THE KNOWLEDGE ON LYME BORRELIOSIS AND OTHER TICK-BORNE DISEASES AMONG NURSING STUDENTS FROM POLAND AND SLOVAKIA
Tick-borne diseases are infectious diseases transmitted by the bites of infected ticks. The most common vector-borne disease in Europe is Lyme borreliosis (LB). The number of the reported cases of LB has been steadily increasing. For this reason, it is important to undertake educational activities in the field of tick-borne diseases. The aim of the study was to investigate the level and scope of knowledge on tick-borne diseases among nursing students from Poland and Slovakia. The study sample consisted of 428 nursing students (192 students of the State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska, Poland and 236 students of the University in Presov, Slovakia). The knowledge of the surveyed students on tick-borne diseases is limited. Polish students demonstrated greater knowledge about LB, while students from Slovakia showed greater awareness of the threat posed by tick-borne encephalitis. Particularly worrying is the lack of knowledge on proper way of removal of a tick attached to the skin. Students recognize the need to broaden their knowledge on tick-borne diseases, which should be taken into consideration in realized studies curricula.
Physical Activity as a Health Need
The scientific concept of human needs has an interdisciplinary nature and is associated with the standards of living and development, health and disease status, quality of life, and life satisfaction. Research results indicate that systematic physical activity at any ontogenesis period is of vital importance for optimal development and maintenance of physical efficiency, fitness, and health. Therefore, it has been assumed that physical activity is a health need of each man. The aim of the study is to find relationships between physical activity and health needs. The analysis was intended to reveal the importance, functions, and consequences of the impact of physical activity on the psychophysical condition of man based on examples from available literature. The relationships between physical activity and health needs have been presented from the perspective of public health and promotion targeted at improvement of public health in a way to ensure the best fulfilment of conscious and unconscious needs. According to WHO, health needs are disturbances in the health status or social well-being that require intervention measures such as treatment, rehabilitation, or social assistance as well as prevention measures. Systematic moderate physical activity is one of the most important factors with a beneficial effect on human physiological processes and improves the quality of life. The National Health Programme for 2016–2020 recommends increased physical activity among children, adolescents, and the elderly
Seroprevalence of Selected Zoonotic Agents among Hunters from Eastern Poland
The aim of our study was the collection of seroprevalence data for Toxoplasma gondii, Coxiella burnetii, Trichinella spp., and Francisella tularensis from hunters in Lublin Province. The antibodies against T. gondii and C. burnetii were recorded in 38.5% and 16.2% of the sera, respectively. 4.05% of the sera were seropositive for both T. gondii and C. burnetii. None of the sera tested reacted positively with F. tulariensis or Trichinella spp. Seroprevalence of T. gondii and C. burnetii is common among the hunters from Lublin Province. It seems reasonable to undertake similar research among hunters from other regions of eastern Poland
Borelioza z Lyme w województwie lubelskim w czasie pandemii COVID-19
Background. Lyme borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in Poland. The
onset of tick exposure in early spring 2020 coincided with the start of the COVID-19
pandemic. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence of Lyme borreliosis in the
Lublin Province and in individual counties of the area in the year preceding the start of the
COVID-19 pandemic in Poland and in the first year of its duration (2019-2020). Material and
methods. Epidemiological analysis was performed on the basis of data from the National
Institute of Public Health – National Research Institute and data from the Regional Sanitary-
Epidemiological Station in Lublin. Results. In 2020, the incidence rate of Lyme borreliosis in
the Lublin Province was registered to decrease more than 2 times compared to 2019 (from
87.4/100,000 to 37.4/100,000). Decreases in the number of recorded cases were observed
in all quarters of 2020. The largest, more than 5-fold decrease in the number of recorded
cases was seen in Q4 (523 cases in 2019, 101 cases in 2020). The largest numerical decrease
of the incidence rate was registered in Włodawa County (-158.12/100,000), Biała Podlaska
County (-143.43), Kraśnik County (-122.20) and the city of Biała Podlaska (-83.92). On the
other hand, the largest percentage decrease of the rate was noted in Lublin County (-92%),
Biała Podlaska County (-91%), Ryki County (-90%) and the city of Biała Podlaska (-89%).
