    A 64-Channel 965-μW Neural Recording SoC with UWB Wireless Transmission in 130-nm CMOS

    This brief presents a 64-channel neural recording system-on-chip (SoC) with a 20-Mb/s wireless telemetry. Each channel of the analog front end consists of a low-noise bandpass amplifier, featuring a noise efficiency factor of 3.11 with an input-referred noise of 5.6 μVrms in a 0.001- to 10-kHz band and a 31.25-kSps 6-fJ/conversion-step 10-bit SAR analog-to-digital converter. The recorded signals are multiplexed in the digital domain and transmitted via an 11.7% efficiency pulse-position modulation ultrawideband transmitter, reaching a transmission range in excess of 7.5 m. The chip has been fabricated in a 130-nm CMOS process, measures 25 mm2, and dissipates 965 μW from a 0.5-V supply. This SoC features the lowest power per channel (15 μW) and the lowest energy per bit (48.2 pJ) among state-of-the-art wireless neural recording systems with a number of channels larger than 32. The proposed circuit is able to transmit the raw neural signal in a large bandwidth (up to 10 kHz) without performing any data compression or losing vital information, such as local field potentials

    Is air pollution affecting the disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus? State of the art and a systematic literature review

    Objective: It has been documented that several major components of air pollution, including trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are associated with the prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the impact of air pollution on the SLE disease activity is still elusive. In this paper, we review the current evidence investigating the link between air pollution, especially when measured as PM2.5, and SLE severity and activity. Methods: A detailed literature search was applied a priori to the Ovid MEDLINE In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citation 1986 to present. Presented abstracts from the European League Against Rheumatism and American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/Association for Rheumatology Health Professionals (ARHP) Annual Meetings (2011-2018) were also screened. Results: Out of a total of 1354 papers retrieved from search and references list for detailed evaluation, data from 652 patients with SLE from three studies were analyzed. Two studies had an observational longitudinal design, counting for 348 patients with a follow-up of 24 months and 79 months. Retrieved studies differed for disease activity assessment and air pollution quantifications. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that variations in air pollution may influence the disease activity in patients with SLE. However, the sample size, methodological biases, and differences across the studies make further research mandatory. Understanding the increased burden of SLE and its complications, not only from a medical, but also from a socio-demographic perspective, including an exposure to pollutants, should have implications for resource allocation and access to subspecialty care

    The rise and fall of the king : the correlation between FO Aquarii's low states and the White Dwarf's Spindown

    The intermediate polar FO Aquarii experienced its first-reported low-accretion states in 2016, 2017, and 2018. We establish that these low states occurred shortly after the system's white dwarf (WD) began spinning down, after having spent a quarter-century spinning up. FO Aquarii is the only intermediate polar whose period derivative has undergone a sign change, and it has now done so twice. By combining our spin-pulse timings with previous data, we determine that the WD's spin period has varied quasi-sinusoidally since the system's discovery, and an extrapolation predicts that the white dwarf was spinning down during newly discovered low states in photographic plates from 1964, 1965, and 1974. Thus, FO Aquarii's low states appear to occur exclusively during epochs of spindown. Additionally, our time-series photometry of the 2016-18 low states reveals that the mode of accretion is extremely sensitive to the accretion rate; when the system is fainter than V~14.0, the accretion onto the WD is largely stream-fed, but when it is brighter, it is almost exclusively disk-fed. The system's grazing eclipse remained detectable throughout all observations, confirming the uninterrupted presence of a disk-like structure, regardless of the accretion state. Our observations are consistent with theoretical predictions that during the low states, the accretion disk dissipates into a ring of diamagnetic blobs. Finally, a new XMM-Newton observation from 2017 indicates that the system's anomalously soft X-ray spectrum and diminished X-ray luminosity in the wake of the 2016 low state appear to be long-lasting changes compared to pre-2016 observations.peer-reviewe
