Dynamic security-constrained rescheduling of power systems using trajectory sensitivities
In the deregulated environment of power systems, the transmission networks are often operated close to their maximum capacity to achieve transfer of power. Besides, the operators must operate the system to satisfy its dynamic stability constraints under credible contingencies. This paper provides a method using trajectory sensitivity to reschedule power generation to ensure system stability for a set of credible contingencies while satisfying its economic goal. System modeling issue is not a limiting concern in this method, and hence, the technique can be used as a preventive control scheme for system operators in real time
The Casimir force on a surface with shallow nanoscale corrugations: Geometry and finite conductivity effects
We measure the Casimir force between a gold sphere and a silicon plate with
nanoscale, rectangular corrugations with depth comparable to the separation
between the surfaces. In the proximity force approximation (PFA), both the top
and bottom surfaces of the corrugations contribute to the force, leading to a
distance dependence that is distinct from a flat surface. The measured Casimir
force is found to deviate from the PFA by up to 15%, in good agreement with
calculations based on scattering theory that includes both geometry effects and
the optical properties of the material
Numerous recursive sites contribute to accuracy of splicing of long introns in flies [preprint]
Recursive splicing, a process by which a single intron is removed from pre-mRNA transcripts in multiple distinct segments, has been observed in a small subset of Drosophila melanogaster introns. However, detection of recursive splicing requires observation of splicing intermediates which are inherently unstable, making it difficult to study. Here we developed new computational approaches to identify recursively spliced introns and applied them, in combination with existing methods, to nascent RNA sequencing data from Drosophila S2 cells. These approaches identified hundreds of novel sites of recursive splicing, expanding the catalog of recursively spliced fly introns by 4-fold. Recursive sites occur in most very long (\u3e 40 kb) fly introns, including many genes involved in morphogenesis and development, and tend to occur near the midpoints of introns. Suggesting a possible function for recursive splicing, we observe that fly introns with recursive sites are spliced more accurately than comparably sized non-recursive introns
Active Vibration Control of a Smart Cantilever Beam on General Purpose Operating System
All mechanical systems suffer from undesirable vibrations during their operations. Their occurrence is uncontrollable as it depends on various factors. However, for efficient operation of the system, these vibrations have to be controlled within the specified limits. Light weight, rapid and multi-mode control of the vibrating structure is possible by the use of piezoelectric sensors and actuators and feedback control algorithms. In this paper, direct output feedback based active vibration control has been implemented on a cantilever beam using Lead Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) sensors and actuators. Three PZT patches were used, one as the sensor, one as the exciter providing the forced vibrations and the third acting as the actuator that provides an equal but opposite phase vibration/force signal to that of sensed so as to damp out the vibrations. The designed algorithm is implemented on Lab VIEW 2010 on Windows 7 Platform.Defence Science Journal, 2013, 63(4), pp.413-417, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.63.486
Comment on ``One-Dimensional Disordered Bosonic Hubbard Model: A Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study"
We present the phase diagram of the system obtained by continuous-time
worldline Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate that the actual phase
diagram is in sharp contrast with that found in Phys. Rev. Lett., 76 (1996)

Low-temperature far-infrared ellipsometry of convergent beam
Development of an ellipsometry to the case of a coherent far infrared
irradiation, low temperatures and small samples is described, including a
decision of the direct and inverse problems of the convergent beam ellipsometry
for an arbitrary wavelength, measurement technique and a compensating
orientation of cryostat windows. Experimental results are presented: for a gold
film and UBe13 single crystal at room temperature (lambda=119 um), temperature
dependencies of the complex dielectric function of SrTiO3 (lambda=119, 84 and
28 um) and of YBa2Cu3O7-delta ceramic (lambda=119 um).Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Perbandingan Kinerja Keuangan dengan Menggunakan Pendekatan Roi dan Eva antara PT. Bank Mandiri Tbk dengan PT. Bank Bni Tbk
Improving the Sensitivity of LISA
It has been shown in the past, that the six Doppler data streams obtained
LISA configuration can be combined by appropriately delaying the data streams
for cancelling the laser frequency noise. Raw laser noise is several orders of
magnitude above the other noises and thus it is essential to bring it down to
the level of shot, acceleration noises. A rigorous and systematic formalism
using the techniques of computational commutative algebra was developed which
generates all the data combinations cancelling the laser frequency noise. The
relevant data combinations form a first module of syzygies. In this paper we
use this formalism for optimisation of the LISA sensitivity by analysing the
noise and signal covariance matrices. The signal covariance matrix, averaged
over polarisations and directions, is calculated for binaries whose frequency
changes at most adiabatically. We then present the extremal SNR curves for all
the data combinations in the module. They correspond to the eigenvectors of the
noise and signal covariance matrices. We construct LISA `network' SNR by
combining the outputs of the eigenvectors which improves the LISA sensitivity
substantially. The maximum SNR curve can yield an improvement upto 70 % over
the Michelson, mainly at high frequencies, while the improvement using the
network SNR ranges from 40 % to over 100 %. Finally, we describe a simple toy
model, in which LISA rotates in a plane. In this analysis, we estimate the
improvement in the LISA sensitivity, if one switches from one data combination
to another as it rotates. Here the improvement in sensitivity, if one switches
optimally over three cyclic data combinations of the eigenvector is about 55 %
on an average over the LISA band-width. The corresponding SNR improvement is 60
%, if one maximises over the module.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to Class. Quant. Gravit