Conclusions. Significant decreases in the incidence of Lyme borreliosis observed in 2020
in the Lublin Province are undoubtedly related to the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties in
accessing medical care for patients with ailments other than those resulting from SARS-CoV-2
infection. Local healthcare providers should be alert to the possibility that more patients
than ever before are presenting with a diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis delayed by the COVID-19
pandemic and, therefore, late manifestations of the disease.Wprowadzenie. Borelioza z Lyme jest najbardziej rozpowszechnioną chorobą odkleszczową
w Polsce.
(lata 2019-2020). Materiał i metody. Analizę epidemiologiczną przeprowadzono na
podstawie danych Narodowego Instytutu Zdrowia Publicznego PZH – Państwowego Instytutu
Badawczego oraz danych Wojewódzkiej Stacji Sanitarno-Epidemiologicznej w Lublinie.
Wyniki. W roku 2020 w województwie lubelskim zarejestrowano ponad 2-krotny spadek
wskaźnika zapadalności na boreliozę z Lyme w porównaniu z rokiem 2019 (z 87,4/100.000
do 37,4/100.000). Zmniejszenie liczby rejestrowanych zachorowań obserwowano we wszystkich
kwartałach roku 2020. Największy, ponad 5-krotny spadek liczby rejestrowanych zachorowań
zanotowano w kwartale IV (523 przypadki w 2019 roku, 101 przypadków w roku
2020). Największe liczbowe spadki wskaźnika zapadalności zarejestrowano w powiatach:
włodawskim (-158,12/100.000), bialskim (-143,43), kraśnickim (-122,20) oraz mieście Biała
Podlaska (-83,92). Z kolei największe procentowe spadki tego wskaźnika zanotowano
w powiatach: lubelskim (-92%), bialskim (-91%), ryckim (-90%) oraz mieście Biała Podlaska
(-89%). Wnioski. Obserwowane w 2020 roku w województwie lubelskim znaczne spadki
COVID-19 i trudnościami z dostępem do opieki medycznej pacjentów z innymi dolegliwościami
We współczesnych cywilizacjach problemy zdrowotne osób starszych nabrały
w ostatnim czasie zainteresowania naukowego. Celem badań było poznanie samooceny
stanu zdrowia badanych osób oraz czynników i zachowań warunkujących
ich zdrowie: fizyczne, psychiczne, społeczne, duchowe i seksualne. W badaniach
wzięły udział 54 osoby starsze w wieku od 60 do 76 lat, należące do
Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku działającego przy Państwowej Szkole Wyższej
im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej. W pracy posłużono się metodą sondażu
diagnostycznego z wykorzystaniem autorskiego kwestionariusza ankiety.
a 55% to zaradni życiowo optymiści. Zachowania prospołeczne dotyczą 24% badanych,
którzy bezinteresownie pomagają innym, a 17% to udzielający wsparcia.
Satysfakcjonujące życie seksualne prowadzi 9% ogółu, a 24% od czasu do czasu.
Czynniki i zachowania antyzdrowotne tj.: nieregularne spożywanie posiłków,
czasu do czasu
Determinants of health needs in the elderly realized through physical activity
Celem pracy było poszukiwanie zależności pomiędzy uwarunkowaniami (płcią, miejscem zamieszkania,
wykształceniem, wiekiem, samooceną stanu zdrowia, uczestnictwem w aktywności
fizycznej oraz intensywnością wysiłku fizycznego w ramach wykonywanego zawodu), a potrzebami
zdrowotnymi realizowanymi przez aktywność fizyczną. Materiał i metoda. Badania przeprowadzono
w 2016 roku wśród 221 mieszkańców powiatu bialskiego i okolic w wieku 60-90 lat.
