Molecular dynamics simulations of energetic Ar cluster bombardment of Ag(111)
Large-scale molecular dynamics computer simulations are used to investigate the dynamics of material ejection during high-energy Ar_{n} cluster bombardment of Ag(111) at normal incidence. The silver sample containing 7 million atoms is bombarded with Ar_{n} projectiles (n=45-30000) with kinetic energy spanning from a few keV up to 1 MeV. Such a wide range of projectile parameters allows probing processes taking place during low-density collision cascade as well as during high-density events characteristic of micrometeorite bombardment in space. The material modifications and total sputtering yield of ejected particles are investigated. While at low-energy impacts, ejection of individual silver atoms is the main emission channel, the ejection of large clusters from the corona of the created crater dominates for the high-energy impacts
A Novel Approach for Durability Evaluation of Metal Protective Coatings in Dynamic Interplay with the Liquid Alloy
The article describes a new test method to quickly evaluate the durability of a protective coating to dynamic contact with liquid metal. The essence of the method is the movement of a drop of liquid metal inside a rotating ring, covered from the inside with the protective coating under test. The parameters determined in the test are analogous to the classic pin-on-disk tribological test. The method was tested for the system: liquid alloy 2017A vs. AlTiN coating on a copper substrate. The test temperature was 750°C, and exposure times ranged from 30 to 90 minutes. Sliding path equivalent for the metal droplet/coating system ranged from 31.6 to 95 m. The study, which included visual evaluation of the surface of the samples, followed by phase and microstructural analysis, showed the high efficiency of the method for assessing the lifetime of protective coatings on contact with liquid metal. The investigated issue was also analyzed from the model side taking into account changes in the diffusion coefficient at the contact of liquid metal with the substrate, occurring with the progressive degradation of the protective coating
Rola pniowego systemu homeostazy w udarze mózgu
Zrozumienie mechanizmów prowadzących do załamania
się homeostazy pnia mózgu powinno spowodować podejmowanie lepszych decyzji diagnostyczno-terapeutycznych w przebiegu
udaru
The influence of cardiac and metabolic systems on the clinical course of ischemic stroke
W konsekwencji tych
zmian, obserwowana w Polsce jeszcze w 1997 roku 50-procentowa śmiertelność poudarowa spadła do 6–20% w latach
2010–2011.Clinical observations on the influence of the cardiac and metabolic systems on the incidence and the clinical course of
ischemic stroke led to huge changes in the way of thinking about it. Finally it was stopped to define stroke as a disease, it
appeared to be a multifactorial syndrome.
The changes in understanding were followed by introducing a new system of care and complex, multisytematic treatment of
stroke patients. As a result of a new point of view, the reduction of mortality rate in stroke patients in Poland from 50% in
1997 to 6–2% in 2010–2011 was reported
Ocena wpływu kardiowersji elektrycznej przetrwałego migotania przedsionków impulsem jednofazowym na stopień uszkodzenia mięśnia sercowego
Wstęp: Kardiowersja elektryczna (CV) jest skuteczną metodą przywracania
rytmu zatokowego u chorych z przetrwałym migotaniem przedsionków (AF). Przywrócenie
rytmu zatokowego za pomocą prądu jednofazowego niejednokrotnie wymaga zastosowania
wysokich natężeń tego prądu. Celem pracy była ocena stopnia uszkodzenia mięśnia
sercowego podczas CV jednofazowym prądem elektrycznym na podstawie zmiany osoczowych
stężeń mioglobiny (My) oraz troponiny I (cTnI) w surowicy krwi pacjentów.
Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 34 pacjentów (10 kobiet, 24 mężczyzn)
w wieku 61,3 ± 12,1 roku z przetrwałym, niezastawkowym AF. Stężenie cTnI i My
badano przed zabiegiem, w 6 i 24 godzinie po zabiegu w surowicy krwi metodą FPIA.
