

    The impact of financial restatements on financial markets: A systematic review of the literature

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the most relevant issues related to the impact of financial restatements in the dynamics of financial markets and identify several research gaps to be investigated in future research. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology is based on a systematic review of the literature described by Tranfield et al. (2003). The final sample includes 47 academic papers published from 1996 to 2019. Findings: Papers in this domain discuss three main topics: how the market prices the announcement of a financial restatement; how financial restatements affect the announcing firm’s cost of capital and how financial restatements affect firms’ reputation. There are several issues to explore in future research, including whether financial restatements affect the dynamics of financial markets in Europe, whether the market fully and promptly assimilates the information content of a restatement, the role of financial analysts’ information disclosures in this process or how regulators may improve the way they provide investors with timely information about firms’ restating problems. Research limitations/implications: There is always some degree of subjectivity in the definition of the keywords, search strings and selection criteria in a systematic review. These are all important aspects, as they delimitate the scope of the study and define the sample of papers to be reviewed. Practical implications: The answers to the research questions identified in this paper may provide regulators with information to improve financial accounting and reporting standards and strengthen investors’ confidence in accounting information and the dynamics of financial markets. Originality/value: This paper systematically reviews the relevant literature exploring the connection between financial restatements and the dynamics of financial markets.     Electron Beam Adjustment in PLATO RTS 2 Including the Effect of Air Gaps

    Background and Purpose: Beam characterization for electron dose calculations in PLATO RTS 2 treatment planning system requires the tuning of two adjustment parameters: sqx (the initial angular spread) and FMCS (a "fudge" multiple Coulomb scattering parameter). This work provides a set of suggestions to optimise electron dose calculations with PLATO, taking into account the effect of air gaps between the electron applicator and the patient skin. Material and Methods: Two adjustment criteria have been followed: one which uses just one input data set corresponding to the standard (null) air gap and another one that takes into account the whole range of clinically used distances between the electron applicator and the patient surface. The adjusted values of sqx were compared with experimental data and GEANT3 Monte Carlo code results. A systematic study has been carried out of the effect of both adjustment parameters on electron dose calculations in water. Comparisons of dose distributions and point dose values have been done between PLATO RTS2, GEANT3 Monte Carlo code and experimental data. Also the dependence on field size has been assessed. The values of sqx for the different electron energies obtained through the different approaches are discussed. Results and conclusions: The first adjustment criteria yield unrealistic dose distributions whenever the air gap is different from the standard one. A sqx balanced with a proper FMCS parameter leads to reasonably good dose distributions and point dose values that agree with experimental results within less than 1%

    Supercritical fluid processing of natural based polymers doped with ionic liquids

    Some approaches have been developed in our group to investigate the role of ionic liquids as process and property modifiers of natural-based polymers. In our previous work, we proposed the use of ionic liquids as plasticizing agents for the creation of porous structures from a semi-crystalline natural-based polymer. The current work intended to complement the previous studies, evaluating the ability of ionic liquid (IL) to plasticize blends of starch with poly (lactic) acid, with different ratios of starch and PLA of 50:50 and 30:70, and its effect on supercritical fluid foaming process (SCF) and providing more insights on the mechanisms involved. For this purpose, SPLA blends were modified and processed using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl). Supercritical fluid foaming was studied at different soaking times (1, 3 and 6 h) using carbon dioxide at 20.0 MPa and 40 oC. The blends were characterized by different techniques, such as infra-red spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and compression and tensile mechanical analysis. The morphology of the foamed structures was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and micro-computed tomography. The results suggest that after 3h of soaking time an equilibrium state of carbon dioxide into the bulk samples is attained, yielding structures with 6% and 15% of porosity, for SPLA70 and SPLA50 respectively. The solubility of carbon dioxide withinthe matrices was studied for the same conditions and the results demonstrate a higher sorption degree in the samples doped with ionic liquid. Sorption and desorption diffusion coefficients of supercritical CO2 in the SPLA matrix were determined for the raw polymer and for the SPLA doped with [bmim]Cl.
