    Recurrent tetanus

    It is, perhaps, not widely known that tetanus may recur in the same individual. Tetanus may recur in 0.5 - 1.0% of cases, months or years after the initial infection. A review of the literature uncovered 98 cases of recurrent tetanus reported to date. Three cases of recurrent tetanus encountered in Malta between 1954 and 1965 are presented. Recurrent tetanus presents important clinical problems. The purpose of this paper is to report these three cases and to discuss the possible underlying etiological factors and therapeutic problems of recurrent tetanus.     In October 1969, professor V.G. Griffiths inaugurated monthly clinicopathological conferences at St. Luke's Hospital Malta. Two of the case studies presented at the April 1970 meeting are hereby published. A guest participant was professor Linell, of the University Institute for Pathology, associated with the Almanna Sjukhuset of Malmo, Sweden, who was then visiting the medical school. The main focus of the subject of the conference is on tumours of the kidneys and ureters, whereby an interesting discussion about the cases in question is presented, outlining the respective detailed medical examinations and evaluations processes.peer-reviewe

    Magellan/M2FS and MMT/Hectochelle Spectroscopy of Dwarf Galaxies and Faint Star Clusters within the Galactic Halo

    We present spectroscopic data for 16369 stellar targets within and/or toward 38 dwarf spheroidal galaxies and faint star clusters within the Milky Way halo environment. All spectra come from observations with the multi-object, fiber-fed echelle spectrographs M2FS at the Magellan/Clay telescope or Hectochelle at the MMT, reaching a typical limiting magnitude G < 21. Data products include processed spectra from all observations and catalogs listing estimates -- derived from template model fitting -- of line-of-sight velocity (median uncertainty 1.1 km/s) effective temperature (234 K), (base10 logarithm of) surface gravity (0.52 dex in cgs units), [Fe/H] (0.38 dex) and [Mg/Fe] (0.24 dex) abundance ratios. The sample contains multi-epoch measurements for 3720 sources, with up to 15 epochs per source, enabling studies of intrinsic spectroscopic variability. The sample contains 6078 likely red giant stars (based on surface gravity), and 4494 likely members (based on line-of-sight velocity and Gaia-measured proper motion) of the target systems. The number of member stars per individual target system ranges from a few, for the faintest systems, to ~ 850 for the most luminous. For most systems, our new samples extend over wider fields than have previously been observed; of the likely members in our samples, 823 lie beyond twice the projected halflight radius of their host system, and 42 lie beyond 5 Rhalf.Comment: Published September 2023 in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, processed spectra and catalogs publicly available at the Zenodo database doi:10.5281/zenodo.783792

    Spectroscopic Confirmation of the Sixth Globular Cluster in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

    The Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy has an anomalous number of globular clusters, five, for its stellar mass. There is a longstanding debate about a potential sixth globular cluster (Fornax~6) that has recently been `rediscovered' in DECam imaging. We present new Magellan/M2FS spectroscopy of the Fornax~6 cluster and Fornax dSph. Combined with literature data we identify 1517\sim15-17 members of the Fornax~6 cluster that this overdensity is indeed a star cluster and associated with the Fornax dSph. The cluster is significantly more metal-rich (mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=0.71±0.05\overline{\rm [Fe/H]}=-0.71\pm0.05) than the other five Fornax globular clusters (2.5<[Fe/H]<1.4-2.5<[Fe/H]<-1.4) and more metal-rich than the bulk of Fornax. We measure a velocity dispersion of 5.61.6+2.0kms15.6_{-1.6}^{+2.0}\,{\rm km \, s^{-1}} corresponding to anomalously high mass-to-light of 15<<M/L<<258 at 90\% confidence when calculated assuming equilibrium. Two stars inflate this dispersion and may be either Fornax field stars or as yet unresolved binary stars. Alternatively the Fornax~6 cluster may be undergoing tidal disruption. Based on its metal-rich nature, the Fornax 6 cluster is likely younger than the other Fornax clusters, with an estimated age of 2\sim2 Gyr when compared to stellar isochrones. The chemodynamics and star formation history of Fornax shows imprints of major events such as infall into the Milky Way, multiple pericenter passages, star formation bursts, and/or potential mergers or interactions.     The Kinematics, Metallicities, and Orbits of Six Recently Discovered Galactic Star Clusters with Magellan/M2FS Spectroscopy

