    WARP: Weight Associative Rule Processor. A dedicated VLSI fuzzy logic megacell

    During the last five years Fuzzy Logic has gained enormous popularity in the academic and industrial worlds. The success of this new methodology has led the microelectronics industry to create a new class of machines, called Fuzzy Machines, to overcome the limitations of traditional computing systems when utilized as Fuzzy Systems. This paper gives an overview of the methods by which Fuzzy Logic data structures are represented in the machines (each with its own advantages and inefficiencies). Next, the paper introduces WARP (Weight Associative Rule Processor) which is a dedicated VLSI megacell allowing the realization of a fuzzy controller suitable for a wide range of applications. WARP represents an innovative approach to VLSI Fuzzy controllers by utilizing different types of data structures for characterizing the membership functions during the various stages of the Fuzzy processing. WARP dedicated architecture has been designed in order to achieve high performance by exploiting the computational advantages offered by the different data representations

    Evaluating the expression of urokinase and tissue leukocyte being in benign and malignant breast disease

    Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of the expression of uPA in the malignant tissue and therefore a potential indicator of prognosis. Methods: We examined the expression of uPa in leukocytes and tissues of three groups of women: with breast cancer; with benign breast lesion and healthy women (control group). We used RT Real Time PCR assay. The expression of urokinase is significantly higher in malignant breast lumps compared to benign lesions. However, in women with carcinoma of the breast, malignant tissue expresses higher amounts of uPA than the healthy counterpart. There are no statistically significant differences in the expression of uPA, between tissues taken from women with benign lesions. The lymphocytes taken from healthy volunteers show a level of expression of uPA significantly lower than the other tested samples Lymphocytes extracted from cancer patients express higher amounts of uPA compared to lymphocytes belonging to women with benign breast lesions. The expression of uPA was compared with the clinical and biological parameters commonly used in clinical practice for the definition of the prognosis. The only exception found, concerns those tumors characterized by the simultaneous negativity for estrogen receptors, progesterone and HER2 (state of triple negative), in which the expression of uPA is very high.     Functional characterization of the Pneumocystis jirovecii potential drug targets dhfs and abz2 involved in folate biosynthesis.

    Pneumocystis species are fungal parasites colonizing mammal lungs with strict host specificity. Pneumocystis jirovecii is the human-specific species and can turn into an opportunistic pathogen causing severe pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals. This disease is currently the second most frequent life-threatening invasive fungal infection worldwide. The most efficient drug, cotrimoxazole, presents serious side effects, and resistance to this drug is emerging. The search for new targets for the development of new drugs is thus of utmost importance. The recent release of the P. jirovecii genome sequence opens a new era for this task. It can now be carried out on the actual targets to be inhibited instead of on those of the relatively distant model Pneumocystis carinii, the species infecting rats. We focused on the folic acid biosynthesis pathway because (i) it is widely used for efficient therapeutic intervention, and (ii) it involves several enzymes that are essential for the pathogen and have no human counterparts. In this study, we report the identification of two such potential targets within the genome of P. jirovecii, the dihydrofolate synthase (dhfs) and the aminodeoxychorismate lyase (abz2). The function of these enzymes was demonstrated by the rescue of the null allele of the orthologous gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Non-coding regulatory elements: potential roles in disease and the case of epilepsy

    Non-coding DNA (ncDNA) refers to the portion of the genome that does not code for proteins and accounts for the greatest physical proportion of the human genome. ncDNA includes sequences that are transcribed into RNA molecules, such as ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and un-transcribed sequences that have regulatory functions, including gene promoters and enhancers. Variation in non-coding regions of the genome have an established role in human disease, with growing evidence from many areas, including several cancers, Parkinson's disease and autism. Here, we review the features and functions of the regulatory elements that are present in the non-coding genome and the role that these regions have in human disease. We then review the existing research in epilepsy and emphasise the potential value of further exploring non-coding regulatory elements in epilepsy. In addition, we outline the most widely used techniques for recognising regulatory elements throughout the genome, current methodologies for investigating variation and the main challenges associated with research in the field of non-coding DNA

    Possibilidades da educação para a emancipação no presente:: considerações a partir de Foucault e Adorno

    presente artigo reflete sobre as possibilidades de uma educação para emancipação no presente a partir dos pensamentos de Michel Foucault e Theodor Adorno. Partindo do que esses filósofos compreenderam por educação para emancipação a partir dos conceitos de crítica e de Aufklärung presentes em suas filosofias, e das divergências existentes entre elas, objetivamos caracterizar uma atitude comum que as nutrem e à luz da qual parece ser possível pensar a atualidade de seus pensamentos sobre o assunto. Argumentamos pela tese de que a partir da atitude crítica e da suspeita em relação ao Aufklärung, comum aos seus pensamentos, é possível pensar em uma educação para a emancipação que consiste no reconhecimento e nos cuidados em relação à própria menoridade, na qual se encontra imerso não apenas o educador, como também o educando. Salientamos que, se Adorno pensa nessa possibilidade como uma forma de resistência política ao existente ”“ uma exigência ética para que Auschwitz não se repita ”“, Foucault a compreenderá como um modo de subjetivação capaz de criar modos de existência que implique mais do que em uma resistência, em uma forma de inovar a experiência social. Tendo em vista essas divergências, assim, entendemos que o pensamento de Foucault parece ser mais afirmativo do que o de Adorno para romper o círculo fechado do poder no qual está imersa a educação na “sociedade de controle”; porém, ponderamos que o pensamento do frankfurtiano é mais fecundo do que o do filósofo francês para levar ao limiar o ideal moderno de emancipação em que se assenta a educação atual e compreender a mágoa decorrente de nossa inserção como educadores no existente. Nesse sentido, ambos poderiam ser retomados para repensarmos criticamente o sentido de nossas ações como educadores, no presente, de modo que sejamos capazes não apenas de resistir ao existente, como também criar modos de existência que concorram para inovação da experiência social
