“A Origem do Mundo” de Gustave Courbet: realismo e erotismo

This article aims to analyse thepainting L’origine du monde (“The origin of theworld”) by the master of realism Gustave Cour-bet (1819-1877), setting connections with hissocial and artistic context. Realized in a privile-ged moment in the history of Western art andsociety, when they were being distangled fromtheir traditional forms, “The origin of the world”(1866) expresses the innovative character of itstime through the originality of both its form andtheme: in this painting, realism and sexuality oc-cupy the center of the artistic representation. Theinnovation realised by Courbet’s oeuvre is develo-pped here as an important piece of the formationprocess of what Foucault named “the sexualitygadget”. It is argued here that a pictorial or vi-sual knowledge joined the medical, educationaland juridical knowledge that in the 18th and 19thcenturies have articulated and produced a scien-ce about sexuality, which deeply reorganized theways through which it should be enunciated and, especially, visualized in the modern societies.O presente artigo/ensaio pretende ana-lisar a tela L’origine du monde (“A origem do mun-do”), do pintor realista francês Gustave Courbet(1819-1877), estabelecendo relações com seu con-texto social e artístico.

    Whigs and Liberals

The historiography of the British Liberal party has been dominated by one ques- tion: why did it decline from the governing party in 1914 into insignificance by the 1930s? This is the only example in British politics of one of the two main parties losing its leading role, so it is not surprising that it has generated an enormous literature and has coloured virtually every aspect of how the Liberal party, and the Whig grouping which was one of its main precursors, have been viewed. In general, long-term explanations of the party’s fall, based on changes in British society, have gradually lost their hold and the party’s decline is now usually considered an unforeseeable political event, precipitated by the party’s divisions in the First World War. But more recent trends in the historiog- raphy of the Liberal party also tend to discuss much more than just the question of the party’s fall, and are firmly situated in the turn towards political culture and language in studies of British politics. This essay examines these developments and suggests some future directions for the study of the British Liberal party

On a firewood, I am blaze: poetics of memory in a Krahô ritual chant

    Get PDF
A partir disso, interpreto esse canto como uma reflexão sobre seu próprio processo de transmissão e como local de elaboração de uma poética da memória.39227247This paper presents the transcription and translation of the lyrics of a Kraho ritual chant, Amerindian people who live in the north of the state of Tocantins (Central Brazil) and and speak a Je language. This chant is an exemplary piece of one of the several genies of verbal arts found among the Kraho, which constitute central expressives forms in their vast and complex ritual system. I propose here a cross-exercise in which the ethnographic commentary enriches the translation, and the commentary on translation enriches the ethnography. both movements contributing to a more detailed understanding of the text and its context. On that basis, I interpret this chant as a reflection on its own process of transmission and as a place of elaboration of a poetics of memory

Robert Southey and the Peninsular Campaign

Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a prolific writer and a key figure in British cultural life in the early-nineteenth-century. One aspect of his significance was the central role that he played as an interpreter of Spanish and Portuguese politics, society and literature to a British audience. This essay examines two neglected aspects of Southey's engagement with the Iberian peninsular - his writings in the Edinburgh Annual Register and his unfinished series of inscriptions on the Peninsular war - in order to reach a fuller understanding of Southey's view of developments in Iberia and how these impacted on his politics and his sense of his public role

Herbicides have negligible effects on ants and springtails in an Australian wheat field

The effects of herbicides applied to a direct drilled and traditionally tilled wheat field on trap catches of the abundant Collembola and Formicidae were examined. Significantly higher abundances of Collembola and species richness of ants were found on the direct-drilled plots. A significant effect of the herbicides, bromoxynil (C7H3Br2NO) and hoegrass (diclofop-methyl), on the activity of two of the fourteen species of surface-dwelling Collembola was detected but no effect was observed on surface-active Formicidae. Jeannenotia stachi numbers were significantly more reduced on the direct-drilled compared to the traditionally tilled plot after herbicide treatment possibly because of higher predator abundance on the latter. In the short term, herbicides have a minimal effect on most species of surface-active arthropods although Collembola were more adversely affected than Formicidae.
