Circadian variation in gastric vagal afferent mechanosensitivity
Food intake is coordinated to cellular metabolism by clock gene expression with a master clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus synchronized by light exposure. Gastric vagal afferents play a role in regulating food intake, but it is unknown whether they exhibit circadian variation in their mechanosensitivity. We aimed to determine whether gastric vagal afferents express clock genes and whether their response to mechanical stimuli oscillates throughout the light/dark cycle. Nodose ganglia were collected from 8-week-old female C57BL/6 mice every 3 h starting at lights off (1800 h) to quantify Bmal1, Per1, Per2, and Nr1d1 mRNA by qRT-PCR. Additionally in vitro single-fiber recordings of gastric vagal mechanoreceptors were taken at all time points. Per1, Per2, Bmal1, and Nr1d1 mRNA is expressed in the nodose ganglia and levels oscillated over a 24 h period. In mice fed ad libitum, gastric content was 3 times higher at 0000 h and 0300 h than 1200 h. The response of tension receptors to 3 g stretch was reduced by up to 70% at 2100 h, 0000 h, and 0300 h compared with 1200 h. Gastric mucosal receptor response to stroking with a 50 mg von Frey hair was 3 times greater at 1200 h and 1500 h than the response at 0000 h. Similar findings were obtained in mice fasted for 6 h or maintained in darkness for 3 d before study. Therefore, these changes do not result from food intake or the light/dark cycle. The XMM-Newton spectral-fit database
The XMM-Newton spectral-fit database is an ongoing ESA funded project aimed
to construct a catalogue of spectral-fitting results for all the sources within
the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue for which spectral data products
have been pipeline-extracted (~ 120,000 X-ray source detections). The
fundamental goal of this project is to provide the astronomical community with
a tool to construct large and representative samples of X-ray sources by

A new solid-state logarithmic radiometer
Combination of temperature-compensated logarithmic amplifiers and p-i-n photodiodes operating in zero-bias mode provides lightweight radiometer for detecting spectral intensities encompassing more than three decades over a range of at least 300 to 800 nanometers at low power levels
XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1 AGN H0557-385
We present XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert 1 AGN H0557-385. We have
conducted a study into the warm absorber present in this source, and using
high-resolution RGS data we find that the absorption can be characterised by
two phases: a phase with log ionisation parameter xi of 0.50 (where xi is in
units of ergs cm/s) and a column of 0.2e21 cm^-2, and a phase with log xi of
1.62 and a column of 1.3e22 cm^-2. An iron K alpha line is detected. Neutral
absorption is also present in the source, and we discuss possible origins for
this. On the assumption that the ionised absorbers originate as an outflow from
the inner edge of the torus, we use a new method for finding the volume filling
factor. Both phases of H0557-385 have small volume filling factors (< 1%). We
also derive the volume filling factors for a sample of 23 AGN using this
assumption and for the absorbers with log xi > 0.7 we find reasonable agreement
with the filling factors obtained through the alternative method of equating
the momentum flow of the absorbers to the momentum loss of the radiation field.
By comparing the filling factors obtained by the two methods, we infer that
some absorbers with log xi < 0.7 occur at significantly larger distances from
the nucleus than the inner edge of the torus.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
A simultaneous XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX observation of the archetypal Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548
We report the spectral analysis of a long XMM-Newton observation of the
well-studied, moderate luminosity Broad Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The
source was at an historically average brightness and we find the hard (3-10
keV) spectrum can be well fitted by a power law of photon index gamma ~ 1.75,
together with reflection. The only feature in the hard X-ray spectrum is a
narrow emission line near 6.4 keV, with an equivalent width of ~ 60 eV. The
energy and strength of this line is consistent with fluorescence from `neutral'
iron distant from the central continuum source. We find no evidence for a broad
Fe K line, with an upper limit well below previous reports, suggesting the
inner accretion disc is now absent or highly ionised. The addition of
simultaneous BeppoSAX data allows the analysis to be extended to 200 keV,
yielding important constraints on the total reflection. Extrapolation of the
hard X-ray power law down to 0.3 keV shows a clear `soft excess' below ~ 0.7
keV. After due allowance for the effects of a complex warm absorber, measured
with the XMM-Newton RGS, we find the soft excess is better described as a
smooth upward curvature in the continuum flux below ~ 2 keV. The soft excess
can be modelled either by Comptonised thermal emission or by enhanced

