THE REHABILITATION OF FULTON BAG & COTTON MILLS: A Case for a Unique Public-History Site and Open-Air Museum

By the 1990s, Atlanta\u27s historic Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills (The Mill) had fallen into extreme disrepair. After operations ceased, the 19th-century factory suffered from years of neglect, forcing the decision to either demolish or rehabilitate its industrial structures. Fortunately, a choice was made to convert the majority of Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills’ buildings into residential lofts, despite the significant financial risk. The research related to this study aims to address whether the successfully renovated Fulton Bag & Cotton Mills could identify as an open-air museum. Answers to this question were obtained from Primary Sources (such as interviews and emails from museologists and the mill management’s documentation housed in academic archives) and Secondary Sources (such as printed books and articles related to the history of The Mill, published biographies, and online resources that included relevant academic theses). Research finds that the rehabilitated mill does, in fact, present itself as a public-history site and even incorporates many aspects of an open-air museum. While the educational presentation of The Mill’s history could be improved, the intangible and tangible history is adequately maintained and is sufficiently available to the general public. These findings, however, do lead to more questions. How could public access be improved? What entities will manage the open-air museum? What does an open-air museum mean for the current residents

Sleutelwoorde: funksie, gebruikersituasie,  leksikografie, lemmakandidate, lemmatisering, naslaanpotensiaal, teikengebruiker, woordeboek. The consultation potential of lemma candidates for a monofunctional concise Dutch-Afrikaans dictionary The planning of a monofunctional, concise Dutch-Afrikaans dictionary in the printed medium places  well-known traditional limitations on the lexicographer, the most important being that of space. Given the context, target user, user situation and function of the dictionary, the lexicographer has to carefully   consider the applicable lemmatisation policy. This article reports on an empirical method that could complement corpus study in order to compile an optimally functional lemma list for the planned type of  dictionary. By means of a simulation of the typical user situation, the consultation potential of various types of lemma candidates are determined quantitatively. This determination results in the identification  of the lemmatisation priority of every category of lemma candidates, which in turn ultimately leads to functional lemmatisation and successful dictionary use. Keywords: consultation potential, dictionary, function, lemma candidate, lemmatisation, lexicography, target user, user situation

Hybrid energy networks and electrification of district heating under different energy system conditions

    Get PDF
As electricity systems world-wide are transitioning into increasing levels of variable renewable electricity sources, such as wind power and photovoltaics, increased electrification of other energy sectors has shown to be important for allowing a resource- and cost-efficient integration of these sources. Research has found electrification of district heating to be one of the more promising energy sectors for electrification in relation to integrating variable renewable electricity sources, as district heating allows for the utilization of varied use of different energy conversion technologies and low-cost energy storage solutions. Historically, district heating has mainly been interconnected to the electricity system via combined heat and power units, though research have found that with increasing levels of variable renewable electricity sources the need for electricity consuming conversion units, such as heat pumps, are becoming more important. In this, the national energy system effects of electrification of the district heating sector are investigated. Two future energy system scenarios for two different countries, being Austria and Denmark are made: one with a high degree of district heating utilization and one with a lower degree of district heating utilization. Both countries are expected to utilize increasing levels of variable renewable electricity sources, though the level and type of variable renewables are different due to differences of e.g. in availability hydro power solutions within the countries and the wind and solar resources available. As such, these two countries provide different perspectives on how electrification can be understood under different conditions