    We present Magellan/M2FS spectroscopy of four recently discovered Milky Way star clusters (Gran 3, Gran 4, Garro 01, LP 866) and two newly discovered open clusters (Gaia 9, Gaia 10) at low Galactic latitudes. We measure line-of-sight velocities and stellar parameters ([Fe/H], logg\log{g}, TeffT_{\rm eff}, [Mg/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy centered on the Mg triplet and identify 20-80 members per star cluster. We determine the kinematics and chemical properties of each cluster and measure the systemic proper motion and orbital properties by utilizing Gaia astrometry. We find Gran 3 to be an old, metal-poor (mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.84) globular cluster located in the Galactic bulge on a retrograde orbit. Gran 4 is an old, metal-poor ([Fe/H]}=-1.84) globular cluster with a halo-like orbit that happens to be passing through the Galactic plane. The orbital properties of Gran 4 are consistent with the proposed LMS-1/Wukong and/or Helmi streams merger events. Garro 01 is an old, metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.30) globular cluster on a near circular orbit in the outer disk. Gaia 9 and Gaia 10 are among the most distant known open clusters at RGC18,21.2 kpcR_{GC}\sim 18, 21.2~kpc and most metal-poor with [Fe/H]~-0.50,-0.46 for Gaia 9 and Gaia 10, respectively. LP 866 is a nearby, metal-rich open cluster ([Fe/H]=+0.1=+0.1).     The recovery of North Atlantic right whales, Eubalaena glacialis, has been constrained by human-caused mortality

    North Atlantic right whales (NARW), Eubalaena glacialis, were nearly exterminated by historical whaling. Their abundance slowly increased up until 2010, to a maximum of fewer than 500 whales, and since then they have been in decline. We assessed the extent to which the relatively slow increase demonstrated by NARW was intrinsic, and how much could be due to anthropogenic impacts. In order to do so, we first compared calf counts of three populations of Southern right whales (SRW), E. australis, with that of NARW, over the period 1992–2016. By this index, the annual rate of increase of NARW was approximately one-third of that of SRW. Next we constructed a population projection model for female NARW, using the highest annual survival estimates available from recent mark–resight analysis, and assuming a four-year calving interval. The model results indicated an intrinsic rate of increase of 4% per year, approximately twice that observed, and that adult female mortality is the main factor influencing this rate. Necropsy records demonstrate that anthropogenic mortality is the primary cause of known mortality of NARW. Anthropogenic mortality and morbidity has limited the recovery of NARW, and baseline conditions prior to their recent decline were already jeopardizing NARW recovery.The North Atlantic Right Whale Catalog is maintained with support from ongoing contracts from NOAA Fisheries.     CD32-Expressing CD4 T Cells Are Phenotypically Diverse and Can Contain Proviral HIV DNA.

    Efforts to both characterize and eradicate the HIV reservoir have been limited by the rarity of latently infected cells and the absence of a specific denoting biomarker. CD32a (FcγRIIa) has been proposed to be a marker for an enriched CD4 T cell HIV reservoir, but this finding remains controversial. Here, we explore the expression of CD32 on CD3+CD4+ cells in participants from two primary HIV infection studies and identify at least three distinct phenotypes (CD32low, CD32+CD14+, and CD32high). Of note, CD4 negative enrichment kits remove the majority of CD4+CD32+ T cells, potentially skewing subsequent analyses if used. CD32high CD4 T cells had higher levels of HLA-DR and HIV co-receptor expression than other subsets, compatible with their being more susceptible to infection. Surprisingly, they also expressed high levels of CD20, TCRαβ, IgD, and IgM (but not IgG), markers for both T cells and naïve B cells. Compared with other populations, CD32low cells had a more differentiated memory phenotype and high levels of immune checkpoint receptors, programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1), Tim-3, and TIGIT. Within all three CD3+CD4+CD32+ phenotypes, cells could be identified in infected participants, which contained HIV DNA. CD32 expression on CD4 T cells did not correlate with HIV DNA or cell-associated HIV RNA (both surrogate measures of overall reservoir size) or predict time to rebound viremia following treatment interruption, suggesting that it is not a dominant biomarker for HIV persistence. Our data suggest that while CD32+ T cells can be infected with HIV, CD32 is not a specific marker of the reservoir although it might identify a population of HIV enriched cells in certain situations

    IONS FOR LHC: STATUS OF THE INJECTOR CHAIN

    The LHC will, in addition to proton runs, be operated with Pb ions and provide collisions at energies of 5.5 TeV per nucleon pair, i.e. more than 1.1 PeV per event, to experiments. The transformation of CERN's ion injector complex (Linac3-LEIR-PS-SPS) to allow collision of ions in LHC in 2008 is well under way. The status of these modifications and the latest results of commissioning will be presented. The remaining challenges are reviewed