Fe K emission and absorption features in XMM-Newton spectra of Mkn 766 - evidence for reprocessing in flare ejecta
We report on the analysis of a long XMM-Newton EPIC observation in 2001 May
of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 766. The 3-11 keV spectrum exhibits a
moderately steep power law continuum, with a broad emission line at ~6.7 keV,
probably blended with a narrow line at ~6.4 keV, and a broad absorption trough
above ~8.7 keV. We identify both broad spectral features with reprocessing in
He-like Fe. An earlier XMM-Newton observation of Mkn 766 in 2000 May, when the
source was a factor ~2 fainter, shows a similar broad emission line, but with a
slightly flatter power law and absorption at a lower energy. In neither
observation do we find a requirement for the previously reported broad 'red
wing' to the line and hence of reflection from the innermost accretion disc.
More detailed examination of the longer XMM-Newton observation reveals evidence
for rapid spectral variability in the Fe K band, apparently linked with the
occurrence of X-ray 'flares'. A reduction in the emission line strength and
increased high energy absorption during the X-ray flaring suggests that these
transient effects are due to highly ionised ejecta associated with the flares.
Simple scaling from the flare avalanche model proposed for the luminous QSO PDS
456 (Reeves etal. 2002) confirms the feasibility of coherent flaring being the
cause of the strong peaks seen in the X-ray light curve of \mkn.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRA
GEMINGA'S SOFT X-RAY EMISSION AND THE STRUCTURE OF ITS SURFACE
We present a model to explain the decrease in the amplitude of the pulse
profile with increasing energy observed in Geminga's soft X-ray surface thermal
emission. We assume the presence of plates surrounded by a surface with very
distinct physical properties: these two regions emit spectra of very distinct
shapes which present a crossover, the warm plates emitting a softer spectrum
than the colder surrounding surface. The strongly pulsed emission from the
plates dominates at low energy while the surroundings emission dominates at
high energy, producing naturally a strong decrease in the pulsed fraction. In
our illustrative example the plates are assumed to be magnetized while the rest
of the surface is field free.
This plate structure may be seen as a schematic representation of a
continuous but very nonuniform distribution of the surface magnetic field or as
a quasi realistic structure induced by past tectonic activity on Geminga.Comment: 10 pages, AASTeX latex, + 3 figures (compressed 7 uuencoded).

Agnesi Weighting for the Measure Problem of Cosmology
The measure problem of cosmology is how to assign normalized probabilities to
observations in a universe so large that it may have many observations
occurring at many different spacetime locations. I have previously shown how
the Boltzmann brain problem (that observations arising from thermal or quantum
fluctuations may dominate over ordinary observations if the universe expands
sufficiently and/or lasts long enough) may be ameliorated by volume averaging,
but that still leaves problems if the universe lasts too long. Here a solution
is proposed for that residual problem by a simple weighting factor 1/(1+t^2) to
make the time integral convergent. The resulting Agnesi measure appears to
avoid problems other measures may have with vacua of zero or negative

Dielectric anomalies and spiral magnetic order in CoCr2O4
We have investigated the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and dielectric
properties of polycrystalline CoCrO, an insulating spinel exhibiting
both ferrimagnetic and spiral magnetic structures. Below = 94 K the
sample develops long-range ferrimagnetic order, and we attribute a sharp phase
transition at 25 K with the onset of long-range spiral magnetic
order. Neutron measurements confirm that while the structure remains cubic at
80 K and at 11 K; there is complex magnetic ordering by 11 K. Density
functional theory supports the view of a ferrimagnetic semiconductor with
magnetic interactions consistent with non-collinear ordering. Capacitance
measurements on CoCrO, show a sharp decrease in the dielectric constant
at , but also an anomaly showing thermal hysteresis falling between
approximately = 50 K and = 57 K. We tentatively attribute the
appearance of this higher temperature dielectric anomaly to the development of
\textit{short-range} spiral magnetic order, and discuss these results in the
context of utilizing dielectric spectroscopy to investigate non-collinear
short-range magnetic structures.Comment: & Figure
