Piloted simulation of an algorithm for onboard control of time-optimal intercept
A piloted simulation of algorithms for onboard computation of trajectories for time-optimal intercept of a moving target by an F-8 aircraft is described. The algorithms, use singular perturbation techniques, generate commands in the cockpit. By centering the horizontal and vertical needles, the pilot flies an approximation to a time-optimal intercept trajectory. Example simulations are shown and statistical data on the pilot's performance when presented with different display and computation modes are described

Optimization techniques applied to passive measures for in-orbit spacecraft survivability
Spacecraft designers have always been concerned about the effects of meteoroid impacts on mission safety. The engineering solution to this problem has generally been to erect a bumper or shield placed outboard from the spacecraft wall to disrupt/deflect the incoming projectiles. Spacecraft designers have a number of tools at their disposal to aid in the design process. These include hypervelocity impact testing, analytic impact predictors, and hydrodynamic codes. Analytic impact predictors generally provide the best quick-look estimate of design tradeoffs. The most complete way to determine the characteristics of an analytic impact predictor is through optimization of the protective structures design problem formulated with the predictor of interest. Space Station Freedom protective structures design insight is provided through the coupling of design/material requirements, hypervelocity impact phenomenology, meteoroid and space debris environment sensitivities, optimization techniques and operations research strategies, and mission scenarios. Molecules, ices and astronomy
Molecules in interstellar gas and in interstellar ices play a fundamental role in astronomy. However, the formation of the simplest molecule, molecular hydrogen, is still not fully understood. Similarly, although interstellar ice analogues have received much attention in the laboratory, the evolution of ices in the interstellar medium still requires further study. At UCL we have developed two separate experiments to address these issues and explore the following questions: How is H formed on dust-grain surfaces? What is the budget between internal, kinetic and surface energies in the formation process? What are the astronomical consequences of these results? For ices, we ask: How do molecules desorb from pure and from mixed ices in regions warmed by newly formed stars? What can molecules released from ices tell us about the star-formation process? We put our results in the context of other laboratory work and we describe their application to current problems in astronomy
Giant Fluctuations of Coulomb Drag in a Bilayer System
We have observed reproducible fluctuations of the Coulomb drag, both as a
function of magnetic field and electron concentration, which are a
manifestation of quantum interference of electrons in the layers. At low
temperatures the fluctuations exceed the average drag, giving rise to random
changes of the sign of the drag. The fluctuations are found to be much larger
than previously expected, and we propose a model which explains their

Multi-agent collaborative search : an agent-based memetic multi-objective optimization algorithm applied to space trajectory design
This article presents an algorithm for multi-objective optimization that blends together a number of heuristics. A population of agents combines heuristics that aim at exploring the search space both globally and in a neighbourhood of each agent. These heuristics are complemented with a combination of a local and global archive. The novel agent-based algorithm is tested at first on a set of standard problems and then on three specific problems in space trajectory design. Its performance is compared against a number of state-of-the-art multi-objective optimization algorithms that use the Pareto dominance as selection criterion: non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), Pareto archived evolution strategy (PAES), multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), and multiple trajectory search (MTS). The results demonstrate that the agent-based search can identify parts of the Pareto set that the other algorithms were not able to capture. Furthermore, convergence is statistically better although the variance of the results is in some cases higher