W pracy zastosowano sondaż diagnostyczny z autorskim kwestionariuszem ankiety, w którym
badani oceniali stopnie realizacji jedenastu potrzeb zdrowotnych poprzez podejmowaną obecnie
aktywność fizyczną. Wyniki. Nie wykazano istotnego zróżnicowania stopnia realizacji potrzeb
zdrowotnych względem płci oraz miejsca zamieszkania. Wykazano istotne zróżnicowanie względem
wykształcenia a stopniem realizacji potrzeby aktywnej niepełnosprawności oraz rekreacji
ruchowej; wiekiem a realizacją potrzeby profilaktycznej; samooceną stanu zdrowia a realizacją
potrzeby prorodzinnej, profilaktycznej, ruchu, aktywności turystycznej, rekreacji ruchowej, medycznej
i rehabilitacji; dotychczasowym uczestnictwem w aktywności fizycznej a potrzebą ruchu,
antyinwolucyjną oraz profilaktyczną; intensywnością wysiłku fizycznego w ramach wykonywanego
zawodu a potrzebą prorodzinną, aktywnej niepełnosprawności, rekreacji ruchowej oraz
funkcjonalno-czynnościowej. Wnioski.
Introduction and objective. The aim of the present paper is showing an interdependence
between the determining factors (sex, place of residence, education, age, self-esteem of the
health status, participation in physical activities and intensity of a physical effort connected with
performing professional duties) and health needs of elderly people, realized by through physical
activities. Material and method. The research was conducted in 221 people aged 60-90 years.
A diagnostic survey was used as the research method. It consisted of the author`s questionnaire
in which the respondents were asked to evaluate the degree of realization of eleven health needs
through the currently undertaken physical activities. Results. No significant variation of the
degree of realization of health needs with regards to sex and place of living was found. However,
there were significant variations due to such factors as education and the degree of realization
of one’s active disability needs and motor recreation; age and realization of the preventive need;
the self-estimation of one`s health state and realization of a pro-family, preventive, mobility,
tourist activity, motor and medical recreation, and a rehabilitation need; previous participation in
physical activities and the need of mobility, anti-involution and prevention; intensity of a physical
effort within professional duties and a pro-family, active disability, motor and functional
recreation need. Conclusions. Among the determinants diversifying health needs of the tested
seniors realized through their physical activities, one may include education, age, health state,
previous participation in physical activities, as well as the occupation the intensity of effort it
involves. Within none of the analyzed needs, there was found a significant variation with regard
to the respondents’ sex or place of living
Aktywność fizyczna osób starszych z uwzględnieniem barier i wiedzy o zagrożeniach związanych z hipokinezją
Background. Researchers often discuss the subject of physical activity (PA) of the elderly in theoretical terms, showing, for example, the protective mechanisms of PA for the body, beneficial effects for health and aging, as well as the principles of effective health training. According to the WHO and EU, few elderly people are physically active. This study aimed to investigate the level of PA of the surveyed elderly people at the present time, compared to when they were younger. Potential limitations in PA of the respondents and their knowledge about the dangers of hypokinesia were also investigated.Material and methods. This study assessed 217 people, aged 60-85, living in the northern part of the Lublin Province, Poland. It used an original interview questionnaire.Results. Systematic PA performed by respondents earlier in life involved mainly household and backyard activities, professional work, and participation in physical education lessons. The currently most frequent activities were found to be walking (75.6%) and gardening (66.4%). Women much more often than men participated and reported their willingness to be active in organized PA. Various limitations