    Synthesis of perfluorinated polyethers

    Get PDF
A series of highly fluorinated acetylenes was prepared and their cyclization reactions were studied. A series of perfluoropolytriazines with -CF2I pendent groups were prepared. These materials can be cured thermally or photochemically to an elastomeric gum. Perfluoropolytriazines with -CN pendent groups were prepared. These materials can be crosslinked by reaction with terephthalonitrile oxide

    Efficient sorting of Bessel beams

    Get PDF
We demonstrate the efficient sorter of Bessel beams separating both the azimuthal and radial components. This is based upon the recently reported transformation of angular to transverse momentum states. We separately identify over forty azimuthal and radial components, with a radial spacing of 1588 m−1, and outline how the device could be used to identify the two spatial dimensions simultaneously

Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Observations of the Evolution of Massive Star-forming Regions

    Get PDF
We present the results of a mid-infrared survey of 11 outer Galaxy massive star-forming regions and 3 open clusters with data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Using a newly developed photometric scheme to identify young stellar objects and exclude extragalactic contamination, we have studied the distribution of young stars within each region. These data tend to support the hypothesis that latter generations may be triggered by the interaction of winds and radiation from the first burst of massive star formation with the molecular cloud material leftover from that earlier generation of stars. We dub this process the "fireworks hypothesis" since star formation by this mechanism would proceed rapidly and resemble a burst of fireworks. We have also analyzed small cutout WISE images of the structures around the edges of these massive star-forming regions. We observe large (1-3 pc size) pillar and trunk-like structures of diffuse emission nebulosity tracing excited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules and small dust grains at the perimeter of the massive star-forming regions. These structures contain small clusters of emerging Class I and Class II sources, but some are forming only a single to a few new stars

The Stealth Biplane: a Proposal in Response to a Low Reynolds Number Station Keeping Mission

    Get PDF
The Stealth Biplane is conceived and constructed to serve as a remotely piloted vehicle designed to navigate a low-level figure-eight course at a target Reynolds number of 100,000. This flight vehicle will combine the latest in lightweight radio controlled hardware in conjunction with current low Reynolds number aerodynamic research to demonstrate feasible operation in a variety of applications. These potential low Reynolds number applications include high altitude atmospheric sampling, search and rescue, and even law enforcement. Design specs and fabrication technique are discussed

Candidate Coronagraphic Detections of Protoplanetary Disks around Four Young Stars

We present potential detections of H-band scattered light emission around four young star, selected from a total sample of 45 young stars observed with the CIAO coronagraph of the Subaru telescope. Two CTTS, CI Tau and DI Cep, and two WTTS, LkCa 14 and RXJ 0338.3+1020 were detected. In all four cases, the extended emission is within the area of the residual PSF halo, and is revealed only through careful data reduction. We compare the observed extended emission with simulations of the scattered light emission, to evaluate the plausibility and nature of the detected emission.Comment: 9 Figures, 40 page

Surviving opinions in Sznajd models on complex networks

The Sznajd model has been largely applied to simulate many sociophysical phenomena. In this paper we applied the Sznajd model with more than two opinions on three different network topologies and observed the evolution of surviving opinions after many interactions among the nodes. As result, we obtained a scaling law which depends of the network size and the number of possible opinions. We also observed that this scaling law is not the same for all network topologies, being quite similar between scale-free networks and Sznajd networks but different for random networks.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

Energy Resolution Enhancement of Mercuric Iodide Detectors

    Get PDF
A pulse processing technique has been developed which improves the gamma-ray energy resolution of mercuric iodide detectors. The technique employs a fast (100 ns) and a slow (6.4 µs) pulse height analysis to correct for signal variations due to variations in charge trapping. The capabilities of the technique for energy resolution enhancement are discussed as well as the utility of the technique for examining the trapping characteristics of individual detectors. We have achieved an energy resolution of 2.6% FWHM at 662 keV with an acceptance efficiency of 100% from a mercuric iodide detector which gives 8.3% FWHM using standard techniques

Racial Threat and Opposition to the Re-Enfranchisement of Ex-Felons

Abstract: Prior research demonstrates that racial threat is related to the time, place and severity of disenfranchisement laws for ex-felons. This study builds on that work by examining whether perceived racial threat helps to account for public opposition to the abolition of disenfranchisement policies. To do this, we draw on interview data from a survey of 1,575 Florida adults randomly sampled in 2005. Perceived racial composition of neighborhood and the perceived involvement of blacks in several crimes – the racial typification of crime – are our measures of perceived racial threat. Perceived racial composition is unrelated to opposition to re-enfranchisement of ex-felons. But the racial typification of crime significantly predicts that opposition, independent of the effects of general punitiveness, conservatism, and other predictors. Among white respondents that relationship is strongest for those who are liberal/moderate and generally less punitive and is not effected by varying levels of racial threat measured at macro-social levels
