    Botanical origin, physicochemical properties (ash, colour, diastase activity, electrical conductivity (EC), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), moisture, optical rotation (OP), pH, reducing sugars, total acidity, total soluble solids, and water activity), bioactive compounds (BC), and antioxidant activity obtained from strawberry tree honey from South Portugal were investigated. Results showed that the pollen analysis and physicochemical parameters were found within to meet international honey specifications. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in results of ash content, EC, HMF, OP and colour when were compared with analogous famous Italian honey (Sardinia island). For BC, total phenolic and total flavonoid content were 94.47mg gallic acid/100 g and 5.33 mg quercetin/100 g, respectively. Concerning Portuguese honey, it was also found that radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay) was 43.46% and antioxidant activity was 18.85 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/100 g and 9.92 mg quercetin equivalent/100 g. These results confirmed that Portuguese strawberry tree honey has the highest antioxidant activity, when compared with other kinds of honey. This complete report demonstrates advantages and can help to promote consumption and shown their benefical properties (e.g., antioxidant); which will may increase the commercial value.Erasmus Mundus European Program [2008-1022/002

    Acoustic Properties of Amorphous Solids at Very Low Temperatures: The Quest for Interacting Tunneling States

    Full text link
    We discuss the strain dependence of the acoustic properties of amorphous metals in both normal and superconducting states, in the temperature range 0.1 mK ≤T≤1 \le T \le 1 K. A crossover is found when the strain energy is of the order of the effective interaction energy between tunneling systems at the corresponding temperature. Our results provide clear evidence for the interaction between tunneling systems, whose energy is in quantitative agreement with theoretical expectations, and reveal that without the knowledge of the corresponding strain dependences, the measured temperature dependences below ∼50\sim 50 mK of the acoustic properties of disordered solids are rather meaningless.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Inflation and seigniorage in Argentina

    Argentina, where increases in inflation appear to be closely linked to government attempts to raise seigniorage, was chosen for this study because of its persistent high rates of inflation and its fiscal imbalance. Monetization of fiscal deficits becomes a major force for creating money and inflation in countries with limited access to domestic and foreign credit. The authors found that inflation in Argentina played an important role in generating public sector revenues. The authors found that at the revenue maximizing rate of inflation, the government can get seigniorage of about 7.5 % of GDP in steady state. Between June 1978 and April 1985, there was a clear, positive relation between inflation and the inflation tax for rates of inflation below 18 %. At the 20 % range, the inflation tax ranged from 7 to 10 % of GDP. Increases in inflation above 20 % do not give the government more inflation tax revenues. The direct implication of this situation is that any serious stabilization effort requires finding an alternative source of revenue to replace the inflation tax.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Insurance&Risk Mitigation,Fiscal&Monetary Policy

    Sustainability in the boardroom: An empirical examination of Dow Jones sustainability world index leaders

    In recent years, there has been a virtual explosion of interest in corporate governance. Corporate scandals and the need to protect minority shareholders' interests, for example, are some of the reasons behind the development of corporate governance codes in numerous countries and corporations. At the same time, the concepts of "sustainable development", "corporate responsibility", and "corporate citizenship" have taken root in the business world. Although an extensive body of research treats the fields of corporate governance and sustainable development separately, less attention has been paid to the interaction between both fields. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by examining how corporate governance systems are evolving in order to integrate sustainable development thinking into them. We do so by analyzing the governance systems of the 18 corporations that are leading the market sectors considered by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSWI). We present the results of our in depth analysis of the 18 cases and propose the Sustainable Corporate Governance Model that emerges from that analysis.Corporate governance; sustainable corporate governance; sustainable enterprise; sustainable development; business in society;

    Interfacial depinning transitions in disordered media: revisiting an old puzzle

    Get PDF
    Interfaces advancing through random media represent a number of different problems in physics, biology and other disciplines. Here, we study the pinning/depinning transition of the prototypical non-equilibrium interfacial model, i.e. the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, advancing in a disordered medium. We analyze separately the cases of positive and negative non-linearity coefficients, which are believed to exhibit qualitatively different behavior: the positive case shows a continuous transition that can be related to directed-percolation-depinning while in the negative case there is a discontinuous transition and faceted interfaces appear. Some studies have argued from different perspectives that both cases share the same universal behavior. Here, by using a number of computational and scaling techniques we shed light on this puzzling situation and conclude that the two cases are intrinsically different.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