prevented respondents from being physically active. The greatest number of respondents reported disability, physical weakness, kinesiophobia, and multiple diseases (34.6%) as the main barrier, followed by lack of skills to organize physical exercises (27.7%). Concerning threats of hypokinesia, respondents most often indicated obesity, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, and arterial hypertension.Conclusions. The level of PA of the surveyed elderly people, limitations preventing PA, and low level of knowledge about the delayed consequences of hypokinesia suggests a need for seniors’ health education in physioprophylaxis.Wprowadzenie. Według WHO i UE niewiele osób starszych jest aktywnych fizycznie. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród 217 osób w wieku 60-85 lat zamieszkałych na terenie północnej część województwa lubelskiego, Polska. Wykorzystano w nich autorski kwestionariusz wywiadu. Wyniki. Kobiety znacznie częściej niż mężczyźni uczestniczą i zgłaszają chęć aktywności w zorganizowanych zajęciach ruchowych. Wśród barier uniemożliwiających ankietowanym aktywność fizyczną najwięcej osób zadeklarowało własną niepełnosprawność, słabość fizyczną, kinezjofobię, wielochorobowość (34,6%). W dalszej kolejności deklarowano brak umiejętności do zorganizowania ćwiczeń fizycznych (27,7%). Wśród zagrożeń hipokinezji badani wskazywali naj-częściej: otyłość, choroby narządu ruchu i nadciśnienie tętnicze. Wnioski. Aktywność fizyczna w życiu badanych seniorów, bariery uniemożliwiające podejmowanie aktywności fizycznej i niski poziom wiedzy na temat odroczonych konsekwencji hipokinezji sugerują potrzebę edukacji zdrowotnej seniorów z fizjoprofilaktyki
Dziecko z cukrzycą typu 1 w świadomości studentów pielęgniarstwa
Background. Diabetes, due to its prevalence and the rapid increase in the number of new
incidences, has been recognized as an epidemic of the 21st century. It is estimated that over
3 million people in Poland currently suffer from this disease. According to the Ministry
of Health, the knowledge of the society about diabetes is too little and insufficient. The
aim of the study was to investigate and present general and expert knowledge of nursing
students about type 1 diabetes, taking into account the needs of a child and the specialist
skills required to care for diabetic children.
Material and methods. T he study was conducted among t he students of nursing at Pope
John Paul II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska. A questionnaire designed
by the author was used in this study.
Results. T he r espondents r eported t hat t hey p ossess b asic k nowledge a bout t ype 1
diabetes and at the same time are willing to learn more. They recognize that a child with
type 1 diabetes requires special support, therefore medical personnel, educators and
physical education teachers should have relevant knowledge and skills about care for type
1 diabetic children.
Conclusions. T he m ajority o f t he s tudents s urveyed h ad a basic k nowledge a nd s kills
enabling them to provide assistance to children with type 1 diabetes and are familiar with
their needs. The significance of physical activity in t he life of a child w ith t ype 1 diabetes
was known to a lesser extent. The students surveyed are willing to broaden their knowledge
about type 1 diabetes.Wprowadzenie. Cukrzyca z racji częstości występowania i szybkiego wzrostu liczby
nowych zachorowań została uznana za epidemię XXI wieku. Szacuje się, że aktualnie
w Polsce choruje ponad 3 mln ludzi.
choremu dziecku.
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród studentów kierunku pielęgniarstwo
Państwowej Szkoły Wyższej im. Papieża Jana Pawła II w Białej Podlaskiej. W badaniach
zastosowano autorski kwestionariusz ankiety.
Wyniki. Badani ocenili, iż posiadają podstawową wiedzę na temat cukrzycy typu 1,
a jednocześnie są chętni ją pogłębić. Przyznają, że dziecko z cukrzycą typu 1 wymaga
szczególnego wsparcia, dlatego personel medyczny, pedagodzy oraz nauczyciele wychowania
fizycznego powinni posiadać wiedzę i umiejętności z zakresu cukrzycy typu 1.
