    A method for classifying grain stress evolution behaviors using unsupervised learning techniques is presented. The method is applied to analyze grain stress histories measured in-situ using high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) from the aluminum-lithium alloy Al-Li 2099 at the elastic-plastic transition (yield). The unsupervised learning process automatically classified the grain stress histories into four groups: major softening, no work-hardening or softening, moderate work-hardening, and major work-hardening. The orientation and spatial dependence of these four groups are discussed. In addition, the generality of the classification process to other samples is explored

    Elevated pressures are encountered in many metal forming processes that can alter microstructural evolution rates. Here we measure rate changes with pressure in recrystallization and grain growth in Fe through adaptation of synchrotron-compatible multi-anvil presses, originally designed for study of the mantle. Recrystallization and grain growth are monitored in situ using high-energy X-ray diffraction. Principal component analysis applied to the diffraction images is used to quantify evolution rates, with increasing pressure significantly slowing the process

    Spectral analysis and new visible and ultraviolet lines of Ar V

    A capillary discharge tube was used to record the Ar spectrum in the region of 330-4400 angstrom. We analyzed a set of 109 lines of Ar V, with 10 of them being classified for the first time. Part of these newly identified lines (six in total) corresponds to electric dipole transitions in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum. We calculated weighted transition rates (gA) for all experimentally observed lines and the corresponding lifetimes using a relativistic Hartree-Fock method with configuration interaction. The equations were modified to consider core polarization (CP) effects. Wavelengths and transition probabilities for the 5s-5p and 5p-5d transitions of WXIV, identifying the ground state as 4f13 5s2 2F7/2 were calculated.     Extreme events in Italy from documentary sources: Venice as a case study

    Venice risks to be submerged as a consequence of two problems: local land subsidence and sea level rise due to global warming. They both contribute to what is referred as Apparent Sea Level Rise (ASLR). Flooding Tides (locally: Acqua Alta) submerge Venice with an exponentially increasing frequency. The Acqua Alta is generated by a number of factors, the main of them being the Sirocco wind blowing over the Adriatic Sea, that ultimately displaces waters towards Venice. These extreme events have been investigated by using the documentary description of past floods, accurately reported over the last millennium, and tide gauge records for the recent period. A fundamental problem is to know the trend of the ASLR, possibly distinguishing between land subsidence and sea level components. Instrumental data go back to 1872 and a key point is to extend ourkno wledge back in time. Long-term ASLR has been investigated with the help of a biological indicator, i.e. the height of the green belt of the algae that live in the tidal range and whose upper front shows the average high tide level. Fortunately, in the first half of the 18th century, this indicator was accurately drawn by the famous painter Antonio Canaletto (1697-1768) and his pupils, mainly Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780), in their photographic paintings made with an optical camera obscura. It has been possible to compare the tidal level, as it was in the 1700s and today. After careful spot investigation and minor corrections for some changes to the hydrological system occurred in the meantime, the bulk submersion of Venice estimated from the paintings is 61 ± 11 cm with average yearly trend 1.9 mm y−1

    Determining contributions by sub-portfolios or single exposures to portfolio-wide economic capital for credit risk is an important risk measurement task. Often economic capital is measured as Value-at-Risk (VaR) of the portfolio loss distribution. For many of the credit portfolio risk models used in practice, the VaR contributions then have to be estimated from Monte Carlo samples. In the context of a partly continuous loss distribution (i.e. continuous except for a positive point mass on zero), we investigate how to combine kernel estimation methods with importance sampling to achieve more efficient (i.e. less volatile) estimation of VaR contributions.Comment: 22 pages, 12 tables, 1 figure, some amendment

    Revised and extended analysis of five times ionized xenon, Xe Vi

    A capillary discharge tube was used to record the Xe spectrum in the 400-5500 Å region. A set of 243 lines of the Xe VI spectrum was observed, and 146 of them were classified for the first time. For all known lines, we calculated the weighted oscillator strengths (gf) and weighted transition probabilities (gA) using the configuration interaction in a relativistic Hartree-Fock approach. The energy matrix was calculated using energy parameters adjusted to fit the experimental energy levels. Core polarization effects were taken into account in our calculations. Experimental energy values and calculated lifetimes are also presented for a set of 88 levels. From these levels, 32 were classified for the first time and 33 had their values revised. Our analysis of the 5s5p5d and 5s5p6s configurations was extended in order to clarify discrepancies among previous works216