Wyniki: Kardiowersja była skuteczna u 29 pacjentów (85%). Średnia energia
użyta do kardiowersji wynosiła 380 ± 302 J. Średnie stężenia cTnI po 0, 6 i 24
godzinach od zabiegu wyniosły odpowiednio: 0,3 ± 0,2 ng/ml, 0,3 ± 0,2 ng/ml i
1,9 ± 0,9 ng/ml (istotna zmienność w czasie; p < 0,04). Średnie stężenia My po
0, 6 i 24 godzinach wynosiły odpowiednio: 39 ± 14 ng/ml, 248 ± 53 ng/ml (p < 0,02),
104 ± 46 ng/ml (p < 0,03). Zmiany osoczowych stężeń cTnI i My korelują z zastosowaną
do CV energią (r = 0,66, p < 0,01 dla cTnI i r = 0,55; p < 0,01 dla My). Zaobserwowano
dodatnią korelację pomiędzy ilością użytej do CV energii a stężeniami badanych
wskaźników przeliczonych względem masy lewej komory serca (r = 0,74, p < 0,04
dla cTnI i r = 0,6; p < 0,05 dla My).
Wnioski: Zaobserwowano wzrost średnich stężeń cTnI i My po zabiegu CV.
Stwierdzono dodatnią korelację przyrostu osoczowych stężeń cTnI i My z użytą energią.
Dynamika zmian osoczowych stężeń cTnI i My może świadczyć o uszkodzeniu komórek
miokardium po CV prądem jednofazowym. Wielkość obserwowanego uszkodzenia jest
dodatnio skorelowana z dostarczoną energią. (Folia Cardiol. 2003; 10: 625-632

3D PET image reconstruction based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation Method (MLEM) algorithm
Positron emission tomographs (PET) do not measure an image directly. Instead,
they measure at the boundary of the field-of-view (FOV) of PET tomograph a
sinogram that consists of measurements of the sums of all the counts along the
lines connecting two detectors. As there is a multitude of detectors build-in
typical PET tomograph structure, there are many possible detector pairs that
pertain to the measurement. The problem is how to turn this measurement into an
image (this is called imaging). Decisive improvement in PET image quality was
reached with the introduction of iterative reconstruction techniques. This
stage was reached already twenty years ago (with the advent of new powerful
computing processors). However, three dimensional (3D) imaging remains still a
challenge. The purpose of the image reconstruction algorithm is to process this
imperfect count data for a large number (many millions) of lines-of-responce
(LOR) and millions of detected photons to produce an image showing the
distribution of the labeled molecules in space.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Studies of discrete symmetries in decays of positronium atoms
A positronium - a bound state of electron and positron - is an eigenstate of parity and charge conjugation operators which decays into photons. It is a unique laboratory to study discrete symmetries whose precision is limited, in principle, by the effects due to the weak interactions expected at the level of 10−14 and photon-photon interactions expected at the level of 10−9.
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a detector for medical imaging as well as for physics studies involving detection of electronpositron annihilation into photons. The physics case covers the areas of discrete symmetries studies and genuine multipartite entanglement. The J-PET detector has high angular and time resolution and allows for determination of spin of the positronium and the momenta and polarization vectors of annihilation quanta. In this article, we present the potential of the J-PET system for studies of discrete symmetries in decays of positronium atoms
Analysis procedure of the positronium lifetime spectra for the J-PET detector
Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) has shown to be a powerful
tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron Emissions
Tomography (PET) are devices allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in
human bodies. A newly developed device, the J-PET (Jagiellonian PET), will
allow PALS in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new
methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer
program that is compatible with the J-PET software. We compare its performance
with the standard program LT 9.0 by using PALS data from hexane measurements at
different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our
fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.Comment: 4 figures, 8 page
TOF-PET detector concept based on organic scintillators
In this contribution we present a new concept of the large acceptance detector systems based on organic scintillators which may allow for simultaneous diagnostic of large fraction of the human body. Novelty of the concept lies in employing large blocks of polymer scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of annihilation quanta, and in using predominantly the timing of signals instead of their amplitudes