Wnioski. Badani studenci w zdecydowanej większości posiadają podstawową wiedzę
i umiejętności umożliwiające pomoc dziecku z cukrzycą typu 1 oraz znają potrzeby chorego
dziecka. Zdrowotne znaczenie aktywności fizycznej w życiu dziecka z cukrzycą typu 1 jest
znane badanym w mniejszym zakresie. Badani studenci zgłaszają chęć poszerzenia swojej
wiedzy na temat cukrzycy typu 1
Różnorodne aspekty rehabilitacji i fizjoterapii
The present monograph consists of three thematic chapters, containing articles
covering selected theoretical and practical problems from the fields of rehabilitation
and physiotherapy, taking into consideration especially disabled persons. Papers entered
in the Chapter I concern physiotherapy, showing its specificity and selected methods,
applied in prevention and therapy. Works gathered in the Chapter II present selected
method of rehabilitation in treatment of disabled persons and their activation. In the
Chapter III introduced are articles covering relaxation, which role in rehabilitation is
important, but often underestimated. The editors of the present volume, exposing the
topic of relaxation, wanted to emphasize the need of its broader applying in rehabilitation
and physiotherapy. All papers introduced herein undoubtedly broaden scientific
achievements in rehabilitation in its integration, biomedical, psychopedagogical, social
and legal aspects, contributing to mobilization of disabled persons. They show also
a multidimensional nature of physiotherapy and its established position with perspectives
of a dynamic development
Health needs satisfied by physical activity in the elderly
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w 2016 roku wśród mieszkańców powiatu bialskiego
i okolic (północna część województwa lubelskiego). Przebadano 221 osób w wieku 60-
90 lat. Wśród badanych przeważały kobiety (65,6%) oraz mieszkańcy wsi (56,9%). W pracy
zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego z wykorzystaniem autorskiego kwestionariusza
ankiety.
Wyniki. Najliczniejsza grupa badanych seniorów wskazała, iż przez podejmowaną aktywność
fizyczną realizuje potrzeby prorodzinne (92,3%), profilaktyczne (91,9%), ruchu (89,1%) oraz
antyinwolucyjne i aktywności turystycznej (po 88,7%). Najmniej liczna grupa badanych realizuje
potrzeby aktywnej niepełnosprawności (69,2%) oraz rehabilitacyjne (77,8%).
Wnioski. Badani seniorzy, przez aktywność fizyczną, realizowali wszystkie analizowane potrzeby
zdrowotne. Najliczniejsza grupa realizowała potrzeby prorodzinne, profilaktyczne, ruchu,
antyinwolucyjne oraz aktywności turystycznej. W największym stopniu zaspokajane były
potrzeby prorodzinne, profilaktyczne oraz ruchu, natomiast w najmniejszym potrzeby aktywnej
niepełnosprawności i rekreacji ruchowej.Introduction. In the 1990s, experts stated that, with regard to the public health strategy, increasing
physical activity in society is as significant as treatment of hypertension, lipid metabolism
disorders or battles against tobacco addiction (Drygas, Jagier, 2003). The purpose of the
paper was to present types of health needs of the elderly, which are met by undertaking physical
activity, with further consideration of the degree of its implementation.
Material and method. The research was conducted in 2016 among the residents of Biała Podlaska
district and the surrounding area (northern part of the Lublin Province). Altogether, 221
persons aged 60-90 were examined. The majority of the respondents were women (65.6%) and
rural residents (56.9%). The paper applies the method of the diagnostic survey with the use of
the author’s own survey questionnaire.
Results. The most numerous group of the surveyed seniors indicated that the undertaken PA
satisfies the following needs: family-related (92.3%), prophylactic (91.9%), movement (89.1%),
as well as anti-involutionary and tourism-related (both 88.7%). The fewest indications were
given to the need of becoming active in case of disability (69.2%) and rehabilitation (77.8%).
Conclusions. Physical activity helped the surveyed seniors to satisfy all of the analysed health
needs. The respondents would mainly point to family-related needs, preventive ones, movement,
anti-involutionary as well as tourist and activity-related ones. The needs that seemed
most fulfilled were family-related, prophylactic and those concerning movement while preventing
active disability and physical recreation were met the least
