Relation Discovery from Web Data for Competency Management
This paper describes a technique for automatically discovering associations between people and expertise from an analysis of very large data sources (including web pages, blogs and emails), using a family of algorithms that perform accurate named-entity recognition, assign different weights to terms according to an analysis of document structure, and access distances between terms in a document. My contribution is to add a social networking approach called BuddyFinder which relies on associations within a large enterprise-wide "buddy list" to help delimit the search space and also to provide a form of 'social triangulation' whereby the system can discover documents from your colleagues that contain pertinent information about you. This work has been influential in the information retrieval community generally, as it is the basis of a landmark system that achieved overall first place in every category in the Enterprise Search Track of TREC2006
Dynamics of Rumor Spreading in Complex Networks
We derive the mean-field equations characterizing the dynamics of a rumor
process that takes place on top of complex heterogeneous networks. These
equations are solved numerically by means of a stochastic approach. First, we
present analytical and Monte Carlo calculations for homogeneous networks and
compare the results with those obtained by the numerical method. Then, we study
the spreading process in detail for random scale-free networks. The time
profiles for several quantities are numerically computed, which allow us to
distinguish among different variants of rumor spreading algorithms. Our
conclusions are directed to possible applications in replicated database
maintenance, peer to peer communication networks and social spreading

S wave velocity structure below central Mexico using high-resolution surface wave tomography
Shear wave velocity of the crust below central Mexico is estimated using surface wave dispersion measurements from regional earthquakes recorded on a dense, 500 km long linear seismic network. Vertical components of regional records from 90 well-located earthquakes were used to compute Rayleigh-wave group-velocity dispersion curves. A tomographic inversion, with high resolution in a zone close to the array, obtained for periods between 5 and 50 s reveals significant differences relative to a reference model, especially at larger periods (>30 s). A 2-D S wave velocity model is obtained from the inversion of local dispersion curves that were reconstructed from the tomographic solutions. The results show large differences, especially in the lower crust, among back-arc, volcanic arc, and fore-arc regions; they also show a well-resolved low-velocity zone just below the active part of the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) suggesting the presence of a mantle wedge. Low densities in the back arc, inferred from the low shear wave velocities, can provide isostatic support for the TMVB
A bright nanowire single photon source based on SiV centers in diamond
The practical implementation of many quantum technologies relies on the
development of robust and bright single photon sources that operate at room
temperature. The negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV-) color center in
diamond is a possible candidate for such a single photon source. However, due
to the high refraction index mismatch to air, color centers in diamond
typically exhibit low photon out-coupling. An additional shortcoming is due to
the random localization of native defects in the diamond sample. Here we
demonstrate deterministic implantation of Si ions with high conversion
efficiency to single SiV- centers, targeted to fabricated nanowires. The
co-localization of single SiV- centers with the nanostructures yields a ten
times higher light coupling efficiency than for single SiV- centers in bulk
diamond. This enhanced photon out-coupling, together with the intrinsic
scalability of the SiV- creation method, enables a new class of devices for
integrated photonics and quantum science.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Proposal for applying combined selection to diallel analysis.
The phylosophy of intrapopulation combined selection is the search for and identification of individuals with superior genotypic behavior, based on their performance compared to the family mean and, at the same time, of their family mean in relation to the population mean, through the weighting of the phenotypic values represented, respectively, by the within and among families heritability coeficient. The objective of this study was to adapt and apply this philosophy ti diallel analysis. The crosses were considered as having fixed effects and selected on the basis of their specific combining ability (SCA), and on the mean performance of the two involved parents, in relation to the general combining ability (GCA). This work was based on Griffing's (Heredity 10; 35-50, 1956) method 2, model 1 which involves p(p+1)/2 treatments. The proposed index result from the weighting of the effects of GCA (gi's) and SCA (sij's) by the respective determination coefficient of additive and dominant genetic determinations, resulting from the partitioning of the total genotypic determination coefficient. Performance Investigations of IEEE 802.11 a54 Mbps WPA2 Laboratory Links
The increasing importance of wireless communications, involving electronic devices, has been widely recognized. Performance is a fundamental issue, resulting in more reliable and efficient communications. Security is also crucially important. Laboratory measurements are presented for several performance aspects of Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11a54 Mbps WPA2 point-to-point and four node point-to-multipoint links. Our study contributes to performance evaluation of this technology under WPA2 encryption, using available equipment (HP V-M200 access points and Linksys WPC600N adapters). New results are given from TCP and UDP experiments concerning TCP throughput versus TCP packet length, jitter and percentage datagram loss versus UDP datagram size. Comparisons are made to corresponding results for Open links. Conclusions are drawn about the comparative performance of the links.

Instability of scale-free networks under node-breaking avalanches
The instability introduced in a large scale-free network by the triggering of
node-breaking avalanches is analyzed using the fiber-bundle model as conceptual
framework. We found, by measuring the size of the giant component, the
avalanche size distribution and other quantities, the existence of an abrupt
transition. This test of strength for complex networks like Internet is more
stringent than others recently considered like the random removal of nodes,
analyzed within the framework of percolation theory. Finally, we discuss the
possible implications of our results and their relevance in forecasting

One- and two-proton transfer reactions with vibrational Nuclei
We extend a semiclassical model of transfer reactions to the case in which
one of the collision partners is a vibrational nucleus. The model is applied to
one- and two-proton stripping reactions in the 37Cl + 98Mo system, for which a
rapid transition from normal to anomalous slope in the two proton transfer
reaction at energies around the Coulomb barrier is experimentally observed.
This behavior is satisfactorily reproduced by the present extension of the
